Off-season Targets

What's good money? You dont overpay for dudes like Jonathon Simmons, you try to find your own. He is nothing special (not trying to speak bad on him, he is solid). He is an athletic wing who cant shoot on a team that desperately needed athleticism. You can find guys like him in the D-League. It's just about having a great team around them so they can flourish and not be asked to do too much.

This is an oversimplification. Teams have spent 1st rd picks on players hoping they'd be like Jonathan Simmons. Rodney Carney comes to mind

Why wouldn't he opt out and sign a 1+1 with second year as a player option then sign megamax. Didn't read the article but that seems like the best way to do that dance if he wants to.

The one scenario I see where he opts in, is if Utah finds a big name FA who wants to jump aboard, and they start dumping as much salary as they can to clear up cap space. In other words, Hayward takes a 1 year pay cut in order to help add more talent. Not a very likely scenario, but possible.

Simmons is a player we need. Honestly, I loved it when Hood attacked the rim this postseason even in the 2nd round. However, he doesn't create contact to get to the line. If he could get to the line and make his ft's, we would have fared so much better. Simmons does that and plays really good defense.

Simmons is a better version in Burks with better defense. What's not to like?

I wouldn't compare him to Burks at all.

Stylistically he is much closer to Chris Johnson, but with more body control on ball. There is a lot not to like about him. He can't shot and he isnt an efficient scorer. I'm not sure he excels on many teams other than the Spurs (which the strength of the Spurs, they make dudes like this work).

Keep in mind we are talking about a guy who Pop trusted to play 11 mpg in the Grizzlies series. I wouldn't call him a versatile player at all. He matches up well with Houston because they use so many wings/guards that get up and down so Pop has to play him because the Spurs lack athletic ability.

So what are you willing to offer him?

I do agree we need to add some athleticism on the perimeter, but I dont think you go out and do that by overpaying. You do that like the Spurs did and find the bargain everyone else slept on.

Good players emerge when given the chance. He's gone for 10+ in 4 of 5 vs Houston with good defense. I guarantee he will be a Tony Allen type player the next 5 years.

I would offer probably 7-10. Depends on the market for wings. I love a shooter like Ingles, but we need a defensive, fighter more.

Ingles has played better defense this post-season than Jonathon Simmons....

Can't disagree more. After watching guys like Diaw, Exum and Mack (and Hood and Favors) struggle to shoot the ball, I think that every guy the Jazz target this offseason should be good shooters.
