What's new

Playstation Network Down

GD! we have similar tastes and opinions as far as games, those two (DMC and NG) I thought played very similar. I also thought they would do *may get spelling wrong* of Omnishu since the PS3 came out as that game seemed similar to DMC and NG but then maybe that's why they didn't.

Crazy about PSN though I heard it went down some time on Tue (4/20) and I was on PSN early that day downloading an update for DA2 so I must have caught it just before it happened.
The other thing about DMC3 and Ninja Gaiden vs GoW3 is, of course, the difficulty. GoW3 is part of the new breed of game design that's constructed so most people can beat it with a little dedication and not too much effort. That's not to say that's necessarily a bad thing... Resident Evil 4 actually wasn't overly difficult either with the ability to continue from basically anywhere, but it's one of my favorite games ever.

DMC3 and NG, though... those are just brutal. I keep going back because they'll always be challenging, and I know I can always keep improving. Demon's Souls is actually kind of the ultimate form of that, but I sometimes hesitate to recommend that one, because for some people it seems so hard and unforgiving that it's more like work than fun. But if you buckle down really learn how to play well, it's a consistently amazing experience.

BTW, a great article came out recently about the sequel to Demon's Souls, rather unoriginally titled Dark Souls: https://www.next-gen.biz/features/dark-souls-preview. Unlike Demon's Souls, which was a PS3 exclusive, Dark Souls will also be on X-Box 360. I really can't wait, it looks all kinds of awesome.

Yeah basically what AtheistPreacher said Kicky. I just re-read that and my post sounded slightly condescending. I just meant that I figured since you liked Red Dead Redemption you would enjoy Fallout 3. I can't even tell you how many hours I wasted on that and Fallout: New Vegas. I also enjoyed Assassin's Creed purely for the story line, kinda fun to play, gets a little repetitive after a while, but what game doesn't, but the story line is like a movie.
Actually, yeah, Assassin's Creed 2 is another good game that shares a lot of similarities with Red Dead Redemption. I can't say I recommend the first Assassin's Creed, I got bored of that one a little too fast... but the second one has a bit more variety, and more missions and such to keep you occupied overall. And like Fallout 3, you can get it for $20 new on Amazon.

GoW3 the graphics and storyline is what I loved. It wasn't a game that spent too much time with a detailed story line. Most of the games on PS3 are ported over from the Xbox. So, they are essentially the same game as the one on the 360. But, games that are just PS3 games like GoW3 show what the system is capable of. The PS3 is a clearly superior machine we just need games that are made for the PS3 over ported 360 games.

I agree. The PS3 hardware is better, and games optimized for it generally beat the 360. But from everything I've heard, it's somewhat harder for developers to make full use of the PS3's hardware versus the 360's... which had a lot to do with Sony downgrading the announced specs just before release. That does tend to create problems when games are ported from the 360 to PS3. Kevin VanOrd talked about some issues with the PS3 Fallout 3 port in the video review I posted... but the real poster-child for this problem was Bayonetta, which had a terrible PS3 port. It had to go to a load screen every time you paused the game and went into a menu. Bad bad bad. (Bayonetta, btw, was made by the same team that made Devil May Cry series, so if you liked DMC, chances are you'll like Bayonetta. I sure did.)

But I love my PS3... way more exclusive titles that I actually care about (Mass Effect 1 and Tales of Vesperia are the only 360 exclusives that matter to me, whereas the PS3 has Demon's Souls, InFamous, Metal Gear Solid 4, Valkyria Chronicles, Uncharted 1 and Uncharted 2, and Disgaea 3). And this weird online outage aside, I like the fact that PSN is free. And of course, it's a blu-ray player. Not to mention it doesn't RROD at the drop of a hat. PS3 all the way.

From the official PS Blog:

https://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/04/22/update-on-playstation-network-qriocity-services/

An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.

So they took it down themselves. Interesting. One wonders what a hacker could do that would be serious enough to warrant taking the entire network down for over three days. Because, you know, there's only 75 million people who use it.

Remember XBOX Live going down for about a week two years ago. Anyone remember why that happened?

I've been playing Demon's Souls. That is a great game.

It is, my main issue with it is my own indecisiveness especially in regards to equip and mainly weapons and upgrades and then farming potential needed stones a bit. I really don't like to look for help on a first play through and even then I usually only try to see how much I may have missed.

I hear it was the hacker group Anonymous. Who shut off Mastercard, Gene Simmons, Westboro Baptist, etc

Apparently ticked off at Sony going after a PS3 owner who was trying to hack his own PS3.

It gets a bit repetitive farming souls for level ups also. But that is almost expected with RPG game like this.

And hey, the difficulty is part of the fun anyway. Don't want to level too much.

But do you know about the trick in 4-2 to level up quickly? Kill the reaper dude quickly with some arrows, jump off the cliff intentionally, collect your soul, repeat? Goes pretty fast that way, especially if you have the ring of avarice, or whatever the ring is called that increases your souls earned. Anyway, if you haven't heard of this trick and are interested, let me know and I'll go into a little more detail about it.

I have not heard the trick. Not interested just yet. But I'll PM you when/if I'm ready for it.

On a side note the bosses on this game are incredibly intimidating when you first come up against them. The fun is finding their weaknesses and beating them for sure.

4-3 may be a more effective place to farm souls after you kill the boss of course. those flying manta rays that shoot those huge barbs at you give you a large amount of souls and there's like 15 of them. As long as you have that Stormruler sword you can take them down really fast, jump off the cliff and repeat.

Sony Confirms Personal Info Stolen By Hackers - PSN
Sony is confirming that the following information has been leaked

Your name, both real and PSN name
Your address
Your password and POSSIBLY the answers to your security questions
Other miscellaneous data that you provided to the PSN

Sony is also saying it is POSSIBLE that they got...

Your Credit Card Number and expiration date (but not your security number)
Your billing address

They aren't suggesting a course of action, but they do warn that this is pretty major.

Update

Should I have legitimate concerns about said breach?

It's been years but I don't remember ever providing any credit card information. I seem to recall just creating a username and password to play online but again, it's been years and I could be badly mistaken.

Who knows. I guess you could call your credit card people and have them red flag anything from Sony.

Wow, that blows. I'm not quite sure what I should do now. I know my credit card info is on there, I have bought games like Plants vs Zombies on the PSN.

Aieee...

4-3 may be a more effective place to farm souls after you kill the boss of course. those flying manta rays that shoot those huge barbs at you give you a large amount of souls and there's like 15 of them. As long as you have that Stormruler sword you can take them down really fast, jump off the cliff and repeat.

But the thing about the 4-2 trick is that you can kill half a dozen enemies at once. It's much, much faster than killing enemies individually.

Here's the trick. You know that reaper-looking guy in 4-2? There's actually a couple of them, but there's one through the first tunnel at the beginning of the level. He controls all those glowy-type guys, there's something like six of them. The thing is, if you kill the reaper guy with two or three arrows (from the door where you first saw the cutscene for the reaper, he's down in the area below you), those other six or so enemies die along with him... and you get souls for all of them. That's why it's such a good place, you get something like seven enemies for the price of one. After you kill the guy, run back down the tunnel and jump off the cliff, collect your bloodstain, and do the whole thing again. And conveniently, the merchant in the tunnel sells arrows! (As long as you've freed him in 4-1) Note that you do need to kill the reaper somewhat quickly, or his minions will start to attack you (they advance as soon as they see you, but luckily their movement speed is quite slow).

It does help if you have the lava bow first, since it will stun the enemy with fire, making it easy to hit on consecutive shots. Lava bow can be made from the Armor Spider's soul (boss of 2-1). And again, a ring of avarice will give you more souls per kill, making the whole thing even more efficient... it can be found in 3-2 for free, or bought in 3-1. Remember, lastly, that the more the world tendency is towards black, the harder enemies will become... but they'll also give you more souls.

That's the trick. Doing that, you can pretty much pump your character up as much as you want.
