What's new

Following potential 2017 draftees...

If you want a 4 or 5. I think it's pretty bad for wings/guards

We are decent on the wing... assuming we keep Hayward. I'd say we are in the market for the types of players available.

Wings

Hayward - ufa
Ingles - rfa
Hood - under contract
Exum - under contract
Burks - under contract
Johnson - under contract

If the jazz re-sign Hayward and Ingles they are in great shape.

Now exum thinks he is a PG (frustrating he said this). He should accept that you can play off the ball. Hell Hayward ran the offense at SF

As Johnson gets older he is more pf but is still a mismatch at the 3 for a lot of players in the NBA.

Burks I believe will be moved in the off season for many different reason but probably to save money.

Hood has been sooooooo inconsistent it makes my head hurt.

I can see the jazz drafting a wing.

Diallo is at least 2 year project. Don't count him as a contributor at all for the next couple of years.

This is what I think are the team needs

PG - Is a big what if for the Jazz as the future of Hill is still in the wind. I think there are plenty of option in free agency and potentially through a trade. at 24 and or 30 the picking get slim for the Jazz. Evans and Jackson are about it. When it comes to the draft Jackson makes the most sense as he can play off the ball also. Jazz cant wait for a rookie pg to learn.

SG - With Ingles as a RFA and hood not consistent and burks never healthy this is a position the Jazz have to look long and hard at. The free agents are kind of meh but deep enough that you could find depth with the players that are available. Trades are always a possiblity and Fournier is name i like most but a player to groom for the future should be looked at. I like kennard a lot but he will be off the board and then the pickings get very weak. Ingles has to be a priority in the off season. I wouldnt sleep on Furgeson is he falls either.

SF - with our hayward the Jazz will have a massive hole here. Hood can play the 3 but see hood above. Ingles can also play but again RFA. Johnson is a stop gap because of his age. I think the Jazz will address at least 1 new player here in the off season just to be on the safe side. Kurucs makes a lot of sense as a possible draft and stash to see what happens are bring over and start getting minutes right away. Ojeleye is also on option and would be great to have him mentored by Johnson as the way Johnson plays now is what you would want for Ojeleye.

PF - This position is so stacked in this draft you just know that the Jazz will draft a big. Favors is going into the off season with a lot of question marks. He did say he is going to work on a 3 pointer and that would be fun to see but if his knees and back slow him down he will have a hard time switching on faster players. Lyles was just down right awful this year and it is hard to expect much from him next year. I am a huge bolomboy fan and hope he gets a chance to play next year but man it seemed so lost on the court when he did play.

C - again a lot of future potential in the draft at center. Gobert needs rests and it is important that while rudy is on the bench the Jazz can still funnel players into the middle of the court toward a shot blocker. This is probably one of the biggest reasaon I like Jeanne. He is not rudy and I dont expect him to be but he has the length and movement to be a decent shot blocker. I dont see with on the team next year especially with his domestic abuse claims. Pasecniks is one of my favorite players and I think he will be a starter in the NBA but I love what he brings off the bench.

so with all that said I think you will see a couple big guys drafted in the draft for the Jazz.

I'd rather the Jazz develop Frank Jackson as a versatile combo-guard.

that's the smart choice. He is a hometown kid who if he developed into a legit pro that many teams would want but one that would resign with Utah. Jazz have the most unique franchise in basketball. Its location plays a big factor into players so the Jazz face obstacles when it comes to free agents and this is why when you have a chance to draft a guy from your own backyard is available, you pounce on it.

As the Draft gets closer and the interview with Dennis Lindsey yesterday saying he thinks Jazz get better internally as oppose to anything radical.

My new #24 ,SG)Terrance Ferguson.......a replacement for Alec Burks if he doesn't recover his superior athleticism back
#30 ,C) Jonathon Jeanne ........ another French Center to back up Rudy Gobert, when Stifle Tower #1 comes off the then Stifle Tower #2 comes in

I doubt Jeanne falls to 30. If we want him we're probably going to have to take him at 24.

The fact that guys like Diallo, Wilson, Frank Jackson, Lydon, Rabb, etc. etc. are potentially available at #30, means teams are going to be calling the Jazz seeking to acquire that pick. I do also think the Jazz can package 24 + 30 and get up to 18, if that's something they want to do. Pick 30 is strong enough to make that happen.

I agree with Mr. Chocolate. Jeanne is the kind of prospect that would typically go in the 18 - 22 range. He's that upside big project with some unknowns. The potential is too much to pass on at that stage.

Frank Jackson coming for workout:
Frank Jackson coming

Frank Jackson is scheduled to work out for the Jazz on Saturday, May 27, KSL.com has learned.

The Lone Peak High School graduate spent one year at Duke coming off the bench, but hired an NBA agent on May 12 to indicate that he's staying in the draft. Like Kuzma and Mika, he's a second-round prospect, though recent buzz has him moving closer to the first round.

That's thanks to impressive workouts at the Combine, where he impressed with both his athletic testing (first in the shuttle drills, third overall in the standing vertical leap, and fifth in the three-quarter court sprint) and in the game he played in (13 points, 6-10 shooting).

More of a philosophical question since I haven't looked at individual players in much detail so far:

I've heard many, and seen many here, talking about how deep the draft is and how 24 & 30 are going to have real value in the draft. Yet I heard Chad Ford last week talk about how he thinks the draft is not particularly deep (or at least just average) after about #15. Any reason why the discrepancy? Is everyone just overvaluing the prospects, as often is the case (ie insisting that 4-5 PFs slotted between 20-40 are clearly going to be better than Lyles), or is Ford just wrong?

The fact that there isn't much consensus after #15 or 16 so in the draft shows that the talent level is pretty even. That parity may even extend from around 18 - 40 or so. In particular, there are a ton of big players who are similar in terms of ability, but may be better at one aspect of the game or another. So if teams want a quality big player especially, this year's draft is unique and really deep.

I mean, here's a list of bigs who could go anywhere from 18 to around 40 in this draft. It's just a ton ---

TJ Leaf
Justin Patton
Harry Giles
John Collins
Jonathan Jeanne
Ike Anigbogu
Bam Adebayo
Isaiah Hartenstein
Anzejs Pasecniks
Ivan Rabb
Jordan Bell
Tyler Lydon
DJ Wilson
Kyle Kuzma
Jonah Bolden
Caleb Swanigan
Mathias Lessort
Thomas Bryant
Jonathan Motley
Tony Bradley
Semi Ojeleye

That's 21.

I'm still intrigued by Caleb Swanigan... especially if we got him in the second round. Clearly a worker, rebounds, shoots, good passer, he is likely Kanteresque in the PnR, but if Kanter could shoot 40% from 3 and was a good passer would you want him.

I hope the Jazz work him out. My only concern with him is his conditioning and running the floor, but he tested pretty well at the Combine.

Another look at Jonathan Jeanne. Put Rudy and this guy on the floor together, and the Jazz start to look like an exhibit from Jurassic Park.
