2011 draft.....

My question to you guys. The Jazz get the #1 pick. You don't want Williams because he is too small and you are too smart to take a player that will start at PF at six seven. I don't think there ever be another Barkley, and as a GM you don't want to find him. Do you take Kyrie Irving? The reason I ask this, is because when you draft a #1 pick, you are drafting a max player in a couple of years. Do you really want to go back to having the best player on your team be a pg? Do you want to invest over 100 million dollars in a pg? Or do you do everything you can to trade this pick.

While I read some arguments for pg's a few pages back, I still don't know if you draft one with the number one pick, unless you are sure he is Isaiah Thomas or Derrick Rose. Is Irving either of these? If he is as good as Deron, Stockton, Paul, Kidd, Nash, etc I don't know if I take him with the number one pick. Even Rose hasn't won a title yet, and you could argue that Chicago's defense is just as valuable as Rose is.

Thoughts? Am I up in the night, or is this the absolute worst draft to win the lottery in?

If the problem is a PG will be worth the MAX in 4 years, you don't have a problem.

Irving is by far the best prospect in this draft. You take him, without a doubt. You can trade Harris at the deadline, or let him play part of his minutes at the 2 (which he should be able to do against opposing teams' second unit).

If the Jazz were to trade DWill and get Favors, Irving, Harris, and GSpick '12 in return.... that just might go down as one of the best trades in the past 2 decades (although nothing will touch the Gasol fleecing).

Remember Memphis did get Marc Gasol and the extra cap space allowed them to get Z. Randolph. So the trade is not nearly as bad when you look at it from the Memphis POV.

I usually dig your insights, but this line is pretty weak. The trade made the Lakers the instant powerhouse, while the Grizzlies just barely won their first playoff game in franchise history. I'll take Pau over Marc and Randolph 8 days a week. And, BTW, nothing would have NECESSARILY precluded them getting one of these players while keeping Pau... if I remember correctly.

Mostly it was just the ******** rhetoric surrounding letting Pau go. You don't clear cap space for a mega-star by letting a mega-star in his prime walk for nothing.

Plus, we now actually have some bigs that our going after shoots, to go along with a PG. With the number 1 pick, I'd take Irving and just see what happens in 3 or 4 years. And if the Jazz our legit contenders, you keep the team together even if its for the Max.

I can see both side of the arguement about the Gasol trade. I now like it for the Lakers (I haven't the last 2 years) because they signed Bryant for 30 Million a year, for the next 3 years. Which, during that time, the Lakers don't have the pieces or the picks to truelly upgrade there roster. While, Memphis will be contending for a Championship, for the next 5 years, once they lock up Gasol and Battera

just wait until LA pulls another heist and the Grizz fall into the abyss of bad management. Even if they don't, their status as contenders is a LONG way off (even if they beat the Spurs).

My nit to pick with the trade has always been the NBA allowing the Lakers to include Aaron McKie in the deal, even though he was an assistant coach with Philadelphia. A week later, the Jazz tried to trade Greg Ostertag and a #1 to Seattle for Kurt Thomas but the league rejected the deal because Ostertag had filed his retirement papers. Too bad he wasn't just an assistant coach for another team, instead.

I am not so sure about that. Remember no Rudy Gay.

Reread the post. First I was talking from Memphis POV and secondly did not say it was a great trade, but if you look at it objectively it is not nearly as bad in hindsight. I dont know i think ZBo + MGasol is greater than M Gasol by himself. ZBo finally has grown up. Had an excellent year. Numbers wise nearly as good as Pau.

Why would LA need to pull off some trade?

Won't they just be able to sign Dwight Howard?

I have a hard time believing that Howard wants to stay in Orlando after being destroyed by the freakin Hawks this year. SVG is gone, for sure. But Dwight will soon pull a Shaq...

At a time where big name FA are joining forces, nothing would counter Miami's big 3 than Dwight moving to LA. Kobe, Gasol, and Howard.

Dang, I just wish David Stern liked Utah! And wouldn't that be the greatest thing since the Lg Optimus 2, if Memphis beat the Spurs? And the Lakers don't have any assets, who wants Kobe in 3 years? Ron Artest? Andrew Bynum? Odom? Gasol is the only exception & in 3 years, um NO Thanks. Just excited thats all. Plus, who on the Lakers is younger then 28 with good Knees :) There only build for now. And their best players, have no trade clauses. Brighter future=Utah Jazz!!!

They won't have money for Howard, nor the assets to trade for him! This is what I hope happens;

Howard gets traded to NJ for Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries(once resigned), Morrows, and 2 picks. Dwill then signs a 5 year max deal, thinking it's going to be him and Howard for the next 5 years. NJ misses the playoffs. Howard opts not to sign a new contract and Dwill is stuck in NJ with no hope in sight :)

That's what I am wondering. Do you want a max pg? Who are max pg's now? Deron, Paul, anyone else? Do you want to tie that much money up in a position that isn't that valuable? It would be like paying a RB in football. Is Deron worth 16 million a year, when you can have Harris at 12 million and keep Korver? It takes depth and talent to win a title, and does tying up max money in a pg keep you from that? That is just what I am wondering. Is a pg worth max money? Would you win more with a solid pg, solid sf, and really good sg? I dunno. I don't envy KOC this year.

Try it this way: If the problem is a PG will be WORTH the max if 4 years, you don't have a problem.

I definitely like the idea of drafting Terrence Jones at #6, so I decided to take a look at the comparison of Lamar Odom coming out of college.

Lamar Odom
Rhode Island
SF/PF

Odom is projected as a small forward, but can also play both guard spots. Left Rhode Island after his sophomore year, in which he averaged 17.6 points, 9.4 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game. There has been some question of his work ethics, at 6-9 and 230 lbs, if you look at all the guys in the draft, he's a guy that can help his teammates get open shots and looks. Odom can get into the post and score over players. If he's double-teamed, he can find the open man on the perimeter, also Odom can help you bring the ball up the floor.

Terrence Jones
Kentucky
SF/PF

Jones makes prudent decisions passing out of double teams, possessing a multi-faceted set of skills. Sometimes he is forced into the post out of necessity for UK, regardless Jones has done an admirable job playing out of his comfort zone. Displays good patience down low, with surprisingly good footwork and ability to finish over either shoulder. Despite being 6-9 and weighing 244 lbs, Jones has instant fast break potential with his ability to handle and push the rock in transition. Averaging 15.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.9 blocks, and 1.5 assists per game as a freshman.
