World Cup Thread

Not one game is sold out. Great fans!

/thread.
There really is no need to add anything, but I just want to make sure I understand. An event featuring 32 nations (many small) from around the world, playing 79 games, with total seating capacity of 2.9 million is likely going to sell 98% of the available tickets AND have roughly 700 million people watch the final, and this somehow qualifies as a joke?

Seriously, bro, are you retarded?

Also, you frequently make grammatical errors.

Back to grade school, **** tard.

How you gonna call me retarded when you don't even know how many games the World Cup has?

This is classic. Guys resort to name calling, then tell me to go back to grade school. BTW, GVC's post always, and I mean always consist of him saying things like; wrong, retarded, stupid, idiot. Issues?

I made an error, true.

This is false. In general, I use those words when responding to ****ing morons. Like you, for example.

What was the point of you posting in this thread? Again, do you really think 98% attendance, given the participants and number of games (even ignoring the venue), and 700+ million viewers for the final constitute a joke?

If so, what sporting event of similar format (many teams playing many games from many locations) is not a joke?

Well, why did the World Cup committee choose South Africa as a host country then? Isn't that laughable with all of these problems?

As much as I hate to admit it, he has a point here. South Africa was only chose because of PC garbage that Africa has never hosted a World Cup. Now it's pretty obvious why they haven't, even though I don't think selling out every game is the sole measure of how successful the event will be.

A whole bunch of people are going to make a whole bunch of money, and hundreds of millions of people will be watching. Sounds like a joke to me.

No arguments here. That being said, I see and agree with the point that South Africa isn't the most optimal place to have the World Cup and got it solely because people felt like the continent needed to host the event. And it is the best choice from all the countries in Africa. Still, to me that's not saying a lot. I'm actually curious to see how well the security will hold up for the event. SA is a crime ridden place, but their govt. has had 8 or whatever years to plan for it.

The cumulative audience of all matches of the 2006 World Cup is estimated to be 26.29 billion. The 2006 World Cup draw, which decided the distribution of teams into groups, watched by 300 million viewers.
A Cup draw got over double the viewers than the most watched super bowl ever.

Actually, in fairness to South Africa I believe not all the games in South Korea/Japan sold out, and I thought that was a pretty damn good WC. Sometimes it's hard for the local populace to get interested in a Uruguay/Denmark game, and both those countries are damn far away from the venue.

They technically sold out (games were sold in packages, but if you looked in the stands many games were not fully attended). Same thing will probably happen in SA. They released the unsold/returned tickets today to the general public and sold over 60,000 of the remaining 160,000. It's pretty likely that the games will sell out.

Security is a concern for sure, and travelers are being given specific instructions of where to be, what to have with them and what to not have with them, etc. Brazil will probably be worse, in my opinion.

To put this in perspective, if every regular season NBA game were watched by 20 million people, they'd still fall short of the 2006 World Cup's cumulative viewership (20 million X 1230 games = 24.6 billion). Further, Game 6 of the NBA finals had a viewership of only 15.7 million people.
