Why does everyone seem to think that Congress isn't using the ACA? Jason Chaffetz mentioned getting his insurance through the exchanges (obviously prior to his quitting).

Prior to the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (also known as ACA, or Obamacare), members of Congress received the same healthcare insurance benefits as any other federal employee through the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, or FEHBP.

During the mark-up of the ACA bill, however, lawmakers inserted a provision (Section 1312(d)(3)(D)) that requires members of Congress and designated congressional staff members to obtain their health insurance through ACA exchanges rather than continue to receive their healthcare coverage through the FEHBP.

As of 1 January 2014, Members of Congress (MOC) and Congressional staff purchase their insurance through the District of Columbia’s small business health options program (SHOP) exchange, also known as DC Health Link. Contrary to popular belief, Congressional members do not receive free health care. As it does for other federal employees who purchase their insurance through the FEHBP, the federal government provides a subsidy equivalent to 72 percent of the weighted average of all FEHBP premiums.

Therefore, MOC and staff pay approximately 28 percent of their annual healthcare premiums through pre-tax payroll deductions.

If the Affordable Care Act is repealed, members of Congress have a fallback plan. They would be able to return to the FEHBP. Twenty million other Americans won’t.

Because that's what the Koch bros pay them to say and that's what right wing media hope to brainwash the masses into believing.

The right wing narrative is:

1. Obamacare is bad. It was created behind closed doors because of its evilness. No one benefits by it.
2. You shouldn't be forced to buy insurance.
3. Some people don't need healthcare.
4. The free market will magically cure everything.

Fixed that for you. 4 and 5 are often swapped, and added to the bottom of all arguments. But that's the gist.

Hold on. Now you explain to me how in the hell these kids goin into $50,000 a year in college debt are gonna afford mandated healthcare? What kinda ******** law is that? Most them don't need no damn healthcare anyway. Just keep em on there parents an if they ain't got none let em use the clinic.

The ACA allows for that. Parents can cover kids till they are 26.

***NOTE*** - This posts exposes another poster's ignorance on a subject.

If your state embraced the ACA instead of being a bitch about it, it provided the opportunity for states to expand Medicaid to cover nearly all low-income Americans under age 65.

It is a provision of the ACA that Congress has to get their insurance through the exchanges. They use a DC area one. Prior to that, they had the same coverage as other federal employees, paying the same premiums. And they still have to pay 28% of their premiums on the ACA. Apparently some Republicans refused to get their insurance through the ACA so they have to buy their own. I read the part of the ACA that states this, so it isn't a Koch brothers conspiracy at all.

And this is precisely why ACA is failing. Conservative states, like Utah, refused to take Federal subsidy to expand Medicaid, which would eliminate many soaring costs, especially emergency room visits, experienced by many.

Republicans did everything they could to cripple ACA over the last 7 years, and now its failing because they refused to aid those that need it most. Shameful.

Everyone needs health insurance cause some stuff we can cure but it costs lots of money most cannot afford. That's where INSURANCE comes in. Can't believe I have to splain this concept.

All I did is ask one Libby why in the hell libbies force the needy to pay for something they can't afford an another Libby what the hell is wrong with LOCAL government takin control of LOCAL issues. Omg really? I live on food SNAP when I need to an give most my stamps to needy neighbors mostly single mothers. I got me Obamacare on the exchange an that's pretty much only think on my tax return. I can tell you it is a lot better then goin to the dam clinic an my cost is basically zero cause I only claim enough cash to offset the fine.

You party line hacks an your one side only mentality...
