What's new

GMOs

1) GMO crops do not lead to soil erosion. Poor farming practices do. Idiot.

2) Lets look at roundup ready corn. It's corn that can be sprayed with roundup, and kill everything but the corn. It also has an insecticide built into the corn plant. That means the only thing getting sprayed on, is roundup. No other pesticides. This results in less pesticides being used on the crop. It's also more cost effective.

3) I'm a farmer. I have a degree in crop science. I've been around agriculture my entire life. I get that you watched a documentary once, but I know more about this than you do. This is my life. Please try to be reasonable and learn some things.

4) Over the 30+ years that genetically engineered crops have been used, not one death has been caused by them.

5) Before a crop can be introduced into sales, they go through tens of millions of research and testing. I'm sure that you don't trust it, but it's legit.

Ok, Tip, I concede that you know more about crop science than me. And Siro, I didn't just see one video to form this opinion, but if you want to check the one I referenced: http://www.symphonyofthesoil.com/

No, no deaths have been attributed to GMOs and as Tip pointed out they have been around longer than I realized. However when nuclear power was introduced no one realized the danger of low-level radiation. Madame Curie died because of overexposure. This is not to say GMOs are dangerous to your health but there have been studies suggestive of that and I linked everyone to a 331-page PDF of which I've only read a small portion that includes information about the some of the studies. See for yourself if you're interested. I'm just being cautious.

I do know that the half-life of glyphosate is 6 months and there is evidence that it is a carcinogen, which is why in Europe labeling is mandatory, and this was on the recommendation of European scientists, who were not influenced by Monsanto and the U.S. Agri-Chemical industry.

I do subscribe to the organic hypothesis because I believe all living things are connected and that the death of a species can affect us all, that toxins introduced into the environment are harmful to every living thing, that we are all part of the universal rhythm that sustains and propagates life throughout the cosmos and studies of ecology have shown more specifically how this works on earth.

Ok, laugh if you want. But how many of those laughing believe in God -- I don't. This is what I believe, but in a sense it is God without the personification.

The worst thing about the a-bomb is how poorly it jives with the rhythm of the universe. Sad. :(

I think it jives perfectly. The universe is always blowing **** up.

Creator of dioxin lol that **** comes out of the transformers. Ain't no creator dip **** it is a chemical compound.

I don't know where it comes from but it's a component of PCBs, which were created by Monsanto, and we all know about PCBs and their hazards. By the way, I haven't heard one comment regarding Monsanto by anyone. To me, as soon as I hear their association with something, I get suspicious.

Anyway, I think this has been a good discussion, and I would really be interested if Tip would watch Symphony of the Soil -- that link is to the trailer -- and tell us what he thinks of it.

Actually, I have a copy of it -- forgot I had it. I can make it available on DropBox or some other file transfer site if anyone is interested.

Polychlorobiphenols was created my Monsanto? Gawd think I have heard it all from you libbies. I am a fisherman ffs I know bout pbc's. They ain't created by your big bad Monsanto an dropped from planes in chemtrails smarty pants. PBCs is created by tons if industries jest axe people why they don't eat Utah Lake fish. Ain't no Mosato round these parts so grab a burger line to troll.

There is actually a lot of money on both sides of this argument. For example Whole Foods and the Organic Food manufacturers have spent a lot of money on research to show the harmful effects of GMOS. Most of the research has been considered incomplete or not significant.

The scientific consensus on this issue is that GMOs are not harmful. This issue actually reminds me a lot of Global Warming, where there is a scientific consensus that people continue to not believe. What's funny is that most people who accept global warming, can't accept the science on GMOs.

The organic farmers are not in the same league as Monsanto -- now owned by Bayer -- so far as money spent. But I repeat, at least to me, the main issue is not the GMOs, but the process through which they are cultivated, the heavy use of pesticides that harms the ecology and gets into the food supply.

Dude, more pesticides are used on non-GMO.

Ok, maybe not created but by far the main producer -- why don't you guys check your facts before you make your claims:

Former products[edit]
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)[edit]
Until it ended production in 1977, Monsanto was the source of 99% of the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) used by U.S. industry.[34] They were sold under brand names such as Aroclor and Santotherm; the name Santotherm is still used for non-chlorinated products.[126][127]:396 PCBs are a persistent organic pollutant, and cause cancer in both animal and humans, among other health effects.[128] PCBs were initially welcomed due to the electrical industry's need for durable, safer (than flammable mineral oil) cooling and insulating fluid for industrial transformers and capacitors. PCBs were also commonly used as stabilizing additives in the manufacture of flexible PVC coatings for electrical wiring and in electronic components to enhance PVC heat and fire resistance.[129] As transformer leaks occurred and toxicity problems arose near factories, their durability and toxicity became recognized as serious problems. PCB production was banned by the U.S. Congress in 1979 and by the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in 2001.[34][130][131]

1) What method of cultivation are you referring to?

2) They use less pesticides. I detailed that earlier.

They use less pesticides -- really? So you do farm GE crops? But less or more has nothing to do with it, and correct me if I'm wrong, because this is what Symphony of the Soil alleges, it's the glyphosate, it kills everything but the GE plant. Right or wrong?

Yes, they use less pesticides.

No, I do not farm GE crops.

Yes, Roundup (glyphosate is just the active ingredient, you don't sound smarter by not calling it roundup) kills everything but the crop.

Ah glad I could use a big boy word so you actually had ta dig inta what pcb even means. Good doggy. Next lesson go learn yer self the differnce tween production for consumption an byproduct production.
Is it me or has this subject caused you to go into real person mode?

You're so bleepin ignorant ... since when do we eat PCBs. They're not the name of a cereal.

You didn't answer the most important question. Does the Roundup Ready kill everything but the GE product? That's what matters, and if it does, that proves my point.

Exhibit 'A' why trolling is a problem on this message board (excluding the good trolls).

I did answer it, look above, and trust me, it doesn't prove your point.

I'm willing to educate you though, so continue on with this, please.
