Trump vs Pro Athletes

Some would argue that Trump picks these fights because the actual job of governing just does not interest him:

https://www.theatlantic.com/politic...-and-the-politicization-of-everything/540915/

"It has been said that the age of Trump is the politicization of everything. The claim is impossible to dispute, especially one week after an Emmy’s ceremony that felt like an extended presidential roast. But it’s important to note that Trump is choosing to politicize sports and entertainment, not only because he is inclined toward controversy, but also because he is so demonstrably uninterested in actual policy and the political process.

Nobody is forcing the president to morph into a sports radio commentator. It is merely the role that best suits the skills that come most naturally to the former game-show host. Consider the simple, uncontroversial fact that in his ninth month in office, the U.S. president has a clearer position on Stephen Curry’s White House clearance than on any single detail of health care or tax reform. Trump is so bored by the quotidian demands of his surprisingly “complicated” job, which requires guiding policy through a complex political process, that he uses his position to instead harass Americans on the internet. Judging by the attention his sports commentary received this weekend, one can assume that Trump’s shock-jock-in-chief routine will be a long-running show".

Others point out that, because the majority of Americans do not support kneeling for the National Anthem, Trump has set a trap that both the pros and the public that opposes Trump have once again fallen for:

And, just as an aside, since one of the resident trolls continues to conflate Nazism with the Left:

I didn't support it either until this past week. But we now have a president who is purposely pitting one group of Americans against another - for no other discernible reason than to gain cheap applause at political rallies to boost his ego.

While I'm sure this opinion will still maintain a plurality I'd like to see them run another poll in about a month. Hell even Michael Jordan came out for it - though I'm sure he ran it through all his endorsements deals thoroughly beforehand.

lol trump did not start this.

espn made everything political, players did.trump is just hitting back!

Thats a wierd statement. So you do support black lives matter since what you think is what their message is?

America has changed, does anybody else remember what happened to Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf when he sat out the national anthem?

He sat because his interpretation of his religious beliefs brought him to the conclusion that standing for the national anthem was offensive to Allah.

This is a completely different set of circumstances. Today Abdul-Rauf would get black-balled and then have that followed up with some visits from the DHS.

I wonder if Trump just reignited the whole thing to take credit for the declined NFL ratings. Before this week it was mostly activist on Kap's side calling to boycott NFL, to try and hurt their rating as a their form of protest to support Kap.

Now it's a ton of people on the right calling to protest the NFL by not watching because of players kneeling, standing, or not being apart of the anthem at all.

Wouldn't surprise me if he tries to take credit after the next game with low ratings.

I've been following this fairly closely on social media and it is pretty surprising. People are completely ignorant of the facts. Like accusations that players have no connection to servicemen and women, calling them traitors and this is treason or that if they want's to make a change they'd take action off the field. They must not realize that many players donate time and money to various causes like boys and girls clubs.

Crazy how fast people will abandon their principles.

I welcome you to join me on the side of not being surprised about this kind of thing.

It's pretty disappointing. The reason I use surprising is that I have seen some people I consider to be pretty thoughtful and reasoned in their political takes respond very emotionally on this issue.

I've been shocked by this whole Trump thing. We live in a different country than I thought we did. It feels like so much progress has been wiped out or maybe was never real in the first place.

After Charlottesville I was entering a gas station as a black father was leaving with his kids. He saw me approaching and then quickly gathered them under his wings hurrying them to the safety of their car. My first thought was "huh, so that's what that feels like." Then I wondered if this was the new baseline. Is it just assumed that someone like me may want to hurt black children? Was it my pickup? My beard? Am I really all of the sudden a scary guy? Are these lunatics really winning? In 2017 is it really becoming worse to be black in America? People support this? This is the country people want to live in? WTF?

I wonder how many people are having their perspectives changed in a good way due to the current ethnicity climate. On all sides.

Basically, ad hominem attacks to redirect the conversation elsewhere.

my bet is that the net result for mass culture is a regressive one (i.e. the birth of new set of sloppy reductionisms and a whole generation brought up in precarity). And in many cases where regression doesn't seem to carry the day, there will be deeply felt weariness and wariness of the political process (which is it's own kind of regression).

huh?

There's not much good to see, imv. From what I can tell most of suburban America likes it this way.

An absolute embarrassment and stain on our nation's history, and that's me reeling it in.

Would you consider that moment a learning experience for you? Some new insight? I'd consider it one for myself.

So I wonder how many others are getting moments like this. How they are reacting to it and if it is good or bad for them as a person and their growth.

If it wasn't clear enough that Trump is an objectively objectionable person, Dutch has now chimed in to remove doubt.

Seriously, what does Dutch have to do to get banned here, BTW?

National socialism isn't a repudiation of socialism, it's of the people that think socialism is great as long as only white people get to benefit from it, but find socialism evil in any other circumstance. Trump's most fervent supporters, in other words.

But anyway, snopes is biased (towards facts).
