Jazz Scrimmage 2pm MT Time Today

Neto is barely going to play. Neto isnt on the team next unless we fail to re-sign Exum. He will go somewhere he can get minutes, which I think he has a chance to.

Tony Bradley moves well for a guy with that kind of size and length. It looks like he'll be able to keep up with defensive rotations. Ekpe Udoh looked really mobile as well.

I loved the pick but I have completely soured on him.

I was really disappointed that I did not see his game progress in the off season before Summer League. I don't know if there was a lack of effort/focus or if he is just limited and he is, who he is.

So after watching the full scrimmage I have to wonder about some of Andy Larsen's observations. To me Tony Bradley looks very clumsy. He was not impressive at all in this game to me. He looks slow, and I wonder if he'll ever be athletic enough to be anything other than an end of bench big. I certainly don't see him getting close to competing for minutes with Gobert,Udoh,Favors,Jerebko this year. If they think he has some hidden athleticism in there that can come out with a few years of physical development then I'm open to him being a decent pick. I think there were higher ceiling project guys available there, though.

My other observations were that Gobert/Rubio is going to work well. I think the lineup with Ingles and Hood should provide enough spacing as long as Ricky can finish and make enough mid range shots to make the d play honestly. I really liked what I saw from Burks, Mitchell, and Exum. Those 3 bring a ton of energy and athleticism to the game. I really hope to see them in together and getting out on the break. I also thought Neto looked solid. I feel that he deserves more time, but he's just in a tough situation right now. I always liked him as the backup PG of the future, but I'm not sure the timing is going to work.

Favors looked pretty good, but I don't think he looked incredibly athletic. Seemed to be moving better than last year, at least. Udoh impressed me and I think he's going to spell Rudy very nicely. I think a lineup of Jerebko, Udoh, Thabo, Mitchell Exum as your backups is looking like a good possibility. But Burks was solid out there as well, so maybe he finds a way to get minutes.

I was encouraged by Mitchell and Exum both successfully hitting floater or short pullups in the first half. Getting these two guys with supreme athleticism to contribute and be functional in half court this season would be a big boost. I think they both look primed to do well.

Bradley looked slow to you? He had a super impressive recovery block on a fastbreak. He looked great to me.

Fail to re-sign Exum? Unless he has a breakout season, I think the Jazz will and should trade him. Why? Neto continues to improve. Mitchell definitely will become a combo player like CJ McCollum with better defense. Then we also now have Nate Wolters who is no scrub. We're loaded at PG. Rubio has this year and next, and if things work out he could be the starting PG for years to come, which would make Exum expendable, unless he can beat out Rubio by the end of the year, which is highly unlikely.

I thought he had a couple nice moments but overall he looks like a big lumbering guy from a bygone era of the league. He fell over a bunch too, which makes me wonder if maybe he just needs some more physical training to unlock some more athleticism. I just didn't think he was one of the more impressive players at this scrimmage. Certainly not anywhere near impressive enough to get mentioned by a beat writer. But that's just my opinion. I'll look forward to watching him some more in the preseason to see if he changes my mind.

Even though he disappeared by the end, Burks looked much better than I would have expected.

I know it's super early, but I'm going to make a prediction:

To begin the season there will be two distinct ways we'll see Rubio used in the offense: (a) where he dribbles up the side and quick-passes it to a big high up in the middle of the floor, then precedes to run through the baseline before (potentially) getting the ball back, and (b) bring it up and using his dribble in a quick PnR to force action. My prediction is that (b) works a lot better. I think it'll get frustrating when we kill a handful of seconds and Rubio gets the ball back, pounds it for a couple more seconds, and then with 10 or 11 seconds left tries to create a shot.

Watching the scrimmage...

** Guess everyone knows this, but Rubio is one of the best ball distributors, probably ever.

** Mitchell's floater looks decent. He must have really worked on it. He's got a nice little hesitation step he uses to buy space to get it off. He even got one over Gobert.

** Favors is going to get tired of Gobert making every play while he watches from a distance. The two were getting a bit physical when they were matched up against each other. When they were on the same team, they were getting in each other's way.

** Sefalosha can pass a bit.

** Neto can't guard Mitchell. Long term, I really think Mitchell starts playing some minutes at the 1.

** Some of our guys can play with tempo. Some of them just can't. Ingles is more in the latter category. Hood doesn't look comfortable either when he gets sped up.

** It's true that shooting the ball isn't Rubio's thing. He's made 1 of his first 6 shots.

** Jerebko looks like he's basically a spot-up shooter, but he's good at leak-outs.

** Exum has gotten a step on Rubio a couple times and has made a decent play both times.

** #23 is probably ahead of Bolomboy in the rotation.

** Neto can't guard Exum either.

** Bradley's block on Eric Griffin at the start of the 4th quarter was impressive.

** Exum can get a step and make a play almost anytime he wants. Usually it ends up being a good play. He's starting to score the ball a bit more. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Neither Neto nor Wolters are anything close to Exum.

A line-up with Mitchell, Exum and Burks together handling the ball interchangeably could be interesting. They can all play fast. Combine with Rudy at the 5 and maybe Jerebko or even Sefalosha at the 4.

The thought of Neto as our backup PG straight up infuriates me. People need to get that idea out of their heads, he cant guard ANYONE in this league, sure he tries hard but come on, we only just got rid of Mack ffs.

Id rather see Burks, DM, Ingles play backup PG if Exum falters for any reason.

To say Exum is expendable because Neto is there is ****ing stupid!

He's Rudy's BFF, though. Jazz tried everything to appease Hayward (traded for Mack, tried to extend Hill, agreed to terms with Jingles). Not saying a couple of those moves would not have been made, but all three were allegedly good friends with Gordon. I don't think it will be lost on the Jazz that Rudy and Raul are close friends. I think Neto gets offered a contract - won't be a big one, but he'll get offered a little bump to continue to be the 3rd-string PG. It will then be his decision to stay or go.

Not true he can't guard anyone. In fact, he is a good defender. I don't know what his stats are but he plays good position D. What is your problem with Neto. He didn't get many minutes last year but I think when he did, he was better than expected.

Also, Neto didn't look as good as the reports of his performance.

I guess you and Elan are Dante homers. He needs to make a big improvement in my opinion to solidify his position with the Jazz, which means beating out Rubio. If he is solid though, he will be very attractive to other teams so either way, if he improves as most of us expect, it will be a good omen for the Jazz, either as a Jazz man or in a trade, as we are stacked with PGs.

What? Exum doesn't need to beat out Rubio to stay on the team.
