(CNN)A woman walking her dogs near her western New York home was fatally shot Wednesday by a man who told police he mistook her for a deer.

Rosemary Billquist, 43, was hit by a bullet from a single-shot pistol fired by neighbor Thomas B. Jadlowski, said Sgt. Josh Ostrander of the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office.
Jadlowski told investigators he was 200 yards from the victim when he fired.
When Jadlowski realized his grave mistake, he called 911.

I personally believe in a nation with gun rights to the extent we have we need also to have a higher level of expectation, and a higher degree of penalties for mistakes that are, ultimately, preventable through training and discipline.

You DO NOT fire at a target that you cannot absolutely identify. This is an easy one when you're talking about a deer. But the same is absolutely true in a self-defense situation. You must be willing to die by not using your firearm before you would fire upon an unknown target that might be innocent.

I am in favor of gun rights, but honestly, I'm not really in favor of them in our current state of irresponsibility and lack of discipline. We are like children. Children with guns.

It is disgusting.

A pistol from 200 yards? Yeah, right. Something doesn't add up there. Either he was WAY closer than 200 yards and shot her with a pistol, or he was 200 yards away and shot her with a rifle.

Yeah, I saw that. I've tried shooting a pistol at 25 yards, open sights, but yeah... Good luck hitting a deer at 200 yards with a pistol.

Weird story and I bet we haven't heard the whole story yet. Shooting a deer at 200 yards with a pistol after dusk...

yeha let's punish responsible gun owners for what 1 retard did!

yeah, better send thoughts and prayers for innocent people who get shot walking the dog, going to school, movie, club, Walmart or to music concert... That sure seems to be working great.

Shooting someone with a pistol from 200 yards is impossible.

Sincerely,

Jason Bourne and Annie Oakley

I've never shot one of the really large caliber pistols (I'm thinking like .500 S&W) with a long barrel and a scope. I have no idea how far out you could go with something like that.

Two things I've never heard of before:

1) Hunting deer with a pistol. Legit have never heard of that before. Maybe it's an East coast thing? Sounds suspicious to me.

2) Shooting somebody with a pistol from 200 yards away. Unless this dude is a master marksman, no way in hell. Not a chance. Either it was a lot closer, or it was a rifle.

Anyways, if you're stupid enough to mistake a human for a deer, which...I mean, I have no idea how you could possibly do that, then you deserve all the jail time. That's just idiocy. So I doubt this was an accident. Seems pretty purposeful to me.

Yeah, if you go to a pistol range that goes out to 25 yards you'll see just about nobody ever shooting at 25 yards. I've done it and I've hit a 8.5"x11" home printed target a couple times doing it. It isn't easy. I can't imagine trying to use a handgun at 200 yards. While a good rifle with a scope can get you there, that's still a respectable range.

I think we're gonna hear more eventually.

But if there's anyone here who wants to argue that using a pistol at 200 yards after dusk is a reasonable thing to do... please share.

why? i had nothing to do with the woman's death.
Yes you kind of did. You and other gun masochists constantly whining and fighting against stricter gun controls. Now all of these innocent peoples lives because " you need a gun" is partially on your conscience as well.

That’s retarded. Should I say a death caused by a drunk driver is on the conscience of Bulletproof because he’s a home brewer?
Don’t be a retard.

That is a terrible example. But whatever makes you feel better about your right to have guns.

You understand the single biggest stumbling block to greater gun control is a Constitutional Amendment, right?

Whatever you need to tell yourself. I’m on record as saying something needs to be done.

That’s the beauty of it. Based on this wonderful thing called The Constitution, it is a RIGHT.

ok,

then you have as much to do with what hitler, mao stalin lenning did. killing trillions of people on the backs of gun control and leftist theory!

guess you are a person that is more evil them me!

Are you telling me that no constitution or amendment in history of humanity was ever changed? So if your constitution from hundreds of years ago would give you the right to own slaves you would do nothing and say he it is my RIGHT? Come on, it is not impossible to change. Humans evolve and get better and change laws, rules and constitutions for better. Is this stupid law to have right to own guns which was set some long time ago even relevant in today's reality? Absolutely no. Just do the right thing and leave it in history books. Arrange the referendum, let all people of USA decide. If majority is really that stupid and votes yes, than I would rest my case forever. But I can't believe most of USA people are this short sighted.
