What's new

Benji Burke

I'll agree with you on the "diversity" if by diversity you mean blacks (and I think that's the correct term now vs, African Americans). There are other minority groups well represented in SLC such as latinos and Pacific Islanders. Nightlife, I hear, is "lacking." I've heard of several different clubs, just not a bunch with naked women. But is the absence of strip clubs really a bad thing? Maybe you can't make it rain in the 801, but I'm sure you could still get a lap dance somewhere. Or use the internet to hook up (free or paid).

As for the rest, I agree liquor laws are strange. But Chick-fil-a is closed on Sundays in the NW, just as it is in SLC. I'll bet mall stores and restaurant chains are open on Sunday. Perhaps more mom-and-pop stores closed.

As for politics, generally LDS/Republicans are closely allied. But the SLC mayorship has been Democratic since 1976. Since I don't live in SL, I can't speak to the nature of all those Democrats, but several never struck me as overly conservative or closely aligned with the LDS faith. Sure, they might have dialogues with LDS groups, but I would think that would be just natural any place a large number of constituents belong to one particular religious or cultural group. SLC will never be LA or NYC. But it probably isn't a whole lot different from mid-major cities in the U.S.

No, there aren't. Maybe compared to the rest of Utah, but compared to other NBA cities, no.

Is that a fact or something you just made up? Pretty sure religion is a question that can never be brought up in a hiring conversation, nor would it ever be tracked like ethnicity.

While you can't ask in a job interview, the people at the top of the Jazz organization were known to one another before they got a position at the top of that organization. But even if that wasn't the case, there are not particularly subtle cues that tips off one's LDS faith. From fashion, to almost an LDS dialect (public speaking is a big part of LDS church life and they all seem to kind of learn the same mannerisms and speaking styles), to garments (often you can tell that some is, or more importantly is not, wearing them), to outright giveaways like an adult wearing a CTR ring.

Benji and Rhonda Burke: making it impossible to like their son on a personal basis.

Seriously. Tweeting out a picture of his penis the day before training camp aside, Trey did and said everything almost exactly right every step of the way. But his moms. LAWD. His pops, ****, mang. Of course in the era of Lavar Ball they look tame, but they were Lavar-esque.

I
And as far as Benji's comments about Utah being a horrible place to end your career, i'm going to assume he is talking about branding yourself in Utah is ****ing hard. Just look at Hayward. The moment he left he became this huge story, his twitter following doubled over a couple of months. So he is saying what a lot of Jazz fans fear, Benji views Utah as a good place to start off because you will have a low profile and be given space to grow without pressure, but you will eventually outgrow Utah if you have any desire of becoming a bigger name.
bet jerebko saw his Twitter following double when he signed with the jazz.

Maybe look up some statistics. Salt lake has a lot of diversity, just not a lot of black people.
I think the only whiter city in the NBA is Portland. It's the least diverse city in the NBA when you factor in religious diversity.

Least diverse in terms of religion alone? Perhaps. Whitest? Maybe. I don’t know. Least racially diverse? No. Detroit is less so. If we’re taking the immediate cities.

No, Detroit is not less diverse. You are probably just looking at the city statics, which is overwhelmingly black, but you have to look at metro and city.

I qualified my statements appropriately.

Ethnic diversity is only part of the explanation. I mean, an artist like Eminem wont be repping SLC anytime soon.

Also, what the hell was the context of these quotes?
Benji was asked why Trey was looking less like black Jesus and more like black Brian David Mitchell. His response was to bag on Brazilian Moses.

Utah is really ****ing weird but I highly ****ing doubt the Jazz org ever said anything to him or any player about their tattoos. Certainly not in this era. Nobody ****ing cares. He couldn't play on the nba level he was too slow and too small and didn't have any above-average skill to keep him on the floor that's why he doesn't play on any team.

One of the most interesting things I found about Utah are the people who hate the Mormon Church and the "culture" of Utah, but love all of the benefits that culture brings. Utah emphasizes education, youth, community compassion, experiences less crime, is more affiliated with the outdoors, and generally gets its infrastructure right. It is also a great place to do business because of all of the above plus the ability to find someone to speak about any language you need from the general populace. Non-Mormons from all over move to Utah for these benefits. Most recognize that the prevailing culture is the reason that these advantages exist, and yet have no need to become Mormon or badmouth Mormons.

Obviously, this is in the aggregate. You may have a Mormon neighbor who is the worst person on Earth. It is understandable if that shapes your overall view. I do get the feeling that many of the people who complain the loudest would complain no matter what culture or overall situation they are placed in because happiness is rarely ever an external factor.

I mean in Tucson, I see articles and hear talk about how Tucson needs to do more things like Salt Lake City. Many of those things aren't ever going to be available here because of culture. Another percentage want to be Portland. That ain't happening either because Portland has their own culture that can't be transplanted into Tucson. And if you tried to take the culture of Tucson and wire in bits from those other cities, we would stop being what is great in THIS city.

Oh yeah, The Utah Jazz gave Trey Burke more of an opportunity than he would have received anywhere else in the NBA. I doubt any other team believes in their players, historically, than the Jazz do. That is in the DNA from the ownership on down. Some players appreciate that, others can go to Hell. . .

I'll have to remember this whenever I remember what the church has done to facilitate codified racism and homophobia. I'll have to remember that even though correlation does not prove causation, that Utah routinely scrapes along the bottom of nationwide rankings in spending per pupil, that Utah has some of the worst pollution in the 1st world and the state is powerless to do anything but then spends taxpayer money to crusade against pornography as a "health crisis", that the church has either directly committed or has facilitated the torture of gays in an attempt to cure their homosexuality, rationalize/celebrate the eradication of Native Americans because of their (once) lamanite status, refer to and codify their position that 'negroes are of lesser spiritual worth, and then have the audacity to say that they have direct communication with god while also saying that they get things wrong when it's convenient for them because the PR got too hot.

I'll have to remember that when my girlfriend is scared to meet my family because of the deeply racist legacy of the church and the sociopolitical leanings of its members that leave the underprivileged with relatively little to fall back on besides - you guessed it - The Church.

This post is shot from the hip, just like yours. This is just the tip of the iceberg. I haven't even touched on women's issues or the rank history of its foundations.

So anyway. It's weird here, and people don't suck if they acknowledge it and don't love it.

Trey Burke wasn't a very good basketball player, which is a shame.
