I understand that. His point was that there would be more. There won’t. Clearing cap space only gives more salary to another team leaving the number of teams equal.
Not necessarily true. If two teams each have $10m and then Team A makes a trade to Team B for $10M, you now have one more team that could offer Hood a contract for up to $20M. Also, there are many more teams in the mix than you may think due to contract options and cap holds which could be renounced.
I went through the list of possible landing spots for Hood:
Most likely:
Philadelphia or Dallas. Philadelphia makes SO much sense. Hood replaces Redick. So many lineup possibilities depending on where Simmons plays and if Fultz can ever fix his shot and be their PG. I wouldn't say Dallas would rebuild around Hood, but he'd be a very good starter to acquire this summer. Matthews will be in his final year and would come off the bench or be traded.
Others who will have $20M in cap space - (or could easily clear that much):
Atlanta, Indiana, Phoenix, LA Lakers, Chicago, Sacramento: I listed these teams as less likely because most have established SG's, or in the case of LA, we know they'll go after stars.
Less likely scenarios:
Cleveland: if LBJ leaves, Love likely gets traded. Doubt they bring back IT who doesn't look like half the player he was last season. The BKN pick, Crowder and Hood would be a decent start for a rebuild.
LA Clippers: If the Clippers miss the playoffs, is Doc's job safe? If he leaves, I can see Austin declining his option out of spite and signing elsewhere. Jordan may also decline his option. That opens up a need and a salary slot for a SG.
The rumors that Hood is drawing interest from a lot of teams also indicates some others who may be around the salary cap would like to have him and then re-sign by using his rights or match an offer sheet. There are just too many possibilities for Rodney and I'm on board with those who believe he gets $17M-$20M. If DL doesn't want to match, he needs to get what he can. Personally, I'm hoping for a pick in the 20's from a playoff-bound team.
