Utah Trade Deadline Discussion

Every year people underestimate how much money will be available in free agency. Teams are going to clear cap space. Someone is going to throw a big offer Hood's way.

mirotic has not exactly lit it up the last few games. There is no way I give them a first round pick.

That's who he's been his whole career. Would be silly to think he automatically became a star at age 27. I think Chicago would be laughing all the way to the bank (er, draft) if someone gave them a moderately high first for him.

I'm ready for this crap to be over. Even if we sit on our hands (as depressing as that sounds).

If someone clears cap space, that means someone else has taken it on.

Which doesn't mean that there are necessarily any fewer teams with cap space, and more importantly, it's not so much about the number of teams with cap space as it is one team having enough and wanting Hood.

I understand that. His point was that there would be more. There won’t. Clearing cap space only gives more salary to another team leaving the number of teams equal.

As far as one team wanting Hood, so be it. Let a team overpay for him. The guy has been our worst defensive player this year and is wildly inconsistent on offense. Why the hell do we care if someone is foolish enough to pay him 17M per?

So you don't want to pay him but you are also against getting something out of him before he hits the market?

Yep. That’s what I said.

I simply said trading him for the sake of trading him doesn’t make sense and that signing him to 17M per year (a figure thrown around here) makes no ****ing sense given the market and his value.

My ideal situation is trading him for an expiring and as high a pick as possible. Or packaging him and Favors for an expiring and an even higher pick.

The first part is incorrect. Teams creat cap space all the time. Can do uneven trades with teams over the cap... it isn’t a zero sum game. Some guys will also return to their own teams which leaves more space for the free agents down the ladder.

There will be less space but it isn’t going to affect everyone equally guys near the top still gonna get paid and many overpaid. There will be more mid level and minimum guys that probably could have received more. Think Hood is above the MLE guys and some one will pay at least 15M for him unless he gets seriously hurt.

I think he’d be playing right now if he was going to be on the team past the deadline.

You’re right. I should not have made it so black and white. That said, I don’t think this off-season will have many trades like you’ve described. Too many teams are gonna be so cash-strapped, I just don’t see enough options to do such.

I'd love to see the Jazz get super aggressive and go get someone like Blake Griffin. He's on a long-term deal and would be a good fit next to Rudy. Unfortunately, I don't think there's any way that happens.

Nah fly under the radar... get Niko for a couple seconds and Favs... move hood if you find something palatable... low key good moves... no blockbuster needed.

Often true but not always. That is precisely what George Hill was betting on and he lost.

Not necessarily true. If two teams each have $10m and then Team A makes a trade to Team B for $10M, you now have one more team that could offer Hood a contract for up to $20M. Also, there are many more teams in the mix than you may think due to contract options and cap holds which could be renounced.

I went through the list of possible landing spots for Hood:
Most likely:
Philadelphia or Dallas. Philadelphia makes SO much sense. Hood replaces Redick. So many lineup possibilities depending on where Simmons plays and if Fultz can ever fix his shot and be their PG. I wouldn't say Dallas would rebuild around Hood, but he'd be a very good starter to acquire this summer. Matthews will be in his final year and would come off the bench or be traded.

Others who will have $20M in cap space - (or could easily clear that much):
Atlanta, Indiana, Phoenix, LA Lakers, Chicago, Sacramento: I listed these teams as less likely because most have established SG's, or in the case of LA, we know they'll go after stars.

Less likely scenarios:
Cleveland: if LBJ leaves, Love likely gets traded. Doubt they bring back IT who doesn't look like half the player he was last season. The BKN pick, Crowder and Hood would be a decent start for a rebuild.
LA Clippers: If the Clippers miss the playoffs, is Doc's job safe? If he leaves, I can see Austin declining his option out of spite and signing elsewhere. Jordan may also decline his option. That opens up a need and a salary slot for a SG.

The rumors that Hood is drawing interest from a lot of teams also indicates some others who may be around the salary cap would like to have him and then re-sign by using his rights or match an offer sheet. There are just too many possibilities for Rodney and I'm on board with those who believe he gets $17M-$20M. If DL doesn't want to match, he needs to get what he can. Personally, I'm hoping for a pick in the 20's from a playoff-bound team.

A lot of players got burned thinking that last year. How did that work out for Hill? He lost a lot of money and was forced to play for the Kings. Also turned out to be a disaster for Noel.
