FIFA World Cup 2018

I usually watch some World Cup. Sucks that USA isn’t in it though.
I watched a lot of Portugal vs Spain and it was very entertaining. Watched about half of the Argentina game and enjoyed it. I thought Messi played pretty poorly. Watched a bit of the Denmark game.

I actually like women’s World Cup games better though. Not only are many of them hot but I also think they have more shots at the goal which makes it more exciting. I’m thinking that maybe the men are too good technically and therefore rarely make mistakes that lead to scoring opportunities. Where as the women have more mistakes and play a bit “looser” which leads to more opportunity at the goal.
Helps that the USA women’s team is usually really good too.

My theory on why the US women’s team is much better than the men’s is that athleticism makes a bigger difference than skills with women.
The US female players are very athletic and capable of outrunning the opponents.

How about recently?

If by recently you mean that I remember watching (1990 ish and beyond), 4 different teams that I recall.

I could be biased I guess but the passion in the stands and the media coverage in Spain is truly great. And there must be a reason why the greatest players all want to land a gig in Spain: Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar..

Even David Beckham went to Real Madrid. The fact that there are 2 giants in the league, Real Madrid and Barcelona, makes it sweeter when a smaller team beats them.

Maybe in S.American qualifiers? Any other competition is it always head to head results, then total wins, then goal differential. Props to Peru anyway, they played way better than I was expecting. But to be honest Denmark played way worse than usual and still managed to win, all that experience playing in top European leagues matters.... both Sisto and Eriksen looked nervous and made bunch of sloppy passes, Jorgensen was kind of meh.. I would rather see Cornelius or Fisher as a striker.... Eriksen usually is clinical in finishing those one one chances and this time he hit the keeper instead of the corner of the net at the end of the game where he could have made it 2-0. Anyway, nothing would make me happy if Peru beats France and both Peru and Denmark advance, your fans were amazing and it is so crazy that so many were able to make it to Russia from relatively poor country.

Peru is kind of under the radar, just like the Jazz. Its play shouldn't surprise others: they ve' been undefeated since 2016 and with some top-3 finishes in Cup America. I think Peru is top-9 in the Fifa world ranking. Those are some nice accolades but Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay and even Argentina (who is playing like total crap) get more attention. Peru's best player (Guerrero) is considered the best S.American 9 besides Suarez. I can imagine Peruvian players joining top European teams after the World Cup (most are playing in lesser leagues like Portugal, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium...)

Peru also played poorly. Usually they are very efficient and don't waste chances. Guerrero, Farfan, Cueva and Flores are deadly. They prefer to counter-attack/play fast rather than pressure the ball/come from behind. The game would've been very different if they had scored that penalty in the first half. Also, Peru's defense was poor, which was shocking. I believe Peru was closer to the tie than Denmark to 2-0, but yeah, Denmark missed a few clear chances at the end.

I like Eriksen, he is amazing in the Spurs but played poorly today. I hope we eliminate France, that would be amazing.

Yeah, many Peruvians traveled all the way to Russia. First World Cup for many as the last time we qualified was 36years ago.

Note: Peru is a mid-income country

Well if you're not counting last season over the past 10 years there's been 2 teams that won it.

Yeah I didn't find Lima super cheap like other parts of South America

I watched four games at the Nou Camp 2 years ago, including Celtic getting flogged, was awesome.

I enjoy the world cup... but basketball is so much the superior sport. Im not pretending to change any minds as ive had this discussion before with friends and never seemed to get anywhere... but the offsides rule gives too much discretion to the refs and most the time theres any good action it ends up with guys tripping and the ball being kicked out of bounds.

My 2 cents

There's the video review system this year, it's making the refs a lot more accountable and major plays reviewable. Should have been implemented ages ago but at least it's here now.

This is what I dislike most. 90% of the time something exciting is happening it ends in disappointment

It should awaken the Germans. Let's see.

It should. But Mexico's is exploiting Germany's right side at will. Low needs to make some changes.

What a game! An inferior team (in theory) just playing their hearts out and taking it to mighty Germany. That's why I love football so much

The great Johan Cruyff wanted to straight up abolish the offsides rule. It would definitely be interesting to watch and there would be a lot more scoring.

I feel like there are quite a few things that could be done to increase the scoring but really soccer is the most popular sport in he world and if it ain’t broke then don’t fix it for us dumb Americans imo.
