Jazz Free Agency Summer of 2018

Just food for thought...

Spurs get Ingram, Hart, Bradley, Utah 2019 top 20 protected 1st, multiple draft picks from the Lakers
Lakers get Kawhi and Burks
Jazz get Kuzma and Deng
http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=y9q2azqo

The Spurs get 3 young players and probably 3 first round picks (1 from us and 2 from LA)

Lakers get Kawhi. This trade means they spend only $4 million more (Kawhi and Burks) instead of (Deng, Ingram, Kuzma and Hart). In other words, their dream of Kawhi, LeBron and PG is possible.

We get Kuzma for a highly protected pick and taking on Deng. We use a trade exception to get Kuzma.

Honestly, I like it. I don't think it would actually go down but man that seems to make some sense for every team. The Jazz would also just then likely just use the stretch provision on Deng's contract.

Not sure if the Lakers can get the big three like you say (they’d have to renounce guys maybe?) and I def think the Spurs would want more (we can’t protect that pick—maybe top 10 but not top 20), or at least I’d have to see more specifics on what those Lakers picks would be, but that does look pretty damn solid.

That said, I could see the Spurs preferring to deal with the Celts since they’re out East.

I would keep Deng. I don't think he is done yet and I don't want to pay him $8 million a year the next 5 years.... We still have so many cheap guys that we can afford to just pay him the next two years.

Also, if you noticed, we could keep Favors AND Exum and any of the non-guaranteed guys we wanted. Pretty stacked roster.

Boston has the picks. Boston has the young players. Boston does not have the contracts required to make the deal work financially unless they trade Kyrie, Hayward or Horford. I think they need a 3rd team who really wants one of those 3 and will send more assets to San Antonio.
so what you are saying is that boston has the picks, the young players and the contracts required to make a trade with the spurs.

You think Boston would trade Hayward, Horford or Kyrie for only 1 guaranteed year of Kawhi?

I don't.

I do. Kyrie might be one year as well. Hayward isnt any where near the player Leonard is and they have Brown and Tatum that can fill his role just as well or better. Horford is a good player but is declining. Plus Horford has next season (1 year) and then a player option after that. Kawhi is the type of player that could get them a championship. Its more about what the Spurs will take back then what Boston will give up. If I was Boston I would trade Kyrie in the blink of an eye for Leonard. Then start Rozier and retain Smart if possible.

I agree with a bunch of what you are saying. I personally feel that Boston would not trade Hayward, Kyrie or Horford.

And to your other points, I don't think San Antonio wants Kyrie, Hayward or Horford. Kyrie can leave after a year, Hayward is not worth his contract and Horford is too overpaid/old.

Financially, this trade is really difficult.

I agree that Spurs might not want those guys. I think they would take Hayward. Boston is not loyal to players. Ainge will trade anyone if he thinks it makes his team better. You dont need a team that has Leonard, Brown, Tatum and Hayward. One of those guys has to go and the easiest one is Hayward. He is paid a lot and not as good as Leonard. The young guys have rookie contracts as well. But Spurs might like Kyrie as well, I have no idea how they feel about him. Especially if they got Kyrie and Brown. Plus rumors have said the Spurs like a lot of players and assets from Boston.

There is also the fact that a 3rd team will get involved. That is fairly common in big trades. Maybe Spurs go into more of a rebuild. They could take picks and a young player from Boston and Kyrie gets moved to a team that also sends a young player and/or picks to Spurs. A 3rd team makes it much easier to complete this trade.

I do think Lakers will trade for him though. They also have decent assets.

So when Dallas does the DJ deal Favs is basically sunk. I'd offer him the following options:

1 year 10M
2/30 with team option on second year or only 1M guaranteed
3/36 with the deal as front loaded as possible. So 13,12,11.

If it is a straight one year deal I would give less just because we don't get much upside. My guess is he'd take option 2... makes 16M if he gets cut or 30 for a couple years.

His FA timing could not be worse. Capela, DMC, and DJ (apparently) all ahead of him on the FA list. One team really looking at a big. His only option may be like 4/38 with a MLE offer.

Niko signed a placeholder deal and was dealt for a 1st... these deals are assets. If not he's a good player and there is a lot of value in those deals. Letting him walk for nothing wouldn't be wise.

S&T options are pretty limited, but I'd be happy to go that route too.

LA probably wants to give them Ball as a centerpiece. SA likely wants Ingram or Kuzma

I'm guessing it ends up being Kuzma, Ingram, Deng and their pick next year. It's a lot, but you are getting Kawhi and LBJ and maybe Paul George.
