What's new

Jazz Free Agency Summer of 2018

No that is the answer. It was a silly question with an obvious answer. If Rubio improves over what he was the second half of last year (15 and 5 on .400+ 3 point shooting) and the Jazz are a better seed heading into the all-star break he could be an all-star. Did you want more specifics?

All Stars' all about fans voting. Fans don't care about shooting %. How will he get more votes over the likes of Curry, Lillard, Westbrook, Harden, Paul and Klay? You're the one saying he'll get $25m - explain yourself.

So if he improves over last year and makes the all-star team this year you will balk at 25 million? That is the scenario I have painted.

Do you realize how good the point guards are in the west? Westbrook, Curry, Lillard, Chris Paul, just to name a few. There is a 0% chance that Rubio will be an all star. Mitchell and Gobert would both make it ahead of him and there is no way the Jazz are getting 3 all stars.

What are the going rates for all-stars? 25-30 million?

What are the going rates for solid starters in the NBA? 15-20 million?

What are the going rates for 6th man players 10-15 million?

I think people are just off on their contract amounts and expectations. This year was also a really lean year. So a lot of players went for less than they should. There was a lot of 1 year deals for that reason.

I think you need to look at the pecking order at the position though too... Available FA point guards next year... Kyrie, Kemba, are very likely to have more "value" then some other interesting guys like Rozier, DeAngelo Russell, Delon Wright maybe more appealing to teams that are young and building. Others include Goran Dragic, Eric Bledsoe, Malcolm Brogdnon (kind of a PG).

Kind of loaded at that position... so even if he is good... the market may not be as ripe for him as it will be for others.

All star in the west is like first team all nba... All star in the east... then maybe.

I'm hoping we get one all star... that might be tough if we don't come out of the gate with flames coming out our butt holes.

Right... I'm saying an extension this year would have to be at a discount... if he tears the league up for a year and is Rick Curry... then I could see him getting 20-25, but giving 18-20 now is risky... what if he blows up his knee again? We give long term security... but only at a good discount. If he is a 25-30M player then the cap hold of $22M is fine and we just work around it... offload Exum and Crowder to get the space we need to sign another guy.

100% agreed.

Fans are not the only ones who decide who gets into the all-star game... They only determine the starters. So that kind of ruins your argument there. But I can keep going if you want.

Fans also care about winning. If Portland isnt in the playoff picture and the Jazz are sitting in the 3rd seed spot he will get in over him. There are also health concerns with many of those players listed. Also GS is not getting in Curry, Green, Durant, and Boogie. So touches will be down. There is a decent chance Klay is the one who suffers and does not get in along with Green.

If (its a big if thats why we are talking about numbers) Rubio improves his numbers will be better than I posted. If he is around 20 ppg and 8 assists and we are the 3 seed then he will get in. He probably wont be voted in by fans but the coaches will put him in.

I agree that is the most likely scenario. I am discussing his worth if he makes another big jump like he did what he would get. I think if he plays like he did the second half of last season he will be offered a contract around 18-20 million in an extension. Assuming Exum hasnt broken out as well.

Last year Lillard missed out. Rubio would have to be at that level to get in.

This. If anything Mitchell makes an All Stars game before Rubio in this lifetime.

And you make wild speculations as if they're facts... that's my I try to ignore most of them.
I am not making wild speculations. I said if he made another jump and became an all-star he would get 25 million. That is not my guess. I already said I think he will get around 18-20 because I think he will play like he did in the second half. I think you struggle to read things sometimes and glam on to the little things and cant get past them.

Again you have not said what you think he will get based on how he plays.

If he plays like he did last year in the second half what do you think he will get offered? More or less than what Hill was offered?

If he improves his play over the second half of last year what do you think he will get?

Based on your assumption of how he plays what do you think he will get?

You said Rubio will make an All Stars team next year.

How do you think he'll do that over Lillard who didn't make it last year?

How do you think he'll do that over Donovan Mitchell? (they're both 'guards' in selection)

I guess best case scenario is we get Exum on a good contract and he breaks out big time next season. That way we can let Rubio go and try and add another max player with our cap space. I'm just very reluctant to give Rubio huge money. He's been one of the worst shooters in NBA history throughout much of his career. He's shot the ball well post all-star break the past 2 seasons but he's yet to prove he can shoot well for an entire season. He also shot the ball really poorly in the playoffs at just 35% overall and 31% from 3. He's also had a few injuries throughout his career, that should be taken into consideration.

There also appears to be a lot more money going around next year though as well. I think Rubio might have some pretty high value if the Jazz play very well like a lot of us expect. His impact was huge on this team in the second half. I think our winning streak had just as much to do with him improving as it did with Gobert coming back. Although it also had a lot to do with an easy schedule.

I think he will be worth a lot more than those second guys you have listed and possibly in the same conversation as the guys in your first list. Kyrie is really hard to predict though.

Let’s just say that if Rubio pays at an all star level rather than making an actual all star game... cuz in the west that ain’t happening... could he have as much impact as eastern conference all star Kemba Walker... for sure.

This. Hopefully Exum develops sufficiently this year. And we can sign another 'star' next year when we have cap space.

I take it you are drinking today? I said "If he is an all-star level player he will demand closer to 25 million next year." I never said he would make the all stars team this year. I dont think he will make the all-star team. If (I am assuming you know what this word means but this is a big assumption) he is an all-star next year he has made another big jump in his game. I would not predict that but it is within the realm or reality that he makes anther big jump since he made a big jump with our staff throughout the year. I think he will play for the whole season close to what he was in the second half.

Well whatever he does I'm not paying $25m for Rubio.. LOL ..
