2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

Here's something I could go for (may need to add some minor pieces of salary but it's pretty close)...

Favors and Bradley to Charlotte.

Biyombo to Cleveland and a first with some protection to us.

Love, cash, and those two second rounders back to us.

I would not send a 1st for Kevin Love. I think Favors, Neto, Bradley and maybe a 2nd is plenty.

Before I do anything, he has to show he is ready to play soon. The medical would be a huge part of the deal.

I'm not talking about sending a first. The deal is basically Favors/Bradley to Charlotte, Biyombo to Cleveland, Love to us, and all draft picks (Charlotte first and those two Cleveland seconds) back to us.

In short, if we can't land any free agents this summer or next, then we're kinda screwed unless some kind of internal growth really exploded. So Love ends up being a do-or-die move. Does that give us a strong enough core over the next three years that we can tweak around it with strong role players to contend? If Donovan makes a jump and Rudy maintains, then there's a good argument of yes.

I don't like acquiring Love. Locks in the Jazz team, Love is aging, hurt and a very large liability in half the game.

Sure, but I don't think Love ever plays a full season again. That's a real problem.

Exactly why you don't make a Love move now. Make it when you at least try in FA first.

I don't disagree, and that's been my concern. The only thing I'm theorizing is that if it happened, it's because it's an indication that it's not believed that other targets are all that possible.

Does that work, though? We can trade expiring salary now, but in free agency it would require renouncing everyone, including Rubio, who I think the Jazz would want to keep around if we got Love.

But even so I still think the Jazz would rather remain flexible and even keep Favors over acquiring that deal right now.

I wouldn't even do it this FA. I'd wait through this FA AND next

I wouldn't. The largest benefit of having Love would be what you'd get over the next 2.5 years. After that you get significantly diminished returns. I would not trade for him at all at that point.

I agree. If we think Love can be our missing piece, the time has to be now. I've said this before, but our window with the current roster is now. Korver, Crowder, Ingles and even Rubio are at their peak. In a couple years, they are either gone or have taken a step back. If you add a stretch 4 rebounder like Love, guys like Korver and Ingles are even more valuable.

My biggest issue is that he is currently hurt. We don't know how much he can help this year. However, a healthy Love is a fantastic fit for our team. If he was 100% healthy for a playoffs, I think we could upset almost anybody. Gobert is that good at protecting the rim. We just need more offense.

No to love

What if we were able to land Buddy Hield in addition to Kevin Love?

And the huge downside is you lock in the team because after these two FAs, Don gets his max extension and no more cap space.

And that's my point that I wouldn't acquire Love at all.

I have major reservations about Love's contract, but there is one thing that must be pointed out. The salary cap spikes $7 million this summer and another $9 million for the 2020-21 season. The luxury tax is going up to $134 for next season and a ridiculous $143 for 2020-21. So in many ways, Love's $30 million deal starting the 2020-21 season isn't that much different than Favors' $17 million deal signed last summer.

With regards to Love, I ask two main questions:

#1 - Is he our missing piece? If yes or even maybe, we have to consider it.

#2 - If the answer to #1 is yes, will our ownership pay to keep and even build around a roster that includes his contract?

[ ] Mitchell has reached his prime.
[ ] Gobert has reached his prime.

Both are no. In the meantime GSW has 5 all-stars. Our current squad gives them trouble but it's not realistic to expect to eliminate them on a 7 game series.
This Utah team needs offensive talent asap but they need to be meticulous and patient about their next move.
In the meantime there's no harm in being alert and proactive to make a deal with a poorly managed team from East.

Woj mentioned some teams from Western Conference are looking to acquire Otto Porter. Windhorst then said these are SAC and UTA.
OPJ looks overpaid but I can see why Utah has been interested in him since a while. Spuresque high IQ player that should flourish when given a bigger role and fit well alongside DM and Rudy. Can he be that guy? That's the golden question.
