The readout is much worse than I figured it would be, which makes me wonder why Trump released it.
He may have believed that because it doesn't include an outright quid pro quo, although it does come close, that it would fall short of people's expectations. I think this was a miscalculation on his part.
He may have been counting on the media to repeat what he said about Biden stopping Ukraine from prosecuting Hunter, without adding that Hunter was never the target of prosecution to begin with. This is think will probably be how that ends up going.
Doesn't seem like that's going to be nearly as helpful to Trump as the first bit will be damaging to him, though.
A small item from the Trump-Ukraine call memo that will go under-reported:
It's notable that Zelensky specifically tells Trump that Ukraine is ready to buy more Javelin anti-tank missiles. In 2018, it was reported that the Ukrainian government specifically felt that it would not be permitted to buy exactly that model of missile from the Trump Administration if it provided too much assistance to the Mueller investigation.
That line demonstrates that Zelensky understands the stakes if he refuses Trump's request to work with Giuliani and Barr.
