What's new

Shaq

I also hope and think this makes Royce better, and I think prioritizing giving Shaq minutes is looked at in the light of making Royce better, because Royce is given the toughest assignment every single night. And there isn't a single other person tasked with any kind of expectation on the perimeter, and the results I believe have become underwhelming because he's asked to do this more than he should (like Rudy). So if Shaq can take some of that pressure off, it will have a synergistic effect.
They are different types of defenders but this will help.

I think this pushes all the guys ahead of him on the depth chart. If they aren’t defending they can grab some bench cuz Shaq will. Joe, Royce, Niang, Mike JC... defend or sit. Part of the reason I wanted him is there are a number of ways he can find himself on the court... got great positional versatility.

Just a money saver... nothing more to see there. I think they also got cash in that deal so it was more than just the 300k in salary plus the tax saved. I think it makes more sense now as we weren’t going to get all the way under the tax without a bigger trade anyway... that is still on the table... maybe even more so now... say Shaq and Oni are both ready and they feel they can comfortably trade Mike or Royce or someone with a bigger salary.

Once you hit the tax no need shaving a million or two around the edges... in for a Penny... in for a pound.

Before this signing there was a chance they could duck the tax if Doke didn't sign for 120%. That's out the window now, so I don't know why they would spend a second to get rid of Tucker's small tax hit. It would be significant if that small amount of space saved them from the tax, but this really just saved them a tiny amount. Especially when you consider that they paid >$3M for Hughes. Strange...whatever, they landed the correct target. Hope Shaq is healthy soon.

so maybe i'm wrong about this guy... he's not just a defense specialist after all... imagine having Royce handling the ball ,running the pick and roll, breaking down defense against a very good playoff team in Indiana... we might be looking at DM's long term backcourt partner folks

Welcome to the bandwagon... seating will be limited so please allow room for others to join. Enjoy the ride!

Not to be a downer, but next offseason I don't think the Jazz have any real advantage over anyone else in keeping him if he pops here.

Udoka already signed... I doubt they did that deal or I think you’d have heard something... maybe not.

DL realized he ****ed up the math so needed to add a player... can you imagine getting to the end of the year being $400k into the tax?

They are different types of defenders but it really doesn't matter because we were defaulting Royce to anything that needed a defender, whether he did it good or not (see Murray).

We don’t but familiarity and would have either taxpayer MLE to use to retain him. That’s a problem I’m fine with worrying about later. Can also maneuver into having room to use MLE if we wanted to. If he commands more than that it means he was ****ing awesome this year.

Details weren't released, so it was possible that they were already in a position under the tax once they cut NWG. It would have made the Tucker trade relevant to get under the tax. It would have also made sense why they traded down and reached for Doke. In theory, they could have worked this out with him and his agent before hand.

In the end, just two confusing moves lol.

Several bullseyes in there. We have a culture problem defensively and I think this might at least partially address that.

Look I agree.. there has been so much weird **** this offseason... this is the thing that makes so much sense that I don’t want it mingled with the other nonsense... DL is an A+ and I’ve always said so.

Just don't look at the minutes or 18/19 though ;)

His shot looks a little weird. FT and FG. Raises up then the slightest delay before releasing.

how much cap space will we have next year to keep him long term?
Maybe the full MLE. Maybe in the tax (taxpayer MLE, which is about half of the full).

I'm just gonna be happy. Just wish the Jazz held more advantages in keeping him.
