Conley wants to resign. “Utah’s got me.”

Investing in a center to replace your backup center in 3 years is some of the dumbest asset planning I can think of. Unless you have an injury he has no way to get on the floor. Even a guy like Tillman might have had a chance to play some along those guys. The Dok pick was dumb... he could be the next coming of Clint Capela we may not find out until year 4.
No, that is normal and smart drafting. We had depth at every position. We didnt need a wing or guard drafted. Planning a few years down the road, those positions are pretty deep. We do need a backup center in the future that can do some of what Rudy, does since our system is built around him. Our system is built more around Gobert than anyone else. Having a backup that can step in while he is off the court and fill in that role is huge for us. Favors has done that this year but we need to develop someone to do that for the future and we need someone that can fill in when either of them get hurt. If we had drafted a wing instead he would have been buried further than Dok is on the roster and would be for multiple years. Things can drastically change year to year as well. Thats why you draft the best prospect and dont worry about position.

Dok might be a bad pick but not for this reason at all.

I think so much depends on playoff performance. First or second round disappointment and I think pieces will fall off the roster. Decent WCF showing and I think there will be a priority list and some sacrifices will have to be made. Finals, and really a finals win, I think they open the pocket book and try to make another run next year.
I agree with the first or second round disappointment. But I think we open the pocket books just as much or more if we get to the WCF and its close or if we make the finals over winning the finals. We really have to win the first two rounds though.

Morgan and Brantley just won't figure into any real future the Jazz have. The best case is something like Niang, and we already have a Niang. Our hope lies with Oni, Doke, and Hughes.
Morgan is our 3rd string center right now and the only guy capable of being that on the roster. He makes the cut 100%, especially with the Dok injury.

Long term we really have no idea who makes it between Dok and Morgan. I don't think we can say 100% that Dok has more of a future because he was a 1st.

The guaranteed three year contract with a team option for a fourth is a decent head start for Dok.

Yes can only go up or down 8% of the previous years value. So could do 20M, 18.4M, 16.9M... not that big of a benefit.

Could do like 3/45 and have the final year only like 3M guaranteed. Spreads the cap hit a bit and gives him extra money if he’s cooked by then.
Minor detail but last time I checked it was percentages of the first year, not percentages of the previous year. So in that example the third year would be 16.8M. (unless they've changed it)

His deal is only guaranteed for 2 years and if that is how the Jazz are deciding who is part of their future we in trouble. Where a guy is drafted and what his contract is shouldn’t factor in to the decision nearly as much as how good that guy is at basketball.

Very well said. If the Jazz are committed to their current style of play and always having a big and dominant rim protector it was a great pick and it allowed for both a back up and continuity in a position that is very difficult to fill. If you dont believe in rim protection or what Rudy brings us, the pick doesn't make sense. Every pick has risk in them becoming what we want but that was the gamble with Dok. Love the pick and hope he recovers well.

Huh... a few years down the road we are deep at the wing huh? I mean we will have DM and Royce... likely JC but will need to replace 3 key rotation players.

Y’all are acting like centers are impossible to find. They are the easiest thing to find on the market right now. I’m sorry that Tony wasn’t good and that Ed was washed and also way too ****ing small to play as a drop big but solid backup 5s are pretty easy to find. Jeff Withey was a solid backup as was Udoh.

Position matters in drafting but especially at center because you can’t play two of them together if they can’t shoot. Whereas you can play two shooting guards two point guards multiple wings etc. it’s not that hard. If Udoka was a few tiers ahead of other guys and there weren’t good wing or guard prospects to choose from then by all means play the card you were dealt. But to invest a first and three years to develop a backup center is some stupid *** ****. GUYS... we have seen this ****ing movie before. We took TB instead of White and Hart... it was some stupid **** then, and while Udoka is a better prospect than TB, it is still some stupid **** now.

I kind of disagree. I think it's smart to invest in a center right now. Rudy's contract will be up when Dok's rookie contract is up. If Dok really pans out and looks like he could be starting caliber, it will be a nice insurance policy.

Are backups fairly easy to find? Sure.

Are starting centers easy to find? I would argue they aren't. The center position is only going to rise in importance with the rise of guys like Towns/Embiid/AD/Jokic/Bam/Giannis. I think Boston is finding that out right now. They have two high quality backups, but no one who can hang with Embiid. It's really going to hurt them in the playoffs, and has so far in the regular season.

Rudy’s current deal runs two years longer than Dok’s rookie deal.

It isn't just finding a starting center. The entire Jazz system is built around a dominant rim protector. There are only a few in the league and they are hoping Dok will become that person.

Oh yeah, forgot it was an extension, not a new contract.

Well egg on my face. We probably should have held off on grabbing a rookie center. I guess Utah felt like the talent wasnt on the board for other positions, which is hard to argue against too much even though some of my guys were left.

Yeah, and who knows how long Favors will last. He's looked pretty limited this year athletically despite limited minutes. Can Dok overtake him by the 3rd year? hopefully.

Remember last year how bashed he was. Wait that didn't happen cuz Jazz best franchise in all of sports. Jazz might deserve him but the jazz fans don't after all the mean stuff that was said about this man during last season

Our system is also built around lots of guys that can shoot pass and dribble. We need more of them than we need rim protectors.

Also systems are built on star talent. We may not find another Rudy or anything close. If we had Capela instead of Rudy how much worse are we? Enough that we might consider another type of system? Rudy is a generational defender... will GS be hunting for the next Steph to replace the current one?

The system works because Rudy is a superstar defender. There is more than one way to skin a cat and you need different styles in certain playoff matchups. Say we had taken Xavier Tillman instead of Udoka... he can pass and is switch while proving some rim defense... not what Rudy brings obvi but Favs is a steep drop off from Rudy too. But it gives you a different look you might be able to take advantage of... he’s also shown some potential to shoot. He’s also a rookie and a fully functional backup right now... BUt CenTerS TakES So Longs tOo Develops?!?!?
