Game Thread May 23, 2021 07:30PM MT: Jazz vs. Grizzlies - Game 1

Added to Calendar: 05-23-21

How many games did Gobert foul out this year? Certainly not blaming this one on the refs but it seems like they were calling some pretty soft stuff on Rudy.
Most of those calls are of the variety that they could be called at any time coming down the court. The issue is refs are conditioned to call fouls based on player reactions and JV is fully committed to the flop n flail. They will call enough that it will be a consistent them this series.

Imagine if Jazz down 0-1 to Warriors.

Feeling better?

Not only did he foul out but in only 25 minutes is crazy.

I would be curious if any player on any team in any game this year fouled out in a shorter time. I would guess the answer is no.

Jazz were missing their 2 best players in crunch time of a playoff game. That's not ideal.

Rudy>Fav>Ersan>Doke, at best.
At worst, you could put Juwan Morgan in front too. I bet we would play Morgan first if we had injuries.
I don't think ersan was on the roster when we drafted Dok.

Really solid pts here. Not sure if I've seen a star player fouled out in such a short amount of time. I remember Dwill had some foul trouble in the 2007 playoffs. It was the same game Brown nearly broke his neck, AK47 played point forward, and DFish came into the game halfway through and hit some big 3s. But usually star players don't have foul trouble nor do they foul out in just 25 mins. It's not like JV was Shaq and just punishing us inside on every play.

That’s not a good optic.
I would love to see more fans or just stat nerds or dataminers dig deep into NBA officiating.

I know this would be weird but I think the NBA should contract out Ref work and the Refs should NOT work for the NBA directly at all. The referee company should make some sort of attempt at independence and impartiality.

I've been told that if you don't know everything that's going to happen in the future on draft night then you should never post anything ever again. Sooooooo no soup for you.

It's funny because I think it was one of the last couple games of the regular season I asked in the game thread if foul trouble was even a thing in the NBA anymore. Foul watching was a major past time of mine back in the day and I had started noticing that no one was ever in foul trouble on either team this year. Welp, here we are in the playoffs and Gobert is having to sit major minutes because he's in foul trouble and he eventually fouls out.

Was that the first foul out for the Jazz all season? In our playoff opener?

Yep, refs get up for the playoffs just as much as the players do.

Right?

I'd love for stat nerds to figure this out. I can't remember the last time we had anyone foul out. Has Rudy ever fouled out before? He fouls out about as much as Mitchell receives techs. Didn't he receive one from the bench yesterday too? What he was standing up too much or something?

When was the last time the Jazz had a player foul out in the postseason? I honestly don't recall any Jazz star having foul trouble and eventually fouling out. I think we'd probably have to go decades back to see Malone in 93 or something fouling out to see a similar case of what happened to Gobert yesterday. That was real weird.

Drafting Dok made a lot of sense on draft night since we didn't have any idea that Favors would be coming our way and many of us figured we'd sign a wing in free agency. I certainly thought we were going to use the MLE on a guy like Morris. Obviously, I was wrong about that and we definitely should've drafted someone else instead of Dok.
Not what I said but when I lay it out for you on draft night exactly how it will ****ing happen and you scoff and mock then you probably shouldn’t jump on board and pile on the front office when you were cheering them all the way through their stupidity.
They knew Favs was coming... there was plenty of smoke there... if it wasn’t Favs it would be another vet. It was obvious to those that had watched which is why we were super frustrated with the move. They had literally ****ed up the exact same way and were cleaning up that mess the same night they were ****ing up again.

The really ****** thing is Bane is only scratching the surface... he showed a ton of potential on ball in the pick and roll in college in addition to shooting the **** out of the ball... wait until the next few years when he expands his game. I realize we had Oni but WTF were we thinking?

Brooks is actually the type of player we needed this offseason. He's nasty on defense and can score offensively. Obviously, he's a pretty unique talent, averaging 17 pts in the regular season while playing very good defense. But we needed something in the same vein last offseason. Hughes and Dok clearly aren't the answer... And Oni is too limited offensively.

I love how I hurt your feelings soooooooooo bad last summer by agreeing with the Jazz's FO's decision that you still carry this grudge nearly 1 year after the fact. Even after I have stated in at least 3 separate threads that both I and the Jazz were wrong. Drafting Dok instead of a wing defender like Bane was a mistake. And yet in one more thread you're bringing this up. I'll be honest, I'll probably again at some point this offseason bemoan the fact that our perimeter defense needs improvement, are you again going to attack me for not knowing everything that would happen in 2021 in 2020?

They knew Favors was coming? How do you know this? If they did then drafting Dok was an even bigger mistake.

I scoffed and mocked you?

LOL

How old are you and how many other message boards do you post on? Just curious.

If it makes you feel any better, I'll say it again, the Jazz were wrong to draft Dok. I was wrong to support their logic in drafting Dok. I should've known that they were signing Favors. I bow to your superior intellect and foresight. You should be the Jazz's GM. Now may I post criticisms of our perimeter defense or no? I ask you great lord for permission, shall you give it to me oh please dear lord of draftiness knowledge?

I remember Rudy fouling out in first game against the Denver last postseason but it was in the OT.

So we drafted him to be third string but he ended up fourth string? Not sure what point you’re trying to make here?

Honestly, Ingles and Bogey are a bit redundant. We should have turned one of them into the perimeter defender we needed.

Or you know, picked up Torrey Craig for free. I can’t fathom who thought it’d be a good idea to spend a pick on Matt Thomas. The move made no sense.

I thought we signed Bogey to be the stretch 4 and Ingles was going to be the point small forward? Wasn't the whole point of ridding ourself of Favors and signing Bogey to provide more space and shooting because Ingles wasn't enough?

I was at the game so I didn't see multiple replay angles, but I thought Quin should have challenged on Rudy's 3rd foul.
