Jazz Offseason Plan

Good lord- why does Ariza feel like he's 45 years old? I'm okay with some veterans, but I think these moves would make the Jazz the oldest team in the league. I'm not sure how I feel about that.
Yeah, if Tony Jones is right, all signs point to that being the thing and us going all in on next season. Think short term deals with ring chasing vets to try to win a title. Sounds like a farewell tour and/or a championship.

Problem being, Conley can choose not to come back, and in that scenario, no ring-chasing vets will want to come here and we are basically forced to take a step back a year early. Not sure what we'd do if Conley doesn't come back. I can't fathom they'd just sign whatever PG they could for the mini-MLE and just run it back.

I'm not crazy about the plan, but I don't get a say.

Look at this awful idea:

CJ McCollum for Joe, JC, Royce AND 2 1st round picks

JC is essentially a poor man's CJ. He's paid like a homelessman's CJ. I'll pass on giving them two good wings and multiple picks. Pretty ****** deal.

Yeah its comical... but it would make more sense than what we did this offseason. I don't want to double and triple down on ancient dudes. If you told me Ariza would give us his best effort on a minimum deal I would sign him for sure. He's still productive and is the type of defender we need. I don't think he's washed but if you aren't getting his best effort then he won't be good.

I think he's a big market ring chaser guy. Doubt we are his best option at the minimum.

Tony Jones’ offseason plan from his ESPN700 interview with Checketts:

(1) re-sign Conley;
(2) draft JT Thor;
(3) sign Nic Batum with mini-MLE;
(4) sign Jeff Teague with a minimum;
(5) sign Trevor Ariza with a minimum.

Love the draft pick. I am mostly okay with most of those moves if we are also flipping Bojan for some defense. Don’t know why we need Bogey’s shooting if Batum, Teague, and Ariza are coming.
I'm on board with #1, #2 and #3.

I get a little shaky on #4 if we are keeping Conley AND Clarkson. I would rather take a chance on a younger defensive option.

#5 has zero chance. Ariza has always held out for the most money so I doubt his first minimum contract ever would be to play with us. I see LA, LA, Phoenix, Boston or another major market being more realistic.

There is a fine balance between getting guys that are extreme veterans and getting guys that are completely unproven. Those guys in between can give you certainty of solid production while also providing upside and giving future value.

Because Damian Lillard is a better player and your contending window is the same regardless of which of them you have. Reality is written in the contracts, the rumors, etc. with what happens with Donovan in the next few years. I’d much rather have the better player, and it’s Damian Lillard over the next few years.

This interview with Tony essentially says as much, he actually says there’s only a 1 year window with this team, and if you want to think Donovan makes you have a better shot the next 2-3 years than Dame, well, you’re just wrong

Tony’s talking out both sides of his mouth in this interview. “The Jazz can’t take a step back”. And yet in a year they’re going to “take a significant step back”? Like okay, so if you don’t win a title next year we’re done here? He acts like if we take a step back right now, it would upset Donovan, yet then goes on to say we’ll be taking a step back next offseason, and the decisions made now will have an impact (in regards to Mitchell) in the future. I’m sure he means with the team and front office. There’s obviously something, and maybe it was just the whole ankle situation, that has rubbed Donovan the wrong way with the FO as it existed the past year, and seems like Smith will address that. The timeline is so tight, it was malpractice to give Mitchell that player option, it gives you basically no time to fix things unless he extends with a super max in a couple years and agrees to give it a little more time once you’re pivoting to a new approach.

I saw that as well- seems moronic. An offense of DM and CJ isn't gonna be as good as Dame and CJ- I'm not sure why the Jazz would want to trade teams with portland. If you are gonna go that far in you might as well see what else it would take to get Dame.

It’s going to be a lot of short term deals for sure, the roster is already too old, and I wish they’d just start trading guys during next season when they up their value than waiting a whole other year to start the process. Will this one year chance win a title? I kind of doubt it if we’re adding Nic Batum and that’s the only significant change coming to the roster. Dennis should have been fired a year ago before he was able to make some terrible decisions.

Good post.

I will say, I think it was more malpractice to sign Favors to a full 3 year guaranteed MLE after using a 1st rounder on a center than it was to give Don an option year. I'm just glad Don signed for as long as possible even if the last year is his option.

Nah, giving your super star player an option like that when the team had all the leverage in the world is malpractice. They over-corrected on everything. They over-corrected the roster from defense to offense, and over-corrected the way they hand out contracts due to Hayward getting in his feelings. Let’s see how giving Mitchell everything he wanted and more works out for them, my guess is, no different.

It’s one of the more ridiculous trades I’ve seen. It would certainly make us worse and neither team good enough.

Probably an unpopular idea, but I still believe in Frank Ntilikina. He is a phenomenal perimeter defender. It would be a great move to appease Don too since they are good buddies. This is a good read about his NY situation:

Sell high Clarkson draft night trade. We probably throw in No. 30 too. Saves us some coin too.
What is their motivation to do that deal? We have to look at it from their perspective. Why do they cash out two good trade chips for a third guard? They can just retain Graham and they'd be better off.

I agree with you. Although I like the forward thinking, Clarkson to Charlotte doesn't make much sense on draft night. It might make sense in July if they are striking out in other areas or lose Graham in restricted free agency.
