Jazz Offseason Plan

I remember listening to him on the radio just a few days before free agency started that year and he said that the Jazz did have significant interest in Mirotic...
He did change his tune the last few days, but for weeks leading up to it he was bagging on fans for having that idea lol.

I don't think Mitchell's 3rd contract will be decided next year. He will still have 3 more years left on his deal after. And like I said, there's not much you can do this year. The big change to save Don will be firing Quin after next year doesnt go well.
You have 2 seasons left before it starts getting uncomfortable. The summer of 2023 he will likely be super max eligible, if he doesn’t sign that extension, the Jazz will trade him before the 2023-24 trade deadline.

Right. That's not next year and like I'm saying for the third time in a row, there aren't moves available even if you wanted to make moves.

I mean this year, and next summer basically will decide the fate of it, so yes in 365 days it’ll start to be pretty clear where the boat is headed.

The only decision tree I see is if Conley resigns, we trade our pick to dump Favors. If he leaves, then we have the same team without Conley. I'm dying to make some moves, but I'd be kidding myself f I said I actually expected any. I just don't see who is being moved. Name any almost any player, my thought on that player is, "he's not being moved".

You can’t just dump the pick. You have to get some draft talent on the roster. It’s actually vital you hit on this pick if it’s possible. What good exactly are you doing just dumping Favors? Saving money? Who cares.

If we dump pick 30 just to move off Favors, I think I’m going to start following the Trailblazers.

I totally agree, don't care because it's not my money. It's Ryan Smith's choice between paying $90M for Favors (luxury tax) versus having the 30th pick. Or Conley makes the decision for him and walks.

Smith isn’t going to demand the pick be traded to save money IMO. Everyone knows how important the picks they do have are. Dennis f****** them. He f****** them by not drafting the obvious pick in Bane last year, and he f***** them with some of the contracts he put together last offseason. That’s why he doesn’t have a job anymore.

It's not my money, so I don't know how he feels. Either way, have a hard time seeing anything other than "run it back" simply because options are slim. If you don't think that's the plan, your plan is probably unrealistic.

IMO, let’s see if anyone wants to give us a young player or pick to take Ingles or Bogey into their space. Save on the luxury tax front by getting something rather than spending one of our limited assets.

Largely that will be what it is, unless the price on Mike gets too high. Then things get really interesting, which may not be the worst thing tbh. I go back and forth with the Mike thing tbh. I can convince myself either scenario is okay. Hughes has to turn into something for us, Forrest needs to be at least a minor something for us. Quite honestly Dok needs to turn into a viable center for us. And they need to hit on another draft pick or two.

If I had a trillion dollars, I still wouldn’t pay $90 million for Derrick Favors. Ryan Smith will do anything within reason to improve the team, but paying that much to keep Favors is a light year away from reason.

So I’ve been muddling around with the trade machine with every team in the NBA looking for possible Bogey trades. It’s near impossible to salary match a deal that arguably makes us better that another team would conceivably go for.

About the only ones I could see happening that you could argue are mutually beneficial are:

(1) a deal with Cleveland centered around Larry Nance;
(2) a deal with Memphis for Slo Mo and Melton;
(3) a deal with Boston centered around Marcus Smart (Conley pivot);
(4) a deal with San Antonio for Dejounte Murray (Conley pivot).

It’s surprising, but very few teams even have bad/marginal money on the books we could take on for Bogey in exchange for picks.

I am even more convinced a Bogey trade is highly unlikely. If a trade happens, my guess is it’s Clarkson or Ingles, as their salaries are much easier to match.

I think it's extremely unlikely any of the 3 are traded. The only guy in our top 8 that I think they will look to trade is Favors.

In other words, fans were asking him if Mirotic could be good for the Jazz and he replied with his opinion that he wouldn't be. The opinion was not based on inside knowledge (or perhaps only partial knowledge). When he ended up with better inside knowledge, he starting signaling that the Jazz may indeed go after Mirotic.

Having something like this burn him is probably one reason he's been a little more reticent since then to speculate about what the Jazz will or will not do (though the twitterverse is constantly on him to speculate).

This case also likely points to what is likely the true: TJ doesn't know everything that the Jazz are likely to do weeks before they happen. It's worth keeping his general sense of what could happen separate from his careful reporting once he does find out for sure what's happening (the latter is not likely to come until shortly before things go down.)

DL was exposed for all to see.

He doesnt suck, hes not awful. This is the same with Quin. Both are good. Solid.

But they arent elite, geniuses, or going to maximize our chance at a title. The team that was assembled was too short, soft, and unathletic to
make a real run. Quins rotations, burning out players like Ingles, and playing duds like Niang also cost us. His lack of development of
players like Brantley and Morgan is telling. His obsession with Royce "G league deluxe" O'Neale. Ugggg.

If Mike re-signs, you 100% run it back. You run it back with everybody because we will be paying a premium for Mike, Rudy, Don, and Joe to do so. Why worry about using an asset to dump Favors if we are already "all in". It would be a waste if Rudy got injured and we just dumped Favors for nothing.

If we don't win though, we are in for a quick decline. Next summer, Joe likely leaves. Bojan and Favors are big expirings but we lack our 1st round pick. Rudy and Mike will be making probably $60 million just the two of them. Clarkson will be 30 and Royce almost too.

Maybe we trade Bojan for a smaller contract(s), but who? What you gonna do Mike?
