What's new

Following potential 2012 draftees

If we're going to criticize Beal's shooting thus far, then we have to do the same for Barnes. They're both shooting 27% from 3.

I don't think anyone's being critical, just making early observations ... things mean quite little right now .. but we haven't got much else to follow.

You know KOC is watching Marshall with a grin the size of the Grand Canyon. It will be a crime against nature if he never develops a jump shot.

I don't know if I have ever seen someone disregard getting their own shot as much as Marshall this year. It will be interesting to see once they play better teams if they will force him into more shooting situations.

The December 3rd game (a week from now) between UK and UNC should be great. They have been the two most dominant teams thus far.

Yep. UNC looks to be the better team, to me. It will be very interesting to see what Cal does on Marshall. I suspect you may see Teague guard him in transition (Teague's faster) while leaving UK's length out on the floor to disrupt the passing lanes, then, once into (a hopeful) half court set, you may see Kidd-Gilchrist slide over to put a ton of length around him. I admit, Marshall has surprised me this year and I sold him short. He deserves all the props.

We will soon see what all these kids are made of when they go against each other.

Teague vs. Marshall
Lamb vs. Strickland / Hairston
Gilchrist vs. Barnes
Jones vs. Zeller
Davis vs. Henson

.... damn .. loaded match-ups. That doesn't even mention;

Darius Miller, Kyle Wiltjer
McAdoo, Bullock

There's a good UNC-UNLV game this evening... Will be interesting to see Barnes and UNLV's Mike Moser compete.

Yeah, I'd love to see a player like Marshall and Gordon Hayward setting up our scorers like Favors, Burks, Miles, Kanter, etc. The Jazz couldn't move the ball worth a s*^& last year.

Count me in as also intrigued by Marshall. I like the assist numbers and scouting report, but I haven't seen him play really.

These are things i want in a point guard ideally and i hope to find them in Marshall:

can he make good entry passes to the post (needed for AL, and hopefully Kanter if he pans out)
can he throw good lob passes (for Favors, Evans)
can he run the break effectively
can he run a pick n roll
does he have a tight handle
does he play passable defense
does he have a good bball iq
does he have a respectable jumper (or the willingness/mechanics to improve)

ESPN 2 tonight at 9:30 central.

1. His entry passes are a thing of beauty. Honestly one of the better I have seen on any level.
2. I would assume he can throw a lob since he is constantly throwing full court passes with extreme precision and accuracy.
3. Yes, he needs to be able to finish better himself though.
4. Probably, needs to learn to shoot better so people would have commit to him more off the pick.
5. He has a handle like Stockton, as in nothing flashy but gets the job done.
6. He had 6 steals last time I watched him and his man never got past him off the dribble.
7. YES
8. No. So far he has barely even tried to shoot or anything. His mechanics aren't terrible, but he shoots his jumpers like a big man (little lift).

Marshall's biggest question is the consistency of his jump shot and how well he can defend. He's got the rest. His vision and timing in making plays is really top-drawer. He needs to work on his strength and aggressiveness. He changes the game with his ability to find people all over the floor.

Here's an off-the-cuff question.... based on what you've seen of both players so far, who would you rather have, Quincy Miller or Paul George?

I would have quickly said Quincy Miller, and I think Miller is the better prospect, but I think these two might be a bit closer than I'd like to admit.

What do you guys think?

I like George a lot as a defender and athletic wing. His shot is nothing to be threatened by.

The little I have seen from Miller he has a good offensive game. I have not seen a lot of lateral quickness from him to be able to defender quick athletic SFs.

The question is, do you want defense or offense?

Honestly, based on what the Jazz have now, they need an SF who defends, rebounds, gets out in the open floor and can hit an open jumper. They don't need an iso player or super slasher. They need a hard-working all-around player, which is why Kidd-Gilchrist could be intriguing. I'm honestly wondering if Harrison Barnes would bring more to the table than Gordon Hayward already does for the Jazz.

However, if Quincy Miller emerges as a game-changing offensive player, that would be difficult to pass up, and the Jazz can ask Hayward to do the heavy lifting on defense.

I don't think Paul George is a complete player yet offensively, but he does have some of the same tools that Miller has. Still, Quincy Miller just looks like a better competitor and a more dynamic player to me.

I like K-G, but his shot still worries me. At best he seems like Shawn Marion (do all player with awkward shot), who shot in the low-mid 30's in the most friendly 3% offense ever (Nash era Suns). It's great to have a defender at SF, but I would rather have someone I can trust to space the floor. I'm not super pleased with what I've seen from Barnes, but I still would take him (at this point) over K-G. His shot does seem fixable though. so maybe he has hope to be at least a career 35% (if he was then I would highly considering as the 2nd SF after Q. Miller)

The Jazz should just wait till 2013 to draft Rodney Hood, or maybe he will convince himself to come out this year with the way he has been killing it. Honestly though, he is like the Black version of Gordon Hayward. Nasty shooting touch, in control pace to his game at all times, good passer, and good rebounder.

Also, congrats on becoming the #1 ranked team next week PKM.

:) Though I would have much rather it been the #1 vs. #2 game ..

UNLV was very impressive tonight. I have NEVER seen a team play to win (while ahead) like this team, this game. Kudos to Dave Rice and the Rebs (and Verlin).

Miller. Not even close.
