Should Gobert Get the Ball More?

... overall I think he should basically never post-up unless it's very deep (basically under basket). I'd rather seem him focus on taking jumpers and being more comfortable with those. I think that's where he actually has some form of potential to expand the offensive game because his FT shoot looks a lot more natural this year.
That's it.

A quick gander at a Wilt game log and he definitely did this.

I am sure Wilt did that without trying. I know the Olympics are different then the NBA but Rudy was unstoppable against the USA. They had no one to guard him because they went slow. They ended up fouling him. The French guards actually looked for him as a primary offense threat. On the Jazz he is an after thought. I think Rudy can shoot the ball from outside and if he works on his hook shot he could be more than just a dunker. The problem is he is setting the screens and most of the time his teammates are looking for their shot. He should be getting about 8 or 9 shots a game.

I don't really think Gobert should get the ball more - maybe if we didn't have scoring pieces, but it feels more than ever that we don't have to have DM go off for 35-40 to stand a chance when we have lots of other guys that can contribute.

Grabbing boards and getting lobs is working pretty good so far.

Switching is up, at least against the Jazz. Hitting the big in a mismatch is basically the best play you can make in those situations, and killing a switching defense is one of the bigger steps this team needs to make.

Regular season basketball is about whose standard gameplay is the most unstoppable, playoff basketball is less that and more about having fewer exploitable weaknesses. Not being able to punish that mismatch (which includes drawing a double-team and passing out of it) is a looming weakness that demands addressing. The Jazz have a whole season to work on it, but only if they decide to.

I don't think anyone defending that Gobert should get the ball more is actually saying he should be the #1 in shot attempts. But having the option of exploiting mismatches boosts our chances of success in playoffs , the whole league already knows how to play the Jazz, small ball + switch defense.
Yes, he will fumble the ball at times. Yes, he will be stripped at times. But many times he will dunk, be fouled and have the other team's strategy in check.
The whole equation comes up to how often he will screw up, how often he will convert and how that compares to the rest of the team's shooting. By the comments of some of the people, Rudy tuns the ball over on 90% of his touches.

Today started out promising in this regard for about 0.25 quarters. Then they ignored him again for 3.25 quarters. Then he mopped the **** up at the end to take us home. Still ridiculous we don't make a better effort to get the guy shooting 75% the ball once in a while.

I know you're talking about this play: https://www.nba.com/stats/events/?G...' Hook Shot (2 PTS) (Mitchell 1 AST)&sct=plot

Basically the ideal use of Gobert post-up to me. No dribbling, no trying to force contact when it's not needed. Just a simple baby hook over a defender who is nearly under the rim.

I don't see it as a looming weakness,....maybe a room for more improvement. The Jazz offense was great against the Clippers defense and we didn't even have Conley...but it would be nice to have other options besides Mitchell being superman. I also thought the team was much better as a whole against switching defense last year by just continuing to run the offense instead of taking the first switch and settling for a small vs big iso. It was a big improvement from year's past.

I think finding the big man is much more easily said than done, but we definitely miss Gobert more than we should. The Sun's did a good job with Ayton against LAC as well, and they did so by getting dribble penetration first. Ayton is way more skilled and polished than Gobert on offense...but even he didn't get much work done in post ups against smaller players. He was really dangerous on small cuts and dump offs...but it started with their guards looking to drive and pass.

I remember being super excited for Rudy to take this jumper. When you freeze it at the top, it looks good and no one is close to truly contesting the shot, then he just goes into bad Rudy mode and tries to spazz a pass to no one. Whiteside has been freely taking these short roll 10-15 foot push shots, so no reason why Rudy should feel like he shouldn't. If he wants the ball more, he has to be more confident with the ball in situations like these.

Rudy´s brain is blocked in regard to shoot/float/hook the basketball... in fact in regard to anything that's not to dunk it after a perfectly timed and aligned entry pass.
It is what it is. From time to time it pisses me off a little bit. However, I really like the big fella... so I just enjoy all the other stuff he brings.
