You dont like the spending. Got it. However i was discussing shutdowns and measures taken to reduce the effect on covid and the how that affected the health of the economy.

You know whats crazy? My parents bought a house in the late 70's for less than 40,000 dollars and sold it in the 90's for around 200,000.

My wife had a number of clients, large employers here in Utah that desperately needed the spending bills that sustained our economy throughout the pandemic. Without the federal government bailing them out, we would’ve seen the worst depression in utah we’ve ever seen. Seeing companies like Young Living, Vivint, restaurants, and major hospitals either going broke or near broke would’ve had major consequences.

In fact, one nearly did even with the funds. That would’ve left 700 people (well paid jobs) gone from the western part of the valley. Those 700 people unable to pay mortgages and bills would’ve been ****ed. Those who did business with those 700 would’ve been ****ed. The products that they made for hospitals? Who would make them? Would hospitals have shut down without the parts this company made?

We’re all connected in some way.

I’ve always found it interesting those who whine about government spending. They never talk about what they’d give up. It’s always a demand to cut spending for things/people they don’t care about.

I’d always error on the side of caution and increase spending. We can deal with inflation. We can’t deal with huge employers going belly up.

Too bad they didn't buy a house for $40k in the the early 70's. They'd have sold it for double that. The same thing that happened then is happening now. Back then the inflation was kicked off by the Great Society spending. It was finally brought under control by Fed Chair Paul Volcker who jacked the interest rate to something crazy like 17%. It put the economy into a deep recession for 2 years but it solved the inflation problem and the economy roared back to life in the late 80's.

What we have to look forward to is stagflation as the Fed jacks the interest rate and the economy goes into recession. The House majority, Senate majority, President occupying Democrats will take the blame for the recession even though it was caused by the Fed. It will go badly for Democrats at the ballot box in 2022 and probably again in 2024. A new Republican will sweep into office and declare it "Morning in America" just in time to take credit for the economic boom.

My dad paid $8900 for his house and it is now worth about $300k.
 
One of the main reasons for the current inflation issues is that you and I are spending like crazy, even though supply is limited.

I would like to know what would have been different had Trump remained president. People talk like Biden has been president for all of COVID, but most of what happened was under Trump's watch. I got more stimulus money from Trump than Biden. Supply would still be low due to COVID (not because of mandates but because of illness). Demand would still be high. Inflation would still be the result.

Voice of reason.


The president has surprisingly little effect on the economy as a whole. In a time like the pandemic he can have more of an influence in the short-term, but still is not that great an influence in the long run. It is driven a lot more right now, by a long shot, by scarcity and supply chain issues and staffing shortages driving wage increases and, as JG said, people still willing to spend at higher prices. The regular economic standards still apply. High demand and low supply = higher prices.

Good post.

Many parts of the world aren’t even as vaccinated as we are. I can’t imagine what would happen to our economy if we still had sub 50 percent vaccinated and delta ravaging us. Covid has been horrible enough even with vaccines for the past year.

Americans are leaving less-paying jobs for better jobs which is good, we just have a severe shortage of those that really want those $12-14 an hour positions. People are going to continue to grumble about long lines at Wendy's.

A bigger problem for Biden and his admin to deal with is the inflation rate on... well, just about everything. That negative sentiment is going to be highlighted in a billion political ads this summer/fall from candidates that will claim they can fix it when the reality is that if it was easy to fix, it would have been done long ago.

I'd say it's fairly easy to fix it I think. It's not convenient for any politician to do so.

I'm not wanting to see bad numbers. Yes, it shows how awful Biden and the current crop of democrats are at handling the economy and every new number strengthens the case for getting better people into positions of power, but I'd much rather see the economy succeed. It turns out that report on jobs created by ADP was wishful thinking. The real numbers from the US Government were released. The real number is 199,000 jobs against economists projections of 400,000. It was less than half of projections and less than a quarter of that fake ADP report. It was the fewest jobs from any month in 2021 which means the economy is decelerating. The economy is grinding to a halt and the Fed hasn't even started raising rates yet. We are currently scheduled for an extremely aggressive 3 rate hikes in 2022, likely starting in March. Enjoy being able to cherry-pick numbers for a few more months to convince yourself this isn't a dumpster fire because even the rosiest of rose-colored glasses won't hide where we really are in the second half of 2022 when people think about heading to the polls.

I suspect he needed cooperation from all those people who said they would never get vaccinated. If they stick to their vow to never vaccinate, tough for him to “crush” Covid. I believe he should have known better, should have known that there was far too many stupid and selfish citizens, uninterested in helping their country, and who put themselves above the needs of their country. Probably needed ~95% vaccination rate to pull it off, just guessing. I have no idea what he could have said that would have dramatically increased vaccination rates. Esp. since ~60% of Republicans think Biden is an illegitimate president, which I would imagine makes it even less likely that they would listen to him at all, ever. I guess he was counting on the good will of the American people, but did not factor in all that absolutely inflexible ill will among the less intelligent.

Plenty of countries throughout Asia have. Of course, their vaccination rates are generally higher and/mask use much better. The pandemic has been exacerbated in America by dopey Trumpers who wasted a year refusing to get vaccinated.

As i asked in another thread, what are republicans doing to unite the country? In this case, what are they doing to end the pandemic?

It’s pretty obvious that we have republicans throughout the country and even on this board who are rooting for the continuation of this pandemic.
