Shocked that Quin rolled with House last night. He is by far the best we have at navigating screens... Book still hit shots over him but he made them a little harder.

I was a little disappointed we didn't get a second year on his deal. I think we could have but maybe he wanted to hit FA... just seems like with how long he hung out there that the extra year would have been viewed favorably by him.

He might be but if he gets more than a minimum from someone next year it will be an overpay. He looked cooked before the injury and I’m not sure if he ever gets all the way back.

He’ll be back better. I think the injury might’ve actually extended his career.

I hope so but I doubt it. It’s generally viewed as a two year deal. One year of rehab and one year of playing at a much lower level while you get your legs back. 2 years puts him at 36… we shall see.

Joe lied about his age to get into the draft. He was born in 1993.
 
Sounds like Portland intends to keep Joe and are willing to pay more than the minimum to do so.

Counted in that flexibility is Joe Ingles, whom he acquired in a trade with Utah, even though the 34-year-old tore his ACL in January. Cronin says acquiring Ingles, whose contract expires after this season, was not necessarily a salary-cap saving move. Because the Blazers acquired him in a trade, they acquire his Bird rights, which means they go over the salary cap to sign him and don’t need a separate exception to do so.

“It was about the player; Joe is a good player,” Cronin said. “He has the unique mix of talent, skillset and mentality we are looking for.”

It's very bizarre. When they first were saying they traded for his bird rights, it seemed like obvious BS. There are a myriad of reasons why it doesn't sense, including him being the age he is coming of a major injury where he won't even play until late into next season. The necessity of bird rights seems odd because, as mentioned, you wouldn't pay above the minimum for that. But then they had him report. Then they sent one of their trainers to be with him for surgery in Chicago (maybe this is routine, I don't know, but still odd), then he's going out there for a home stretch to be at games. He's already attended a game or games.

Unless they think they can retool and they're wanting his presence and see him as the guy who was sixth man runner up last year and didn't see how bad this year was. I have no clue. It's baffling. Perhaps it's a better strategy to really keep all options open as opposed to us who just waived guys like Derrick Rose.

Who plays more non-garbage time minutes next season? NAW or Ingles? Who would you rather pay $5M next year?

If they valued Joe the player we probably shouldn’t have had to give up 2 seconds… they were pretty horrible second rounders so I honestly don’t care that much. I wish we could give them truth pills so they could just tell us they made a short sighted financial move that came with an expensive lotto ticket.

It’s pretty terrible and with NAW moving to Portland and things happening so fast, I don’t think they fully understood the ramifications of cutting $3M from this year’s cap to add $5M next year. No way they pull the trigger when they see it in that light. Just wrap it up and say “we like Joe and he’s a big part of this franchise,” because really, the real money move (compared to what we did) was to just let Joe expire.

I’m also wondering if they end up not converting Forrest because of tax implications… would love to hear the local media drool over how smart that is and how it wasn’t about money.
 
I listened to the the interview on 1280, funnily enough Joe referred to to Utah as home, still I would not be shocked if he already has an offer from Portland for the next two years. They seem to be pretty high on having him around, gonna be hard to see him on the court for another team. Think if the jazz made him a two year offer he'd almost certainly take it, wait and see guys.

I think the argument will be how House “just blew the socks off all expectation” and they really wanted to give him a chance moving forward.

In any case, I wasn’t originally expecting us to convert Forrest. After we dumped Oni and looked to do the staggering 10-day dance (which we still did with House), I figured if nobody stuck we’d convert Forrest. But now that the spot is covered, I’m leaning toward us not converting. And I don’t think there will be a rationalization because that’s going to be a really specific piece of information that’s going to be easy to ignore. If it’s brought up, you get a hand wave about House, reference to us keeping RFA rights on Trent (which would have been the case anyway but this is sleight of hand), and then referencing something something about tight playoff rotations.
