What's new

How good or bad is Enes Kanter. Really.

I'm not blind. I saw a couple of plays when they were isolated where Kosta got blocked by Kanter and another where Kanter completely took Kosta out of the play. Kosta made a few put backs, as well, but not when Kanter was guarding him.

Look at kanter's body type. He's actually kind of toned and muscular. And he is very young. I think he could grow into a bigger body type. He could pack on some more muscle. And I think he will. I think you can tell a lot of times by looking at a man's neck, head, and shoulders. And in particular his jaws. He has the beginning features of an alpha male. He has square and proportionate features. He's not real long but doesn't have real short arms. Like Hoffa did. He looked like a t Rex. Also Hoffa didnt look proportional. His body looked weird. Kosta also looked wierd. He had a hunch back and didn't look like an alpha male. Now it doesn't always mean that these features will make you a beast but it will help. Just look at kris humphries looks like alpha male.

Let me guess - your favorite song is "It's Raining Men"

But doesn't look slow and he can dunk somewhat. He might end up sneaky athletic like dwill or hayward. I think he will be good

what the f*** !?!

IMO it's not really fair to Kanter to scrutinize his rookie year. He is probably going to have fouling issues and will look really bad at times. I'm expecting to defend him at some point.

What I'll be looking for is boxing out, hustling on D (even if that means aggressive fouls) and running the floor hard every time. IMO those things would maximize what he appears to do well.

Kanter is underrated in this board, he's not a project he can contribute immediately.
Maybe he will struggle on defense.
Kanter is an elite rebounder, great scorer, bad defensive player but can improve on this side.
It's a great pick by Jazz.

Pretty interesting thread just before the start of the season because we can all put our reputation (or lack of it) on the line now and see later how good/bad we got it.

Here's what I think:

1) Centre Myth: Unless he grows another inch, Kanter will be more suited playing the PF position in the NBA, along side an athletic/long centre (think: Noah, Asik, Chandler). He just doesn't have the length (ala Marc Gasol) or the jumping ability (ala Favors) to play the Centre position in the NBA, IMO. (BTW I think Favors could play the C because of his reach, athleticism and overall defensive ability)

2) Comparison to Kosta: Coming out of college I think Kuofus has the jumper but not Kanter's repertoire of inside moves. Also I think Kuofus is somehow afraid of contact and tends to shy away from it. While Kanter LOVEs contact. He'll get right in there, down low, bump you once/twice, work it inside and score (or get fouled and go to the line - which is also part of his game).

3) Previous plays against NBA players: Don't forget that during the FIBA championships against Germany, Kanter fared pretty well against legit NBA 7 footers in Nowitzki and Kaman, and they're no easy beats (see highlights below). In particular he showed that his inside moves were effective against them and I think that he can only really get better in time.

4) Projection - 5 years time: First up what he won't be. He won't be dominant shot-blocking defensive force. He won't be a rebounding machine. But what I think he can do is continue to develop that crafty inside/outside game not dissimilar to Scola's game. He's has that soft finishing touch inside as well as a developing jumper. So IMO I'll settle on a "more physical Scola". You'll still need to pair him with a shot blocking/long/athletic Centre but he can give you 18pt and 7reb each night (conservative estimate) by just throwing him the ball down low.

Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated.

Well, you obviously are messing something up. First time Kosta entered he took it right to Kanter and scored layup plus 1 over him, then he blocked Kanter on the other side. Then he dunked couple times and scored another layup over Kanter. In that game Kanter was absolutely dominated by Kosta as I said he scored 9 pts vs Kanters 0pts. I think thats why Kanter did not even play in second half in that game as he looked useless vs Greece and Kosta in particular.

Big men do not have to be super athletic to be good. See Love and ZBo.

Enes has a lot of things in his past and present that should allow any reasonable Jazz fan to be cautiously optimistic .. Glass half-full.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that after a season or two, I'll have an opinion of how good or bad he is.

Let the kid play before throwing a label on him.

You're talking about the friendly, right?

Bro, you know how rusty Kanter was during the friendlies. If you didn't see a dramatic improvement between the friendlies and the actual games, you're crazy.

I don't know what it is, but I can't help but see a lot of Boozer's game in Kanter.

The main difference being Kanter having a heart. Kanter has a good chance at evolving into a PF, where Favors has a good chance of evolving into a C.

I watched a show a couple nights ago with Shaq, Reggie Miller, Charles Barkley, Chris Weber, etc and they all said in response to a question that they didn't get much of a chance to play when they were rookies. These guys are stars and they needed time as a rookie to develop. So will Kanter. To make matters worse the Jazz are loaded with bigs so time on the court will be limited.

That being said, I watched every game he played with Turkey. Kanter is not a bust. I guarantee you one thing, Kanter can rebound. I always look for one skill that a player has to see if they can play in the NBA and Kanter's skill is rebounding. He is terrific. Even more encouraging is that Kanter looked like a chicken with is head cut off the first couple of games, as he was constantly running to set screens. He never let a play develop and you could just see the game was too fast for him. However, he improved so quickly that by the end he was clearly one of the best players Turkey had, if not the best. Give the kid a chance he will make you happy.

I'm not worried about Kanter in the slightest. He has an array of moves inside, seems to have a midrange game and go outside, although not sure he has three point range. He seems to have that Boozer touch on the offensive end that made Boozer so good at that end of the court.

Don't take my words for the truth, as my only insight comes from highlights alone. Take it for what it's worth.

The reason I have high hope for Kanter is because Callipari recruited him and speaks extremely high of him. Love him or hate him Callipari has one of the best eyes for talent.

thanks for the insight. It's good to hear opinions of people that have watched actual games of Kanter, and hear good reviews of Kanter.

Thanks

Kanter would have probably dominated college ball like Sullinger did. He has an advanced physique to most college students. Of course Cal wanted him. After that it was his job to pimp him to the NBA. That helps UK's program by proving to recruits coach Cal will promote your voyage to the NBA.

They arent going to KY for their education? :)

Getting to practice against Jefferson, Favors, Millsap, and Okur should really be good for him. Jefferson has a ton of moves and is a good scorer. Favors is about as big and athletic as they come. Millsap is an undersized energy guy with some quickness and perimeter skills. And Okur is experienced, can hit the outside shot, and should be a great a mentor of Kanter. Plus it looks like he's going to have a big man coach as well. I agree with most of the posts here and don't really expect him to get many minutes early this year. But when he does finally get more minutes... hopefully not too much will surprise him and he'll be pretty well prepared.
