Lakers Pull Out of CP3 Trade, Odom to Mavs

The Lakers have pulled out of three-team trade talks that would have netted them Chris Paul.

The NBA rejected an agreed upon trade on Thursday between the Lakers, Hornets and Rockets. The Lakers agreed to acquire Paul in exchange for Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom. Houston would acquire for Gasol while sending Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, Goran Dragic and a first round pick. The Hornets would receive Odom, along with Martin, Scola, Dragic and the first round pick.

Sources say the Lakers will instead trade Odom to the Mavericks for their traded player exception that was acquired from the Knicks for Tyson Chandler.

The Lakers were unable to meet the demands set by the NBA and will not pursue a direct trade with the Hornets, according to a source that spoke with Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

I would find it hard to believe that the Lakers wouldn't get Howard for sure now, but I just can't see Cuban helping them do so. I really don't know what to think.

If I'm Orlando, I'm in no hurry to send Howard to the Lakers for..... Bynum or Pau or half the Rockets. I'd wait to see if I can get a top pick in this next draft. The more the Nets and Lakers suck, the more leverage ORL has.

That's the same headline the Lakers were pushing a week ago.

I'm guessing by Cuban letting LA get Howard it means he has a better chance of getting deron seeing that new Jersey won't have much to keep him there.

Assuming the league doesn't come down on NJ for tampering, NJ has the best package and it's not even close.

Lopez's rebounding rate is quite disconcerting, but not nearly as disconcerting as a guy that can hardly play 50 games a season and get destroyed by Jarron Collins.

I'd love to see Howard go to NJ and see the Lakers basically gift wrap Odom to the Mavs.

Clippers are a definite player, here. Of course, it matters on whether Howard or Paul would sign with them. Minnesota's #1 looms large.

Gordon, Kaman, Aminu, and Minnesota's #1 should be able to get Paul+Okafor or Howard+Nelson. Clippers may do it for Howard+Turkoglu if they can get Howard for longer than one year.

I thought Otis Smith already came out saying there was no tampering at all and that the Magic had given permission to speak with Howard?

I too would love Howard to NJ with the Lakers getting weaker in the process. Where does Paul go at that point though? NY has no money now with the Chandler signing and the Lakers can't afford him as a free agent. I'm bedside myself with grief for him though.

In related news, the Clippers have three days to decide if they want to match DeAndre Jordan's offer sheet from the Warriors. They may take a mighty swing at D12 during that time.

Sarcasm, I assume. CP tries to force a trade with a full year remaining on his contract and dictates that he has to go to either NY or LA, thereby killing the trade market for NOR. The league, which owns the team, isn't having it. So he has to play out another year of his max contract or go somewhere else. Pardon me while I shed a tear.

.

The Odom for TPE move just seems odd. Lakers have something up their sleeve, no doubt.

The Lakers will trade Lamar Odom to the Mavericks for a traded player exception worth approximately $8.9 million.

The move is not necessarily to pursue Dwight Howard, as sources say it is a "straight salary dump". But it is difficult to imagine the Lakers trading Odom to a Western Conference rival to merely save money.

Dallas will send their own first round pick in 2012 and possibly a second rounder as well.

No way am I going to believe this was a salary dump. These ******** are up to something.

Seriously, you don't trade the 6th man of the year just to save a few bucks. Especially when you're as rich as the ****ing Lakers. Will be interesting to see what happens.

They want Dwight, or they want Chris Paul as a free agent this next summer.

But why would Orlando send D12 to the Lakers for Bynum? There have to be better packages than that, and LA isn't that attractive without Chris Paul and Lamar Odom.

Beside yourself with grief? Why? He gets paid regardless. To win a title is not a guarantee and that's just the way it is no matter how great you may be.

My view on it:

Stern is a hard cut bargainer, he loves it. He felt that Paul had diminished his trade value by speaking about who he wanted to be with, and believed the Lakers could lowball as a result. He thought he could get a better deal, and had every right to veto. Cheap move? Yes. Was it a cheap move by Paul to speak up like that and diminish NO trade value? Also yes.

The one thing that makes me laugh the most is hearing Lakers fans complain that the NBA is rigged. REALLY?! Laker fans complaining the NBA is rigged. Think about that.

toccoto, I remember the year the Fakers beat the Kings in the playoffs a few years ago, where Robert Horry picked up a loose ball and hit a buzzer-beating 3. The reason the ball was loose was with time running down on the game clock Bryant took the ball, lowered his shoulder and CLEARLY charged into a defender, but no whistle. Bryant had NO INTENTION of putting up a shot, as he never looked up. Upon contact the ball rolled away... That play to me has always defined 'super-star treatment'...

In other related news, Clippers PG Bledsoe blew out his knee:

Los Angeles Clippers second-year guard Eric Bledsoe suffered a torn lateral meniscus in his right knee during the five-month ...

Maybe Stern is a stern bargainer, and he probably enjoys the game (of negotiation).

But to paraphrase John Kerry, David Stern approved the trade before he rejected it.

It was Gilbert (and may other owners) who nixed this trade; seems like Stern was merely the mouthpiece. What will be ironic is if the Lakers turn out better because it was denied.

If L.A. lands Superman (or even another legit big better than Odom), then they will be.

No matter what goes down, I have the disgusting feeling that the Lackers will come out on top. God I hate the ****ing Lackers.

I'm not saying it wasn't a foolish choice. I'm just saying that: It was a foolish choice. To be perfectly blunt, out of any commissioner, I would want David Stern running my league. I know I'm in the minority in that, and that's fine. I'm just one of the few people who thinks, while his choices sometimes are completely unfair (like this) the dude has a clear vision on what is needed to make a league successful.
