What's new

Beverley to Lakers for THT and Stanley Johnson

The Jazz could have just signed THT outright if he was good this year, also.

I’m gonna try to be done now.
NAW was a salary dump to save 12M last year

Pat Bev is a down payment

That is the way I have to view these deals to make them make sense.

Also, it’s a bad sign when a young player gets a lot worse after getting their first significant NBA contract.

Now I’m done.

and a 26 year old. But I think they are mad cause beverly was going to bring us a title or a boatload of unprotected first round picks but now he cant
No people are mad because THT will more than likely leave next year. We are getting nothing out of the deal.

Do you guys really think if he flourishes he's staying in Utah lol? Have you not paid attention?

Ummmm sir… we could be on the other side of some favs situations… but not if we waste that space on **** like THT.
Haven't you been banging the drum on how it wouldn't hurt the Jazz to acquire and extend Barrett? I'm sure he's wanting (and eligible for) more than $30 million/per.

Yeah RJ is a better player, but somehow he remains a lower efficiency player (by career TS%) than THT. THT definitely the better passer, though worse rebounder. I think it's worth the gamble the Jazz took. It's a swing at someone who clearly has some tools.

The down payment concept is something I wasn’t gonna say out loud but my brain said could be a thing. So I’m gonna hope that.

Still wild to me they couldn’t get a 2nd for doing them a massive favor.

Fans on the Lakers side are saying the reason that Stanley Johnson was included was because THT's salary was just short of what was required to trade Beverley and THT straight up. Wonder if a 2nd rounder might have been on the table otherwise.

So best case scenario is that THT turns in to something and decides to stay in Utah. I personally think the probability of those two things happening are low.

We gave up Bev who has to be worth at least 1 second rounder and took on the risk of 11M of bad salary next year, which potentially could have been used to acquire a protected first.

Yes Stanley on a one year deal cost is a second.

They are very different. I mean RJ has shown he can shoot the three… at least an average shooter. THT might be one of the worst shooting perimeter players. RJs efficiency is largely part of his development and cutting the BS from his game. His efficiency dropped because he was doing more… it’s a natural progression… next step is keeping the volume up and getting more efficient.

THT is 27% on threes on medium/low volume. He signed his deal last year so can’t extend and has a contract that provides no advantages if he does blow up. It’s like investing in a stock but if the company blows up you get no discount on the stock… you simply get the chance to buy it at the market price… just like everyone else.

He’s a fine flier to take… if you are getting something else. Until we see Westbrook traded I will say he is a down payment… even though I am fairly sure the explanation is more likely that we just like him as a player.

Down payment.

I can't really think of a lot of good reasons this couldn't wait to have happened with whatever the bigger deal is.

Maybe one of the players involved (most likely Bev) wanted it to get leaked early so he can move on with his life.

Some wishful thinking, but probably this is just it.

Nearly every trade that isn't a clear win "must be part of a larger deal." It always happens.
I think this situation is very different. For example I lol’d at folks that thought the NAW deal was about anything more than the 12M Ryan saved.

NY did something like this on draft night with Detroit. Overpaid on draft night to dump some players… then followed up by dumping a little more salary at an unusually low price. Pretty clearly a two step deal.

If we turn around and trade for Westbrook in a couple weeks Bev was a down payment. If he goes elsewhere then I guess I’m wrong. The most likely case is that I am wrong.

Here is what I think with my wishful thinking brain… Rob had a deal with Indiana for Westbrook. They prefer a deal with us because we can provide all expiring salary because they really want to sign Kyrie next year. We can’t do the deal until September 6… they also have eyes for cam reddish… but Rob knows Ainges rep… so he requires a no refundable deposit to hold on for a couple weeks.

And there it is.
