What's new

Game #7: Grizzlies at Jazz, Friday 01/06/2012 7:00 MST

I absolutely LOVE what Ty is doing with the rotations (except for Bell of course.) What I love is there really isn't one. If guys (or units) are effective, they play. If he's got a matchup, he plays it. Great move putting Sap on Gay when Gay was playing the 4 in Memphis' small ball lineup down the stretch.

I'm pretty much at the point where I have to admit Watson is better than Harris. To his credit, Harris picked up his game in the second half. But the biggest issue is Harris does not push the ball. With him, we're not running our sets until like the 15 second mark. With Watson, we're already into our first cuts at the 18-19. Ty needs to make Harris wear a stopwatch around his neck.

Howard is really coming along. The last 3 games, he's playing like he should out there -- being aggressive, but not getting tunnel vision for numbers, and his defense is generally excellent.

I also really like what we are seeing from Howard.
I liked at the end how Hayward would not pass the ball in, but Howard quickly ran over and passed it in.
He wasn't looking for numbers, just looking to help the team win.
Maybe a small thing, but they all add up.

The crazy thing, is he looked like the exact opposite of this the first 4 games. I had him written off as a guy who was just playing to get numbers for his last pro contract. But he completely flipped a switch and has bought all the way in to the team concept.

Are we really going to pretend that Burks isn't ready for a regular gig? It's so blatantly obvious that we should be splitting up minutes between Hayward/CJ/Burks/Howard. I trust Ty is going to figure this out, but it needs to happen soon. I'm keeping a bottle of Dom in my fridge for the night Bell draws his first DNP.

I got to go last night, thanks for the last minute ticket hook-up. With all the empty seats in the arena there should be some deals to be had on almost every game.

I've criticized Raja, but after watching last night I'm going to make a couple of statements in his defense. I expect no mercy.

For those of you who liked the defense, you should at least acknowledge Raja. For those who liked that the Jazz dictated the tempo, you need to absolutely acknowledge Raja. In the first quarter when Memphis was jumping out, Raja gothis hands on a couple of early passes and took a charge that seriously impacted Memphis runs.

Big Al had to be the most impressive player for either team, because every time he got the ball in the post everyone was watching, including his 4 teammates who just stood there in awe. He did pass it out of the post twice on one play only to get it back right back and go to work. I would describe big Al's style as uneventful. He rebounds, he blocks, he scores in the post but there was nothing to wow about. He is slow and deliberate.

The other black hole of offense is Burks. Kid has never seen a shot he didn't like. His teamates like to watch him play too, but not to the same degree of Al watching. Burks pushed the tempo, and played out of control on both ends. I thought Coach was going to pull him, interesting that he did not. I think I was less impressed than most here.

Hayward is half a step slow on offense, a step too far off his man on defense. He is in all the right places, plays calm and under control, but he might be second team material.

Coach Corbin is playing a crazy game of Chicken with his team. His rotations give almost everyone a chance to play and contribute.

I saw the Kanter high post flex turnover. I really liked him high and Favors low. I think it didn't work because the defense sagged off him, and I think one of the gaurds got hung up down there because there were too many bodies down low. When he can hit that shot he will be awesome.

It sounds like your ticket hookup was in the top corner of the arena. I do not agree with really any of that analysis (I stopped reading after your Raja defense and Burks breakdown).

I am not a fan of the +/- by itself, but Raja was a -10 during his 19 minutes, it's hard to say the Jazz were better with him out there. Yes, he still makes a few plays on defense and will hit a few shots, but the team needs more than that out of their starting two. Bell KILLS offensive flow. Everytime he gets the ball he either just passes into the post (understandable) or he takes a quick step like he is going to drive, but cannot get by his man, and just kicks back up top. Whereas Burks or Hayward can atleast get to the paint and penetrate a little bit to open up for other guys.

Burks hasn't met a shot he doesn't like? What are you watching? Unlike CJ, the shots he's taking are at the basket. If he can continue to get to the basket everytime he gets the ball and draw fouls or finish then I'm more than happy to let him take any shot he wants. He's not settling for jumpers like half the other guards (CJ and Bell). Oh yeah, this is like his third game playing real minutes so I'll cut him some slack.
