Trade ideas

You could probably take advantage of some Memphis desperation to offload Collins as a result. They're terrible now. Not sure on their pick status or if tanking is on the table, but I'd imagine the timing with Ja coming back it puts them in no-man's land where they can't fully tank but may be desperate to get some talent on board and may swallow Collins if they're hyper-focused on a quick fix.

Get DA on the phone.

I just dont think Collins makes any sense for the Grizzlies. They have Aldama back now. Is Collins really providing anything for them that Aldama doesnt?

They need a quality wing and a backup PG.

Simone would make sense for them with the way he has played lately. He's at least on a similar talent level as a David Roddy, but provides more shooting which they need.
Santi ain't playing all 48 doe. They need depth in the frontcourt. I think they could talk themselves into a Collins JJJ pairing at 4/5.

Maybe they want the Collins contract to trade for a star... I kid... I kid.

I dont think anyone is looking at Collins as this guy who is going to turn them team around though. I dont think we can trade Collins to a team who is trying to get better.

If Collins gets traded it's because his salary is adding up to get us a better player and we are attaching assets to get the deal done.

I havent watched a Grizzlies game this year (you know the 3 we played against them) and thought "Oh, John Collins would really help this team".

I'd definitely do the Adams/Clarke swap. But as Cy said, I'd have a hard time thinking they'd add any additional compensation. It's possible you get a small amount of money or a second or two thrown in, but based on how many we've left on the table, I doubt we'd make a move for that. Adams would probably be a pretty good piece mid-season next year to flip to a playoff team looking for a bit of depth. Clarke would be quite serviceable, but even just dividing that Collins deal, as Cy said. Those are actually the contracts useful for a "star trade."
Clarke did tear his Achilles last year. So this year he won't play... same with Adams... and next year both guys likely need time to ramp up. That is why I think the Grizz would do it. I mean Collins is solid fill in there and they'd get like 1-1.5 more years of service (maybe) than they are currently projected to get.

Clarke may take a couple years to actually contribute but if he did get back to where he was his deal is a bargain. Both guys help us tank this year for sure.

When I watch the Grizzlies that's the only thing I do think.

Yeah, totally want the 6'1 guy who is barely shooting 30% from 3 for the first time in his 4 year career.
You mean Ja Morant? XD

Anyways, I mean Tre shoots 40% on C&S from deep this year so it's not like he's completely hopeless. He’s still just 23 yr old and younger than a lot of rookies and about the same age as most 5th yr seniors in college.

His game is mainly based on being a good playmaker and decent defender, so he doesn't really need to shoot the lights out to be a serviceable option for us.

Sure, but Memphis has always tried to shy away from starting JJJ at the 5 and if you trade for Collins you are starting JJJ at the 5 for the next 1.5 years at the minimum.

Tre Jones is fine, but he's a career backup type guard. That's probably why the Spurs arent totally geeked to start him, because they dont want to invest those starting minutes into their backup and would rather be more experimental with higher upside projects while they tank.
You mean a career backup who just had his career season as a starter last year......

Teams make horrible decisions all the time like us starting Collins and Simone right now over the "higher upside projects". And starting Sochan at the point definitely belongs to this category.

But why are we trying to develop a backup PG?

If the idea is to really start turning the ship around next year and making win now moves to bring in high quality vet talent, sure, we have a discussion then.

Adams aint starting for a year... shrug. Maybe they bring Collins off the bench... maybe they decide its time to move JJJ to the three.

Ehhhh, I just dont see it.

I think the Grizzlies would rather just go into next year without making significant moves. Like I said, I think Clarke is clearly better than Collins and he is coming back next year.

Maybe make it Kennard+Adams for Collins+Simone and they throw in some 2nd rounders? Giving up Clarke is a bigger deal for them than I think you think it is.

I am still hoping this team becomes better around him, bc I am tired of making account in every team he is playing for. But I would love it bc I would see him ball out with the best young playmaker in the league.
I hope the Jazz can rebuild around Lauri, but at the same time it kind of seems like it's going to take too long and trading him might just make more sense and put a solid 3 year tank in.

Maybe so... but I'm also figuring the guy is lost for 2 year no matter what they do. Even the guys that do come back from that injury suck the first year. I think Clarke may have a harder time than most since he's not a shooter. I doubt anyone is giving a good amount of current value for two guys that are on the shelf for 12 months and will undoubtedly take some time when they get back.

I'd take the other deal too. Was just thinking Collins could be an average front court player that gives their current frontcourt depth a boost. Might revive himself with some real pnr players and get more rim running.

Honestly, what do you think of a team that starts:

Ja
Smart
Bane
Collins
JJJ

Then the main pieces off the bench are Santi Aldama, Simone Fontecchio, and David Roddy?

Even if Collins is great for them, that team would still be lucky as hell to make it out of the first round (if they even make the play in!)

Dont forget that only playoff series this overrated core has won was in large part due to an insane Brandon Clarke series against the Wolves.

Honestly the Grizzlies are in such a terrible position as a franchise. To be this bad in a year where you have next to zero chance at finding a transformative rookie contract player is terrible luck. If Ja was rock solid it'd be different, but you cant even trust your star to be mature and propel your team.

Almost as bad as trading Trey Murphy's draft rights for Ziaire Williams draft rights.

Someone who’s kept up with Chicago, can we trade Collins for Ball?
