Potential Trade Targets

Swaps in 25/27/29 are insanely valuable since we have 3 or 4 picks we could swap with. I would rather have a swap with little to no protections than a top 10 or lotto protected pick to add to the coffers.
If you're after good picks, sure. If you're after using picks to trade and upgrade the roster then no.

That’s just not true. You can trade the swap rights and on draft night when you see that you turned the 29th pick into the 11th pick you can just move the 11th pick for a ton more upgrade the roster value.

I also think we are likely to hold and use the majority of the picks… so either way. The way we will get most of our stars is through the draft so I’m keeping a lot of those.

I don't think we'll use very many of the picks. You can't have that many young players and try to develop them. Look at the struggle this year, then add more next year and the year after while still trying to develop this year's guys. It also doesn't seem like a DA thing to do as well, nor what he's implied.

Being able to trade swaps has nothing to do with being more valuable in upgrading your roster through trades. Teams definitely value more 1st round picks in a trade even with restrictions than swaps.

I don't think any will turn into jumps that big. Things change when you're giving up your pick in the lottery. But crazy **** has happened.

I would just low key focus on top 100 players and depth - we are winning so why not. Keep the salary low and not burn the picks unless a deal happens.

IDK when DA had a pile of picks the only time I remember him moving them was in the Kyrie deal. I think we make a lot of the picks. Just like OKC you are gonna have some Williams, Chet, Wallace picks… and some Poku, Mann, Bazley picks.

I think having swaps with the picks we can trade it makes those picks more valuable in trade. If a team can get our 2025 picks from Minny and Cleveland and it comes with the right to swap the least valuable pick with say the Warriors pick it just adds a ton of value imo. GS is the main team I’d be trying to do this with… and currently they’d have the 11th pick in this draft (if they hadn’t traded it) Minny would be 29th… I’m not sure teams would make these deals where they give swaps but it’s easier to get done imo as it won’t have them restricted by the Stepien rule and will be seen as not as big a deal as trading a pick outright but could be just as valuable.

Restricted picks will land you guys like Royce O neale. When OKC traded up for the 11th pick a couple years ago it cost 3 other firsts with restrictions. I just think swaps could be a market inefficiency I’d be pursuing in lieu of second rounders and maybe wouldn’t try to force teams to give a first… it’s an in between type measure that could bring some nice upside… shrug.

Any indication he is even available?

No. But I’m trying not to rehash media talking points, most of which are garbage, and utilize common sense. Teams who are out of playoff contention are typically the ones willing to trade good pieces and they do so for differing reasons. To save money and/or reset and/or gain draft capital and/or appease an unhappy player, etc. The Nets aren’t good. They don’t have any super young players that lead any rational person to believe they’ll suddenly become good or close to good next year. At some point, it might make sense to trade Bridges and get some strong draft capital (and maybe Hendricks, etc) to tank for this draft, and more importantly the 2025 draft and beyond.

He almost traded the picks that turned into Tatum and Brown for Jimmy Butler. He recently talked about this on a podcast, and referenced some of the best things you do are the trades you don't make.

With the perception of value of FRPs today, I tend to think a lot of picks have more value than they trade for.

My hope is they either use them on someone that is truly a need and right long-term fit, or they use the draft to build and try to score with free agents.

What I don't want is giving up good players and tons of picks/swaps like the Cavs did for Mitchell. Regardless of whether he stays, he is a horrible fit with Garland.

Since they don't own their draft pick this year, and since Houston has swap rights for their pick next year, they really don't have any motivation to tank.

I do think they might be open to a trade since they are in no man's land, but it would take a crazy offer.

Mikal is so overrated....and they've made it clear he is not for sale anyways.
Yep. He isn't anything special offensively and his defense has dropped off considerably over the last few years.

Yeah I like DA but he earned the nickname Almost Ainge by talking about how many guys he almost got.

Here is my thinking on first round picks… you can almost always trade a first and you will get more than the median value of what that pick provides… in that sense you say “eff them picks and trade em” BUT the issue is to win a title you have to hit on a few low odd outcomes. To get the top tier talent you almost always have to draft them in most markets. So whether it’s lotto or end of the first… you will have to nail some of those.

I know many think we will trade for a star but with the new extension rules less all star talent will hit FA. Even when they hit the trade market they provide their “list” and we will be likely forced to call someone’s bluff with 1-1.5 years left on their deal. Those picks are our only potential pipeline of truly elite talent imo.

Now can we move some picks to smooth out some rough edges, fill in gaps, or acquire starter/borderline AS talent… yeah! But you need to have the other things in place or mostly in place.

DA is opportunistic so I don’t know that there is a definitive plan with the picks. Basically hoarding cash and will invest as the market or opportunities dictate.

My other worry is expansion, we build a good team, have lots of young talent, and lose some key pieces to expansion teams.

Yeah I’m not worried about that at all. If you lose your 9th or 10th best player/prospect and it’s a significant piece then it means you are stacked. F you know expansion is coming with an actual timeline then you can move prospects for future draft assets.

The problem is if you are drafting a lot you don't know who to protect on the "fringe". A stacked top tier team easily knows who to protect. You can protect 8 players. If you have a decent core and a ton of recent prospects drafted, who do you protect? The Kings not protecting Wallace comes to mind. If we use the picks to consolidate for veterans it is easier to know who to protect.

Yeah. If you’re smart about it you just protect your company soldiers like Jarron Collins and expose guys like your last first round pick.

I just wouldn’t even factor it in my decision making. We don’t have the timeline for expansion yet… the rules were protect 8 players back in the day…it could be 10 or 12. Once you have heads up you can consolidate accordingly
