The Non-Jazz NBA Thread in the Jazz Section

Lot of debate about whether or not a team can win a title without a top 5 guy.

Boston's going to cruise to a title without one.
On the other hand, last year Tatum finished 4th in MVP voting and finished 6th this season.

Yet one could argue that he has been the 3rd or 4th best player in his own team in these finals thus far.

Oh I agree. I was just pointing out that many people consider him a top 5 player. The discussion was whether you need a top 5 player to win a title. A lot of people think Tatum is a top 5 player. Whether he is currently playing like one or not he is still considered a top 5 player by a lot of people which the MVP voting reflects.
(17 points, 10 rebounds, and 8.5 assists in these finals so far isn't good enough to be top 5 imo but he has definitely shown top 5 talent for much of his young career.)

They sure haven't needed him to be anywhere near that caliber this playoff run.
Agreed.
On the other hand he is averaging 24 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists per game in these playoffs. Not too bad.

Regular season numbers were 27 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists.

His shooting percentages are really what is holding him back from being a top 5 guy in these playoffs. But I agree that he hasn't been one.

Defense is harder for me to quantify with stats but the announcers were praising his defense in these playoffs last night. Maybe his defense has stepped up to the point that it has covered his poor shooting percentages. Idk.

I dont think he has played like a top 5 guy but I have been wrong before.

Oof.

Bucks definitely didn’t win that trade. Should’ve kept Jrue.
Disaster trade.

Bucks are now most responsible for the Celtics getting a title, and they made that trade to beat them!

Wolves and Nuggets share responsibility for second most. Nuggets should have been the opponent. Wolves took that from us, but maybe Nuggets shouldn't blow a 20 point game 7 lead at home.

It's never been more a teams year, than the Celtics this year. Everything just went perfectly for them. 'Best player' Tatum will be like 5th most impactful in the Finals on his own team. Has that ever happened?

To be fair Boston would still be the favorite to win it all even without Jrue.

The fact that you are the "best" player on the team with best record couldn't even put you in top 3 for the MVP race basically tells everything we need to know. On any other team Tatum is just an average all-star. Advance metrics suggested exactly the same thing. This Boston team is the closest thing to the 2004 Pistons.
