What's new

Game Thread Oct 10, 2024 06:00PM MT: Utah Jazz @ Dallas Mavericks (Preseason)

Added to Calendar: 10-10-24

- I hope Keyonte is back soon. Internet doctoring says 3-6 weeks for a mild sprain. This is not the year to rush back, so I'm going to anticipate 6 weeks. Watching Keyonte's growth was one of the few things to look forward to this year, so that's disappointing.
MRI today will reveal more, but according to this report it sounds like the Jazz expect him to play in the opener.

even sucked defensively last night?

He's out there guarding the other team's best perimeter offensive player. That is extremely impressive as a rookie. He had one or two bad moments that I remember from last night, but I have been extremely impressed with his defense so far.

Collier really has to study how a guy like Brunson gets buckets. He has no vertical and his jump shot, while doesn't look terrible on his release to the naked eye, has some wild misses, so something is likely currently broken. Really needs to fix his mechanics because he's not going to be scoring like a Sexton type who can quickly rise despite being tiny. Iirc one of his strengths as a scorer in college was his ability to post up, which is why I think he should study Brunson

Cody will just be working on his catch and shoot and using the threat of his shot to take advantage of his straight line attacking ability to quickly get to the rim with his stride length and use his length and finishing touch.

Walker was definitely the best non-Lauri player. It was good to see him step-up against players who are of the same ilk and starter quality (Lively/Afford) and outplay them

I wonder how good would Key already be, if he didnt get stuck inside his head so often.

I mean it doesnt matter if its a turnover, defensive miscommunication or a foul not called.... he just gets stuck to those moments for 2-3 seconds every single time and forgets to play basketball. If he would just turn and hustle to recover he would probably be a winning player already.

He had a good game and I hope he’s healthy…but man that was annoying me. He gets rave reviews for his work ethic and mentality…so I’m a sure he’s a hard worker, but he’s really got to mature a bit. I think overloading him with playing time and responsibility is generally a good thing, but developing bad habits like this is the downside.

Collier has no touch or craftiness which is concerning. He can get better, but he’s just so far away right now I worry it will never be good. Not getting the FT’s he was able to get in college either.

I wanna put it on maturity and hopefully the tantrums arent as frequent or bad in year 2 as they were last year.

He shot and made 7 free throws against Houston in 15 minutes?

IDK man... I saw a lot of backspin/touch on that banked three.

Cody needs to shoot when open. He passed up a couple... one was really bad. He will have nights where he is Cardio Cody but I'm not changing my opinion of him or getting frustrated until 25-30 games. He seems pretty reserved and in the NBA there is no time to hesitate. So I think he is just trying to be comfortable out there. He looks really fluid and long. Defense is good. His ball handling seems solid. If a player like that figures the other stuff out then the ceiling is the roof.

Collier way better on defense than I would have guessed. Sees the floor well. I hope he keeps trying to make audacious passes for now. Err on the side of aggressiveness. He will have to figure out how to make the ball go in the basket.

TH +Cody need a little bit of what Brice+Collier have and vice versa. The latter do a lot of stuff…both good and bad. That’s what this year is for though.

I have a feeling that we’ll talk about Cody in similar was we did with Exum. We’ll talk about his perimeter defense and not much else because there won’t be much else early on.

Collier does seem to be able to get going down hill pretty well which creates some of his passing opportunities. Key hasn't been able to get separation going to the basket much in the preseason. Like he gets advantages but not enough that the defense feels the need to help.

Don't put that evil on Cody. I think Taylor looks for his shot sometimes comically he will let one fly that maybe wasn't the best. Cody can get more involved with the ball in his hand. I don't think you are wrong btw... I just hope Cody doesn't looked terrified to take shots at the rim. I still have never seen a guy like Dante as a rookie that was just so awkward at the rim that it looked like the first time he had ever attempted a layup. Whether it was being uncoordinated or being scared it always made me cringe. Their low production can be similar but how they get there needs to give me confidence not cringe lol.

What I have seen.... Taylor with the starting group hangs in the corner but there are no real advantages being created and he sees very little opportunity. Second half they get him more involved up top and he makes a few passes off the Lauri screening action or sets a few picks. I think he passed up one in either last nights game or the game before... but I think he is a willing shooter but as a stand still shooter he is reliant on others. We haven't been able to get much of a "blender" going but when we do Taylor will end up being a big beneficiary of it.

I think Taylor needs to get a little more assertive on the offensive glass. Like I would want him to pick up a foul per game at least... err on the side of aggression and then taper off just a little. There are times when it seems like he has opportunities but allows himself to be boxed out, but also I am watching on TV and not on the court and those are enormous humans.

You’re talking to Dante’s biggest supporter (he will still be great!).

I just think that with Cody, we’ll be touting his defense all the time as a distraction from the rest of his game or lack thereof. It reminds me of Dante. It’s great that he can play on ball defense well….but deep down we all know that’s not exactly what we had hoped we were getting in a player.

Current day Dante honestly isn’t a bad comparison. Dante is more of a combo guard and Cody more of a wing scorer, but I think there selling point will be their versatility on both ends…but also guys who are mostly in the background. I think he’ll fall somewhere in between current Dante and peak Batum.
