FWIW, I made up the story about the cop being shot. I thought I was pretty clear about that, but it seems that it may have come across as true.

Anyhow, I guess we'll all just have to agree to disagree and see what happens. I think it's a shame that the girl was harmed. I think it's a shame that a good cop (by all accounts) has to go through this. I think it's a shame that the tax payers will bare the brunt of the costs. Crappy situation all around. (that all could've been avoided by obeying the laws of the land -- but let's blame the cop)

Of course I Bean'd it, that was the idea. I do find it hard to believe that when it's all said and done, you actually do blame the cop for this. You'd make a great DUI lawyer.

Except I'm not charismatic at all. And I don't recall you blaming the girl for her actions at all. All I've seen in this thread from you is cries of police brutality and a bunch of old court cases. Again, how about we just wait and see who comes out on top of this thing? I'd put my money on the cop, because as I see it, he did nothing wrong.

It's a good thing the nation tends to meet in the middle (where I am) instead of reacting to radical opinions like yours or its opposite.

If a taser case ever makes it to the supreme court I would not be surprised to see these categorized as lethal weapons by the current judges. Especially Sotomayor who appears to be nothing short of a glorified heroin junkie.

You know the penalty by law for "fleeing a couple of fender benders" is not death.

I can answer if you'd like. How do you NOT see it as an unfortunate result? Also, feel free to take away the "excessive force" bit, because there was none. I'm still amazed at how some people are viewing this. What if I told you that some girl got plastered, got in her car, and crashed it into a tree, killing herself -- and then blamed the tree and the owner of the property that that tree was on? Essentially that's what I'm hearing here. This girl has a history of breaking the law, was taken into custody, handcuffed and taken to jail where she tried to escape. She was put down with a taser while she was fleeing. Brutality? Give me a break. Go watch Rodney King or any of the thousands of youtube videos that show what real police brutality is, then come back here and tell me that the cop here was out of line and 'brutal'.

I read it as franklin is in the middle of this particular debate, not choosing one side or the other -- which is ridiculous. If he meant "middle" as in political, then I missed his point and apologize. As for me being an authoritarian conservative, well, I guess if that's the way you see it, then so be it. If you want to look at what I really stand for and what I really believe instead of just slapping a label on me, then I think you'll find that you're way off.

Uh...there have been over 500 taser-related deaths in America since 2001. Is that risk appropriate for someone who flees when being held for leaving the scene of a couple fender benders (I assume if they were more serious accidents, they'd be detailed in the news articles about the case)? I don't think so, and the law doesn't either. If a relatively harmless woman is held responsible for her minor crimes, shouldn't a police officer be held responsible for a careless, vicious, and likely fatal attack? Does anyone who breaks the law, no matter how irrational the law or how minor the offense, forfeit their life and liberty if they flee?

The officer was within arms' reach of a handcuffed, non-violent offender, and decided to, without warning, shoot her with a taser. It was careless and, given the other options the officer had and the severity of the crimes committed, it was vicious. It also seems like his use of the taser, given the situation, was illegal. The woman will likely die. Strangely, everything I said is spot on. So, should the officer be held responsible for his crime?
