Big Al Appreciation Thread

At the risk of incurring the wrath of the "Trade Big Al" crowd, I offer this appreciation thread. Admittedly, Al was a major disappointment after being traded here from Minnesota amidst great fanfare. He was a liability on defense and a black hole on offense. All that's changing, however, yet Jazz Fanzers seem loathe to acknowledge it. Here are several reasons to be impressed with Big Al: 1) He dedicated himself during other offseason to becoming more fit and mobile, and it shows in his play. He'll never be quick on his feet, but his lateral movement is much improved, and he's not being destroyed on the defensive end. There's a reason the Jazz are among the better defensive teams this year, 2) He's among the elite few big men in the league who a) command a double team b) can actually play with their backs to the basket, 3) He's willing to work to improve his game, especially passing out of a double-team. He'll still drive one crazy at times by holding the ball too long, but he's no longer a black hole, 4) He's the closest thing we have to an All-Star-caliber player (with all due respect to Paul), and he's relatively young.

So instead of asking the question of whether Big Al will be traded this season, I suggest we step back and acknowledge his progress and great play of late.

His game does seem to be improving before our eyes. If he continues this style of play then I have to admit I'll be happy to have him here for the remainder of his contract. If we can get him to add drawing fouls next then I'll be really happy.

I always thought it would take Al at least one season to grasp the offense and play within it. This may have been slowed down with the team changes and shortened preseason. He has learned that the team plays better and gets good looks when he hits cutters and kicks out of the double. Al is a good post player and can be a great part of the jazz offense. That being said, he is really bad at defensive rotations.

I think he is finally getting what the offense is designed to do.

Here is the fatal flaw with Big Al: his defense is just not good enough. In fact is very very poor. Now, you can look past that at some positions, but not center. And especially nowadays with these speedy PG zooming into the lane all the time. Any wonder why we get lit up by those guys? Its BA. And remember, defense wins championships.

That said, it would be interesting to pair BA with Favors, with favors doing the bulk of the work on defense. But BA as your premier center? He'll score points on one end and give 'em up on the other.

And that has nothing to do with our pg's defense?

The problem with that is over half the teams have good jump shooting PFs nowadays, so Favors interior D cannot be fully utilized when paired with Al.

Evidence for not giving away Al for chopped liver.

Top ten NBA starters by the PER metric:

1. James 33.1
2. Wade 28.1
3. Durant 27
4. Paul 26.1
5. Rose 25.2
6. Love 24.9
7. Howard 24.3
8. Bryant 23.7
9. Jefferson 23.6
10. Westbrook 23.6

Didn't say that. However, the center is the last line of defense. From what I see, the Derreck Rose's and Tony Parker's of the world also penetrate against other teams. But some teams have centers who will step and defend, not stand by and watch a layup.

per metric doesnt take into acount (pick & roll) defense,
and is a stupid stat

Who?

The only team I have actually seen that could stop a driving pg once he beat his man was the lakers with their 3 7 footers. Deron could always get by Fisher, but it only meant he ran into a brick wall.

PGs in the NBA drive and score all the time. Maybe Dwight Howard stops that from happening.

I seriously have never seen one player get the blame for everything.
So it's Al's fault that pg's can get layups.
Hell, it's Al's fault that he is not part Shaq, part Duncan, part Jabbar, and part Dwight Howard.
No matter what he does, you all bitch about something he doesn't do.
Then you get pissed at me.
It's pretty interesting.

Must really suck for you to watch jazz games and have to watch Jeffy do his thing.

His passing has got a hell of a lot better. Granted it could just look better playing awful teams, but it's amazing how open guys are that he would just miss in the past, and now is able to find. Then again I feel like I've seen this before and saw him regress, but maybe not this time, I hope.

While I'm probably on the trade Al bandwagon, if he could get 3 assists or so a game I may hop off of it. Plus he seems like a quality person and I find it hard to root against people like that (not that I root against any Jazz player, though I'm tempted with Miles).

I do appreciate what Al has done lately with regard to passing the ball out of double teams and being a really good offensive player. What I can't appreciate is his unwillingness to challenge almost any shot. His Carlos Boozer style matador defense is maddening. I remember one point last night where someone on the Bobcats drove the lane and Favors stepped in and made a genuine attempt on the ball. A foul was called, but the shot wasn't going to go in and that player at least now knows that someone will challenge him at the rim and not just turn away disinterested as they have an open lane to the hoop. I realize that Big Al isn't the only player on the Jazz like this. In fact Paul has seemingly lost the desire to play D as well. I just hope they trade one of the two of them before the 15th. I like both players, but I think it's important for Favors and Kanter to get more minutes and there just aren't enough available.
