Even the Al bashers must admit that trading him puts us in a tough spot if we don't get a big in return.
I look at Kanter as a relative non-contributor next year. I expect him to show more flashes more often, but not be a guy you can consistently rely on. Millsap is steady, but Favors is still young/learning. We need another big. Al has his shortcomings, but 20/10 is 20/10.
There's been talk of unloading him for an unprotected first. I love unprotected firsts - and I want Favors and Kanter on the floor for 36/28 minutes a night, respectively - but you take Al off this team and don't bring a player back in return, we get worse.
My glass-half-full prediction: 1.) We let Al expire and 2.) Millsap accepts the 6th man role and signs an extension for $10m/per
If we traded Al, we would have to replace his 20 and 10, correct? That isn't entirely true. If we started Favors over Al, I would bet Favors defensively would stop two baskets that Al allowed (whether it be through better post defense, better help defense, etc). So, we only need to replace 16 points a night. When Al was hurt Favors went from 10 pts a game to 16. There is six more, and this is assuming Favors doesn't improve from last year. That means we only need to replace 10 points a night that Al gave us.
With the offense actually running. With passes actually being made, and with Marvin and Mo's ability to hit the three, do you honestly think that Paul Millsap, Marvin Williams, Mo Williams, Gordan Hayward, Alec Burks couldn't each average 2 pts a game better? What about Kanter? What about Tinsley/Watson? As far as the 10 rebs a night go, that would easily be made up by Favors and Kanter. Kanter is an elite rebounder.
Anything we get back for Al helps this team. Even nothing.
Now, let's say we decide to keep Al. He has to come off the bench. I posted this somewhere else, but here is the reason why:
Underestimating Al? So, the question is, who starts? Al or Paul? Let's look at the two players:
Better passer: Millsap
Better shooter: Millsap
Better rebounder: Millsap
Better at running the offense: Millsap
Better athlete: Millsap
Better shotblocker: Millsap
Elite "steals" guy: Millsap
Clutch at the end of games: Millsap
Better at holding the ball with one guy guarding him, waiting until three to four guys are guarding him, not passing out of the double to quadruple team, waiting until the shot clock gets down to 3, then putting up that damn "wheezy" shot: Al
Yeah, we are underestimating Al..........
He is our third best big. He should come off the bench. He has one very good NBA skill. Guys with one very good NBA skills are bench guys.
