AK - Do we want him back?

You're not supposed to care. That's why you caring so much as to keep posting has me so amused.

Also, that's Platinum Dragon.

Neither actually. You're the Grand Wizard. Dragon's sort of obsolete.

By the way, with AK, you keep the change, don't you?

Archmage, actually.

As for Kirilenko, as I said, he could well be worth less to us, right now, than it woud cost us to pay him. That doesn't make him worse tham Marvin Williams, overall. If you are going for the best team, damn the cost, you sign Kirilenko. If you are going to a competitive, profitable team, probably you do not.

Carlos Boozer is better than Al Jefferson but replacing the former with the latter was a no-brainer.

True; Kirilenko's price tag doesn't make him worse than Marvin Williams.

At least not exclusively.

Kirilenko's age, poor shooting decisions, weaker physique, TOs (relative to MW), likely worse outside shooting threat (relative to MW), possibly worse attitude problems (especially coming out of Europe as an MVP badass, then being relegated to 4th or 5th option), and possibly worse injury history makes him very possibly worse than Marvin Williams. His defense is probably better, and his passing, too, but not much more.

Based on last year's stats, it's not necessarily true that CB > AJ.

Big Al was better at TOs and blocks, too.

And I'd place higher odds on Jefferson playing passable defense on any given night than I would on Boozer. Still hoping that Big Al will decide to get in a bit better shape and actually play convincing defense on a regular basis.

Regardless.

Why do we continue to talk about AK? He's not coming back. Anyone really think any of the coaches or players that were around him could stand to have him come back? You don't bring someone back that gave 100% only 5% of the time. You don't bring back a guy that you paid millions to so you can watch him have 1 great game out of every 15. You don't pay a man huge money to watch him dress in a suit 40% of the time, and put on a dress 55% of the time (yeah, I'm saying he plays like a man about 5% of the time.) You don't pay someone huge money to read novels and practice World of Warcraft. Lastly, you don't pay a man huge money to disappoint you after you've already been there for 7 years. Do you really expect things to be different? On talent alone, he is a top 10 player. Too bad at this level that isn't all that's required. One last note: I argued he deserved max money, I couldn't have been wronger. Although it looked okay until Beno Eisleyed his knee. Injury combined with chronic mental fragility turned Ak into the pathetic, lost, uncaring ball player that he became. AK is gone, and yes, I think Marvin Williams is a better player despite half the talent and brains. Marvin Williams will give you what he has, something Andrei did not do. Blame Sloan, blame injury, blame Marsha, whatever, just please don't tell us that he's worth more than this guy or that guy. He's not. 7 years of anguish, disappointment, and whatifs is hard to overcome.

In a word: No

All the above reasons are true. He really isn't the future, Marvin is younger and could be part of the 'future' while at the same time being enough of a vet to be -well- a vet.

However the interesting thing is that with New Jersey's quickly disappearing cap space, the Jazz actually still have the ability to do a sign and trade for them to get Kirilinko even two years later. Should we fleece New Jersey even more than we have???

In a word: Yes

AK can still play and can be a good secondary player on a roster if the price is right. He just can't be counted on game to game.

Here are some results from the Russia game in the Olympic qualifying tournament today.

In Wednesday’s game against Russia, Nuggets center Timofey Mozgov turned his ankle going for a rebound just 3 minutes after checking into the game (he and Andrei Kirilenko did not start).
Horford shot 10-for-13 as a result, but Russia’s depth was too much in an 84-69 victory. Kirilenko filled the stat sheet with 16 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists.

AK on the team means fewer minutes for Hayward at the 3 and no minutes for Millsap at the 3, which means fewer minutes for Burks at the 2 and fewer minutes for Favors at the 4, which means Kanter gets stiffed for another year.

AK is sooooooo yesterday ... and this team is about the future. Our "young" team is approaching the half-way point of their rookie contracts and we still haven't figured out what we got. If we sign AK to even a two-year contract, we will have screwed our chances with Kanter and Burks.

The arguments against AK are so subjective and reek of animosity. It's like an old friend whom you've split with and you have to give an opinion about him. Of course, you're not going to see things clearly.

It's actually more akin to the girl with the unemployed boyfriend. She goes to work so he can sleep in until 1:00 pm, play XBox, look at porn, and post on this forum. She comes home and makes dinner. He nags her about her weight and is frustrated she doesn't understand how hard he's trying to find a job. She wants to split with him, but keeps coming back because every now and again he's super nice and attentive for an hour and every couple weeks he'll surprise her with some KFC. Her dad is just an *******, only focusing on his negatives and fails to acknowledge his good points.

Just go watch a few episodes of 16 and Pregnant.

What part of recurrent back injury, kamikaze drives into the lane, 31 years old, unrespected outside shot, and we-traded-for-an-SF-who-is-5-years-younger-reportedly-hardworking-and-athletic do you not understand?

It's take-out from the Chinese store, not KFC. Get yer facts straight.

I want his wife back but not him, even for free.

Since he has a free pass that means she is actively using hers...

Agree about the contract. I also think that the only way we could take him back, now that we have MW, is if we were to move Big Al or Millsap, but even then it would depend on who we got back for them. If it were a young PG like Kyle Lowry, then maybe. Actually, this argument is probably moot. Obtaining MW pretty much seals the deal on taking back AK. I should just let it go.

Kirilenko has been training with Team Russia. This week, he told a Russian paper that he could still choose to stay with CSKA Moscow (who would pay him $3 million). More tellingly, he said his agent hasn't contacted any NBA teams and he expects to make a decision by August 1. By then, there'll be little money for any remaining free agents.

If Kirilenko is (only) getting $3m next season if he stays in Russia, it is 99% worth the risk to re-sign him for part of the mid-level exception. Utah could offer him $3.5m on a 2+option deal and he is still making more than if he were playing in Russia. Utah is as much his home as Russia is and for what he can do on the court he is worth way more than that. If the only thing keeping them from that type of deal with AK is Greg Miller's feeling that AK never delivered on his max deal because of injuries and emotions, while that is true, this bargain proce for that level of talent would make up for it. AK and a shooting guard for the remaining $2+million (Courtney Lee, Jerryd Bayless, Shannon Brown, Gerald Green, Randy Foye, Jodie Meeks, Sam Young, Nick Young) would make this a strong team.

jazz could actually sign AK in that range and still have the full MLE available, because they still have AK's bird rights. they can sign him using the bird exception and not cut into any of their other exceptions.

but realistically, they wouldn't, unless they dump al for nothing but draft picks. even if we consider bell to be as good as amnestied (and i do), we have 11under contract plus murphy and evans, who are both likely to sign. that makes 14 if those guys sign and we bring in AK. i can't imagine they'd spend the MLE at that point, especially because then you'd be legitimately two-deep everywhere: a solid 4-man rotation up front, a 4-man rotation on the wings of hayward-marvin-ak-burks (with murphy and carroll as deep bench), and the two veteran PGs backing up mo.

even more realistically, the AK signing isn't going to happen. as much as i hate to admit it, it looks like they're not even considering it.
