Jazz Getting a New GM?

Any speculation on what this means? Will we make more moves with a new GM? I have been impressed with our offseason thus far. I think it could mean we will no longer be the conservative Jazz we have had to endure with for so many years.

I would like someone from the Spurs organization. Especially if we are going to build around D. Favors. The Spurs have always done a magnificent job of finding great complimentary pieces to surround a big man with.

Kind of a weird situation. Will the new GM be a for realsy GM? Or will he be a de facto "Jr GM" with KOC still making all the roster and trade decisions?

probably a little bit of both. it's probably a pre-retirement move where KOC will be around to provide some mentoring and have a few years of overlap before the new guy is 100% on his own.

Troy Weaver was my first thought as he was with the Jazz before going to OKC. Scott Layden also came to mind.

This sounds kinda sucky, I thought KOC was doing an excellent job especially since Sloan left.

Wojnarowski also mention for this job a couple of minutes ago:
1. OKC executive Troy Weaver
2. Cleveland assistant GM David Griffin
3. San Antonio Spurs executive Dennis Lindsey

Personally I've never heard of these guys. But, stealing from the Spurs or OKC is probably a good idea.

I sort of like the direction Cleveland is headed but most of that comes from having Irving. The flip side is they made two of the biggest head scratchers of picks in the draft in the last two years so I'm not so sure I'd want this clown.

The only "top executive position" that I could think of, would be President of the Jazz, currently held by Randy Rigby. So maybe Rigby is out?

Or maybe Rigby is being promoted to head of LHM group, or something like that.

I agree. I wonder if we are promoting him so he's stays in the organization. Kind of like when an NFL team gives an outstanding OC the "Assistant Head Coach" title. So that another team can't come in and just swoop them away.

Woj doesn't make it sound like that at all: "The Jazz are searching for a general manager, as Kevin O'Connor has been promoted to the top executive position with the franchise."

Sure sounds like Rigby's position, to me.

yeah, i think you read my comment out of context. i was saying "probably a little bit of both" in response to whether the new GM would be was UGLI called "for realsy" or whether he's still be running everything through KOC. no matter KOC's new job title (and i agree with you that it sounds like randy's job), the fact that he's still with the team means he'll still be involved with whomever takes the role over.

Plausible. Good thought.

Oh, sorry about that. I agree that if he gets Rigby's job, he'll quite likely be more hands-on with personnel decisions than Rigby has been.

The Trib picked up the story.

Longtime Jazz General Manager Kevin O’Connor plans to move into an executive position with the small-market organization and is leading a search for a new GM, a high-ranking team source told The Salt Lake Tribune on Monday.

Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski first reported O’Connor’s move.

Messages left Monday for O’Connor and Jazz President Randy Rigby weren’t immediately returned. A Jazz spokeswoman was unaware of O’Connor’s decision and didn’t provide comment.

A source told The Tribune there has recently been talk within the organization O’Connor plans to relinquish his GM title, but nothing had been made official.

Wojnarowski reported that Oklahoma City’s Troy Weaver was targeted for the job but will stay with the Thunder. San Antonio’s Dennis Lindsey and Cleveland’s David Griffin have also reportedly drawn interest, Wojnarowski reported.

A league source told The Tribune that O’Connor’s move makes "perfect sense." O’Connor has been the Jazz’s GM for 13 seasons and exited the 2011-12 campaign as the second longest tenured GM in the NBA. By moving into a top executive position, O’Connor can still guide Utah into a new era, but turn the day-to-day grind over to someone else.

In the past 18 months, Hall of Fame coach Jerry Sloan and All-Star point guard Deron Williams have left the Jazz. Utah returned to the playoffs last season, following a surprising 36-30 regular-season record that exceeded expectations. But the Jazz still have much work to do to become an NBA-title contender, and Utah could have as many as eight players under expiring contracts once the 2012-13 season starts.

Hmm. That almost makes it sound like perhaps they will create a new position between Rigby and the GM. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
