Longtime Jazz General Manager Kevin O’Connor plans to move into an executive position with the small-market organization and is leading a search for a new GM, a high-ranking team source told The Salt Lake Tribune on Monday.
Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski first reported O’Connor’s move.
Messages left Monday for O’Connor and Jazz President Randy Rigby weren’t immediately returned. A Jazz spokeswoman was unaware of O’Connor’s decision and didn’t provide comment.
A source told The Tribune there has recently been talk within the organization O’Connor plans to relinquish his GM title, but nothing had been made official.
Wojnarowski reported that Oklahoma City’s Troy Weaver was targeted for the job but will stay with the Thunder. San Antonio’s Dennis Lindsey and Cleveland’s David Griffin have also reportedly drawn interest, Wojnarowski reported.
A league source told The Tribune that O’Connor’s move makes "perfect sense." O’Connor has been the Jazz’s GM for 13 seasons and exited the 2011-12 campaign as the second longest tenured GM in the NBA. By moving into a top executive position, O’Connor can still guide Utah into a new era, but turn the day-to-day grind over to someone else.
In the past 18 months, Hall of Fame coach Jerry Sloan and All-Star point guard Deron Williams have left the Jazz. Utah returned to the playoffs last season, following a surprising 36-30 regular-season record that exceeded expectations. But the Jazz still have much work to do to become an NBA-title contender, and Utah could have as many as eight players under expiring contracts once the 2012-13 season starts.
