Jazz showdown: Deron vs. Stockton

Stock was awesome as hell, but when people say "stockton was the best PG or best 'pure' PG of all time", Im sorry, but I laugh. Magic, and not even close. When you have to say 'pure' PG, you are really saying, "Other than Magic"
Stock, top 3 PG of all time, easily.

If ya wanted to take longevity and overall career accomplishments outta the debate, I guess you could make a case for Deron accomplishing more (perennial top 2-3 in assists, etc.) in his first 5 years as a pro than Stockton did in his.

Sure, and by that measure Penny Hardaway is legendary and there's little to distinguish Antonio McDyess from Kevin Garnett.

No, Kicky, by that measure, as specifically, if artificially, limited, you would only look at five years. The (conditional) statement that "if today is Saturday, then tomorrow is Sunday" is just as true even if today is actually Friday, or Monday, or Thursday, or.....

Deron's been in the league for only five years. You can't compare his sixth year to Stockton's, or even Keith Mcleod's, cause he aint played it yet.

Ala Sloan and Jordan, I think one could be fairly confident in asserting that Williams is better than Stockton. Of course Stockton is almost 50 years old now, but still.....

Stockton's a Hall of Famer, one of the 50-Greatest Players of all-time and arguably the best pure PG ever. This shouldn't be a debate.

...exactly! In Stockton your talking about a guy who has 2 prominent statistical records that will NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER be broken! Total assists and steals!!! Stockton's winning percentage both in the regular season and playoffs is very high as well! Right now, Deron is not even in the discussion....probably never will be.

1) Stock is my favorite player of all time
2) He is not the best PG of all time - top five but not best
3) Deron has probably done more at this point of his career than Stock had done at the same point
4) Lets talk in 10 years

Who's better? Deron Williams or John Stockton? Yes, I'm being serious. This caused quite the fervor in my office today. Lots of mixed opinions actually. Deron in his prime or John in his prime. Who'd win 1 on 1? Who would u want on your team? Who'd win in a fist fight? Who's cooler? But the bottom line is who's the better player. List your reasons why!

1. Who's better? Stockton
2. Who'd win 1 on 1? Who cares- basketball is a 5 on 5 sport. If you are going one on one you cannot truly measure stock's amazing screen setting or picks.
3. Who'd win in a fist fight? Again - who cares
4. Best player- Stockton hands down. Dwill is looking good but Stock is better at assists, hard nosed play, scrapiness. In addition he played his whole career with one team- the JAZZ!

I like Dwill I think he ranks among the best in the NBA but he has a long way to go - hopefully he chooses to do it in a jazz uniform.

PS Stockton is the all time best PG ever.

Better than Magic Johnson?

I think not, as much as I love Stockton.

BTW, why is Magic not a 'pure point guard?' (This is often the fall back position when challenged on the 'Stockton is the best point guard ever'--'well, he was the best PURE point guard.)

Is there some kind of point guard's guidebook out there that differentiates between pure and non-pure point guards? Magic was by no means a combo guard. True he played center when Jabbar was injured, but aside from being a little taller than the run of the mill PG, Johnson was, nonetheless, a PG, was he not?

....hopper has a point, here! We would all take Deron in a "dunk" contest against Stockton, no matter when, where or at what point in their careers!!!

John was extremely wise, certainly wise enough to realize his own limitations. With regard to dunks, Stockton said: "That's not a high percentage shot for me."

Every year in training camp, Stockton would ask his new teammates where they liked the ball, as in where did they like to catch the ball so they most naturally catch and shoot. I remember hearing Donyell Marshall say he had to stop and think about it, but once he told him, John would pass him the ball in the same position and at the same level every time. That's how brilliant he was.

So Donyell's answer must have been "under the basket with nowhere to go" because that seemed to be where he received many passes.

...Magic Johnson was 6 ft 9! That's not a "pure" point guard! He played the point, but could play all 5 positions if called upon to do so. Say what you want, but Stockton has Magic beat big time in career assists and career steals....2 crucial stats for "pure" point guards!
