New York (CNN) -- A disgruntled former apparel designer was killed Friday morning in a hail of police gunfire in front of the Empire State Building after he shot and killed a co-worker and engaged in a gunbattle with two officers, authorities said.
Police officers fired a total of 16 rounds; one officer shot nine while another one shot seven, the New York Police Department said.

Good thing there were no armed citizens around.

I got a good chuckle from this today.

ohmygosh that movie sucked so bad...

dude, it was a spoof. Paul Verhoeven is a ****ing genius. I promise.

He had a string of movies that put douchebags into the theatre for "kick ***" movies, and he was making fun of them the whole time.

e.g. Starship Troopers, Total Recall, Showgirls, etc.

He's one of my all-time favs.

Are these violent crimes becoming more common? Why?

No crime and violent crime in particular have been declining for decades.

News stories are not an accurate measure of how often something happens.

This. I looked this up some months ago, and I want to VC's peak was in the 70's (Death Wish, Dirty Harry anyone?) on a per capita basis.

How do trained cops accidentally shoot flower pots?

Well, if nothing else it's clear that police do not posses magical firearms abilities, and that it is entirely possible for a private citizen to train and become just as proficient with firearms as any police officer.

I recommend The Better Angels of Our Nature by Steven Pinker for those who are wondering about patterns of violence in society throughout history. The current decline in violence we're experiencing seems to be a profound and long-term pattern in modern culture worldwide.

Did the bad guy have any through and through wounds? That could also account for an innocent person being wounded. But other than that, obviously cops aren't perfect. In the heat of the moment, with a bad guy moving, it's probably pretty easy to miss.

yeah but I think the larger point is the NYC is just to damn crowded and too much of a pressure cooker to have anything but the stringent gun laws that they have.

but what's good for NY isn't necessarily good for Texas or Arizona.

Agreed wholeheartedly.

Yes, the good people of New York trying to defend themselves from the criminals should have to jump through 10x the bureaucratic hoops since they are more likely to be victims.

Brilliant!
