What's new

Bill Clinton is awesome

So you acknowledge he ****ed up with the Glass-Steagall. Now what exactly did he do to bring us to such unparalleled wealth? I'm curious. Because I wonder if it may have just been coincidence and that his presidency just happened to coincide with our crazy boom of internet, telecom, tech, bio-tech, and so on.

****ed up with Glass-Steagull, NAFTA, GATT, land grabbing, ect.
And I definitely agree the internet boom had everything to do with the exceptional economy during his presidency.
Yes, the same internet boom that was invented by Al Gore.

The right loves to make fun of Clinton. In reality, they'd give their right nut to have anyone in the party half as charismatic or as effective (as President) as he was.

Personally, I would have preferred 4 terms of Clinton (and give him all the interns he wanted) than suffer through the 8 long and dreadful years we had with Bush...

I would give Obama/Romney the white house for life if they could bring us to the level of prosperity we had in the 90s......

Good points because the Republican led congress had nothing to do with the prosperity of the 90's...

He could have done something about Rwanda as well but I'm glad Bill is gettin some props around here. He continues to work for respectable causes also.

Are you insinuating that I said he misrepresented cherry picked stats?

The bull **** had nothing to do with him claiming one plus one is two. I realize that gets his worshippers to go crazy, but lacking substance does little for me. Did you tear up when he falsely attributed manufacturing growth to Obama & made it sound like it could only continue under Obama? That's the sycophant bull **** we've come to expect from democratic leaders. & that reminds me, why did Obama lie to you all about dealing with Chinese manipulation? THAT is something that could have helped manufacturers but Obama disappeared on that promise too. Romney won't.

Both parties annoy me when they blame our problems on China, that's BS.
Clinton made some mistakes on derivatives and Glass Steagal, but he did those things in the spirit of being moderate, and compromising with the Republicans and being more free market. Those things were only a part of the problems. You should not blame everything on those decisions. I don't see how Republicans would have done better, or even as well.

Out of curiosity, what makes you believe this?

I didn't watch the speech - I generally don't follow national conventions. They're a waste of time.

You just said the speech was ******** and one of the few political sites that I find to be thorough and non-partisan said it wasn't.

And for what it's worth - spin is spin. The facts are what matter. At least to me anyway.

How effective was Clinton? He's the one who got us into a lot of our mess with his brilliant work with the Glass-Steagall.

Clinton buried Glass-Steagall, but it was already on life support. It's provisions went through a process of being rolled back since the 1950s.

That is true. However, those sections of Glass-Steagall that were specifically repealed in 1999 (then allowing insured banks from being affiliated with investment banks) were no doubt a contributor to the collapse.

Like everything, though, one link in a chain of events becomes a scapegoat. I believe there is causation to be found in Carter's CRA, I believe GWB and his relaxing of lending requirements (and especially for home equity extraction to fuel consumer spending), a huge one, imo, is the exempting derivitives from regulation, credit default swaps, the SEC relaxing underwriting criteria in 2004 .. all-in-all, both parties, every term, has done something to bring about hurried growth, make believe economy, and I believe, along the way, everyone lost track of the score. Burst. Boom.

Bottom line is the 1999 orepeal of critical components of Glass-Steagall is, in part, to blame. But the problems began long before, persisted long after, and at times, even intentionally excellerated.. even if unknowingly.

you were strangely silent in the threads about Paul Ryan's speech and Romney's professional career.

But... keep punching out the same defensive lines.... the same issues. BYU1984WOOOO!!!

Bill Clinton's speech at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night reminded at least one Republican of another time the former president stepped before the microphones.

Former California Gov. Pete Wilson said Thursday at a fundraiser for GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan that Clinton's finger shake was reminiscent of the time he denied engaging in sexual behavior with a White House intern, and he used the moment to jab at the former president.
