The Jazz are paying Raja Bell $3.5 million to sit this one out. The 36-year-old guard has not been with the team since the end of last season and the message out of the Jazz has been one of complete and utter silence when it comes to their estranged veteran.
However, in an interview with team-owned radio station 1280 The Zone, Jazz Senior Vice President Kevin O'Connor was surprisingly candid when it came to Bell's situation, saying that the Jazz want to buy out Bell's contract, but not at the price the veteran sought and that keeping Bell from signing with the rival Lakers could be a factor. [Full disclosure: The interview was conducted by Spencer Checketts and Gordon Monson, a Tribune columnist and drive-time host on The Zone.]

After the Jazz did not trade Bell before Thursday's deadline, reports have resurfaced that the Lakers are interested in adding Bell as they make a push for the playoffs. Hoopsworld's Alex Kennedy reported last week that Bell told "players and friends around the league" that he expects to join the Lakers.
When asked about Bell last week, General Manager Dennis Lindsey offered a customary, "no comment." His predecessor, however, was much more forthcoming in his interview with the team-owned station. Here's the transcript:
O'Connor: I think it's been from the start. We'll be willing to look at a buyout. We're not just going to let him walk away. We're paying him the money. [Checketts: Right] He's going to get money. He can't get all the money from us and then go make more with the Lakers. Oh, thank you. I'd get fired for that. I'd fire me for that.
Checketts: Is it a situation where you would be motivated to keep him under contract so he doesn't play for the Lakers?
O'Connor: Yeah, if we thought that was the best interest of the team. I'd like not to do that. I don't think you want to be in a situation where you're holding somebody hostage in that respect, but let's go back. Raja said, "Hey, I'll take a buyout." We've said it from the start: All we want is a minimum buyout. We never heard from him. He never said yes to it. We would have done it right away.
The full interview can be heard here.

Not exactly surprising. But this confirms that the sticking point has been that Bell wants to make his full salary and get paid by the Lakers.

EDIT: Did the Jazz give permission for Bell and his agent to explore other options? Is it a CBA tampering violation for the Lakers to talk to Bell?

Raja Bell that ****ing mot ****$(&#*$(*& #$*KS*DK KKK loving chicken **#*($)(* b***** with a *$**%*%* ice cream sandwich making mother *#*($%(*%(

One issue I'm behind KOC on, out of so many.

I'm fairly certain the Jazz gave their permission for that. I don't know that I can confirm that though.

This ought to be a fairly standard contract language that "Jazz agree to pay player X in a lump sum for the duration of the contract and waive the provisions of the contract. Any money earned by the player for playing in the NBA in 2013 season shall be returned to the club."

I was under the impression that the Jazz did give him permission. If the Jaazz hold onto him and torpedoe his record then good riddance. BOO RAJA BOO!!!!!!

It appears he was given permission in July.

Clock is ticking for Raja. March 1st is the deadline for him to get a buyout and still be playoff eligible for another team.

They almost certainly did. They wanted Raja to find some guaranteed money from another team, so that they could appropriately price his buyout. Or so it seems to me.

If Utah passed up an offer from the Lakers for Bell, especially one involving either Chris Duhon or Steve Blake, I would be pissed. Utah has a tough March schedule and either would have been a step up from Utah's current PG situation. Yes, they would be adding salary for next season, but a serviceable back-up PG for $3-4m is a commodity.

Except for the fact they are looking BEYOND next season. Having Duhon or Blake means $12M+ in wasted salaries (adding in Marvin's). Next year the Jazz will have Mo (he's a lock to return) + Burks (Jazz are investing time in him at PG) + either a good FA or a draft pick.

Could Raja be anymore brain dead. Sure he's making a few bucks with us this year, but he's killing what little left he has in that body wasting away.
You just blew a chance to revive your career with the Lakers Raja, and maybe cash in a decent 2 year deal somewhere. Now you are looking
at scraps from here on out.

Maybe Rodger isn't stupid. Maybe he doesn't have any other offers. Maybe the rest of the league realizes that his best days weren't that good and they happened 7 years ago. Maybe the rest of the league sees him as the self important, inflated ego dirt bag that he is. Maybe it would have cost the Jazz less to just match Mathews.

Hmm..
Interesting, maybe Rodger is going to be exiled to some one other than the Lakers.

Word is Raja Bell buyout in Utah will continue to be discussed up to Friday's 11:59 PM ET deadline but Lakers NOT most likely destination

Raja Bell certainly fits, given that Kobe/Nash/D'Antoni rank as three of his biggest fans, but Lakes NOT eager to add to $100 mil payroll

So if he waits until 11:59 it doesn't leave the Jazz any time to add another player does it.

Roger wins again.
