Tax Cheat Assistant Coach

Let me guess, this is about the other black guy on the coaching staff (regardless of his exemplary work ethic and media handling). My, my, how'd we ever let Hornacek go? This is tragic..

Hornacek was such a unique player that I was always incredulous of his ability to teach. I was never a big fan of him as a coach - other than the fact that he was white.

One time I said sarcastically that the NC State-Houston game was the last playoff game that Sidney Lowe was in.

You know it's ****ing true? He has never played for or was the HC for a playoff/tournament basketball team since that game. And that's 15 years as a player or Head Coach.

And how does that make you feel?

I bitched the minute Lowe was hired. Not only for his ****ty resume but for what it showed me of Ty making a career-safe hire rather than someone to help push the program upward.

And how does that make you feel?

Wait, I'm confused. Are we talking Ty, or we talking Lowe?

If it was me I would have interviewed Ty but the interview would have lasted about 3 minutes. I would have complimented him on his suit and then said that we are moving in a different direction.

so two and a half minutes of awkward silence? Hard core.

And he didn't pay the taxes when he was an employee of the State as the Coach at North Carolinia State.

How do you know this? Paying taxes and filing a return are two separate things. He may have had his state taxes correctly withheld each year, but didn't file.

Are there any tax experts out there? Why is this going to court? I thought when they caught you they made you pay the taxes and some fines and told you not to do it again. If this is still in court is it possible there is more to this than just not paying taxes? Or because he is a public figure (and a state employee) are they going to make an example of him and put him in Jail?

Why is it going to court? Because anytime someone is charged with a crime it goes to court. Even if the state decides to drop the case it still goes to court. The first time you go is your initial appearance. It is when you plead guilty, not guilty, no contest. Then the next step depends on how you plead. Lowe hasn't even done that yet. You can't read anything into it just because it is still ongoing.

It got delayed so he could finish coaching the season. So they will go to court tomorrow and check-in so to speak and get a new date for the next step. Pretty standard.

Not an expert, but you aren't taken to court for not filing.. they tell u to file.
This isn't the IRS/Federal Gov. This is the state of North Carolina which uses different procedures. Anytime someone is charged with a crime it must go through the court system. I would guess it's pretty standard that when the state decides you haven't paid taxes in NC they take it to court and file Misdemeanor charges if the defendant doesn't pay them prior to that time.

You don't go to court because you can't pay... they work with you.
Maybe the IRS does, but does North Carolina?

You go to court for blatant evasion/fraud.
Not saying that's what it is.. but its what it looks like.

It very well could be, but at the same time, fraud is usually when people actually file a return and lie. It's hard to see how not filing a return would be construed as fraud. I would guess this is standard procedure in NC.

I am willing to bet the attorney goes to court, gets a new date, Lowe pleads Not Guilty and then they work out a plea deal where he pays a fine and either pleads no contest or guilty. Maybe they are working on that agreement now which is why they haven't plead yet.

Calling him a tax cheat and criticizing his integrity is a bit premature without knowing all the facts and his side of the story. Also, it doesn't seem like the IRS is going after him for federal tax evasion. It seems many of you are assuming he didn't pay taxes during that time. How many of you owe taxes at the end of the year in April? I would guess most of you get a refund. So if you suddenly didn't file your return in March/April, it doesn't mean that you didn't pay your taxes the rest of the year. It just means you're an idiot or you hired an incompetent accountant. However, if it comes out he claimed to be exempt on his W4 or something then yeah, he wouldn't have paid any during the year.

I'm going to wait until more facts are out before blasting his integrity or reading too much into it though.

Edit - Also, considering college coaches have a base salary plus other benefits and bonuses which tend to make up the bulk of their compensation, I would guess he could owe quite a bit. I would imagine taxes were withheld on his salary and some benefits/bonuses, but there might be some that were paid to him without having taxes withheld. That may be what the state is interested in going after since it already knows exactly what bonuses he received and how much they are owed.

Premature criticism on a message board- surely you jest.

Seriously I don't see him as a good enough coach to bother with these headaches.

I agree, McGibblets. All these people are being plain rude. Maybe franklin was right after all.

LOL.. this also summed up my sentiment. Rep'd.

You hire mediocrity (Ty) - he hires mediocrity (Lowe) - given time, the team becomes MEDIOCRE.

@frank.. based on his resume, he would not have even gotten an interview with me.

Society has a way of wasting useful excellence based on a lack of credentials. Sometimes people need to be put into a scenario where achievement is possible. Who am I to say the Jazz lacked personal insight into Sidney Lowe that wasn't available to the rest of us? The world is more than Ivy League Pedigree.

Lol, I don't mean to imply he's not an idiot, a bad coach, nor a bad fit for the Jazz. Merely that you can't read too much into this whole tax issue because there aren't any facts publicly available yet and the case is proceeding in a pretty standard way.

A lack of credentials doesn't concern me... that's probably what I am most use to hiring. But a complete trail of ineptness left from opportunity is a completely different story. I don't care if no one else has ever given you a chance. I will. But I want to see a do it or die in the attempt mentality with the opportunities that have been given.

Nothing about his track record speaks to 'useful excellence' .. or even useful, for that matter.

I knew what you meant.. I'm poking fun at others.

The question I have is why there's never been any dialogue around that instead of typical hate tirades aimed at his bow tie. And what other fanbase obsesses this much over an assistant? The hate from the masses is boggling

Gotta love good ole hate the black guy for wearing a bow tie. Want to stay ignorant to the unfounded hate this guy has received from day 1, despite giving exemplary half time answers?

You don't have a single reason to hate Lowe, but you've railed on him regardless.

I never know if you're serious or not, so I'll just ignore the bald-faced insinuation that I'm a member of The Klan.

Funny you bring up the halftime interviews, because the **** he says half the time is total drivel.

We can finally agree on that.
