I’m not freaking out. There is so much to be hopeful for on this Jazz team. But in spreading joy, happiness, and optimism I can’t ignore a few issues:
- 3pt shooting. Jazz ranked 28th in 3pt attempts last season. They attempted 1385 which was nearly 300 fewer attempts than league average and nearly 1000 attempts behind the top two teams (NYK & Hou). With the NBA trending to more and more 3’s the Jazz old school style of pound it inside and shooting long jumpers makes it hard for them to compete. The Jazz lost 2 of their 3 top 3pt shooters in Foye and Mo. Hayward stays with his incredible .415% shooting and Rush was added as a career .413% 3pt shooter. Maybe Burke fills in with some long balls, but until the jazz make some changes to increase the number of 3’s and include more corner threes they will continue to struggle.
- Injuries: Brandon Rush is coming back from his 2nd acl surgery. Young Enes had a freak shoulder surgery that will cost him a summer worth of development. Favors had that plantar facsiatis that never really heals, it just doesn’t flare up. Gobert has a toe that looks like it was Hacked by a weed eater. A team that is expected to have no more than 30 wins, would be devastated if one or more of their bigs goes down or if the guy who is supposed to be a veteran scorer can’t play.
- Coaching. I love the look of the new coaching staff. In particular Brad Jones, Alex Jensen and Johnny Bryant. Jones and Jensen were D-League superstar coaches. They have experience working with and coaching young players this is going to help. The additions of Karl & Jerry were fabulous for fan morale and for the young players. The concern is no longer development, it is in-game strategy and game management--two areas where Corbin has struggled in his 2.333 seasons as head coach. Hopefully his lead assistant and he can get on the same page and improve their game….but if they can’t it could be a really long season for Jazz fans.
- PG. Trey Burke was the Draft day Trophy of the Jazz. And his resume is impeccable. But his summer league performance was never awe inspiring and a little bit frightening. He is the only pg on the roster for now, something the Jazz will certainly address. But Coming in with such fanfare, and high hopes he is going to get time to play and even the best rookie pgs that enter the NBA have led their teams to ugh records: Lilliard 33 wins, Kyrie and the cavs 21, Kemba in Charlotte-7, Knight in Detroit 25. Wall in Washington 23, 2010-Flynn 17 wins, Curry (Used as sg) in GS 36 wins. Expect a difficult season for the likeable Trey.
