Tell Us Who Got Banned Thread Closed?

To the extent I made an error it was as follows:

To the best of my recollection it is true that after I sent out the warning honz stopped posting on the subject. Archie did not. To that extent there is a good argument that I should have temporarily ban-hammered Archie and let honz be. I can see that argument and I respect it. If that is the basis of honz' complaint, then that is valid.

My defense is as follows: Things were moving very quickly (I think I merged 3-5 items from various sources in about 5 minutes while editing my moderator thread log of what was happening and viewing various private messages that Archie and honz were sending me) and Archie was sending me PMs indicating that he and honz were engaging in a coordinated effort. To that extent at the time I viewed it as they were essentially operating in a unified fashion and I treated them identically.

If I could do it over again I would have still temporarily banned Archie, but I would have reached out a final time to honz (after already sending him 3-4 PMs during this incident) to make sure he had no further plans to try to get around the thread lock before temporarily banning him as well.
But why was it necessary to merge and lock the thread where we were "reconciling" and clearing up the confusion. That was the first thing that I thought was unreasonable. As I said last night in a PM I totally understood your request to stop the hostility and foul language even though it was all an act.

I'm not really certain why you think I'm back-pedalling Archie. I'm saying I would have largely handled it the same way with the benefit of hindsight. I certainly would have treated you identically. I'm saying I might have treated honz somewhat differently and probably would have given him a little more time. Turns out there's a benefit to hindsight and my positions are not completely immovable.

Jason is correct in his analogy. I put you two in time-out. That's because you seemed extremely intent on getting into the jazzfanz equivalent of a wikipedia edit-war with me. I'm just not going to sit in front of my computer for an hour doing nothing but merging your posts. The easiest way to stop the cycle is just to turn off your ability to post until you calm down, so that's what I did. You were taken off posting privileges for barely half a day. That is barely a slap on the wrist. You're acting like I shot your dog.
We aren't complaining about the ban or the infraction...just the way you handled it. And we feel there was no need to merge our posts is what I have been saying this whole time. We were honestly trying to clear up the confusion albeit in a joking and sarcastic manner. We were still just trying to entertain ourselves cause we were bored but we weren't trying to disrespect the mods or "make Jazzfanz our personal playground".

Threads that get started specifically to continue a discussion in a locked thread should ALWAYS be locked/merged/deleted. That's been standard practice for virtually the entire time I've been a moderator (which is running up on 6-7 years now, so this isn't a small sample size). Otherwise the lock power has no real purpose because people will just continue the conversation even after we've locked it down. To be clear, you and Archie are not the first people that have tried to continue a locked thread and you won't be the last. That's what we (or at least I) always do in that situation. You may have thought you were being singled out, but you were actually being treated like everybody else. Not merging/locking would have been the special treatment.

Like I said earlier, I recognize that you probably got hit a little harder than you normally would have because you and Archie were working together and he pushed it farther than you did. There was probably room for differentiated treatment and instead you got universal treatment. I understand that perspective. I hope you understand mine.

Honz & Archie - you guys have great reputation here on JazzFanz, to the point where you're looked up by most, if not all of the posters here.

Moreover, I really do think that most posters have sided with you on this issue, that the ban was unnecessary and a bit over the top.

May be I'm too naive, but I don't think you have to keep defending your position on this.

I understand that but I guess I don't feel like it was a continuation of the thread and/or types of posts that got locked. Some people were legitimately confused as to whether our "fight" was real or not and we were making it abundantly clear that it was all a hoax, but then you immediately merged and locked those threads and before I knew it I couldn't even sign on to Jazzfanz...

That's a judgment call. I made it one way. You might have made it another.

At some point it's clear that the call has been made. Your recourse is to run it up the chain to Jason or colton, not to make more threads and/or posts in unrelated threads.

Hard to do when I am already banned and can't access the site.

A) That was your recourse before you started making more threads.

B) The e-mail address is always available to you regardless of your ban status. How do you think perma-banned posters contact Jason to get back in?

I have told you publicly that if I were to do it again I would have not put you on time-out at the same time I put Archie on time-out. With a little hindsight I can see that was a mistake. That's probably as close as you'll ever get to an apology on a message board so you should just take it and move on.

I will get caught up on my Jazzfanz handbook. I am not an expert on how to contact mods and or admins when banned seeing as I hadn't received an infraction in several years let alone a ban...temporary or permanent. I will move on now though since you guys have at least acknowledged my side of the story and I received an "almost apology" from you.

I still think it's funny that kicky was one of like two or three people that thought our fake fight was real, to the point where he PM'd multiple about it and checked up on honz's well being.

I'll admit I thought there was a chance that it had some truth value to it. I had assumed it was completely a joke for several days. PKM sold your joke for you. I hope you've at least thanked him for doing the heavy lifting.

I'll also admit that I'm the douchebag that actually cared if someone was being evicted and his jerk of a landlord was making fun of his poor life situation publicly. That's an ******* that I'll take credit for being every day of the week.

Lol. The more you post, the better it gets.

First, I like how you're in honz's corner now with your "almost" apology and you make it seem like what I did was so much worse than what he did because I made one more post (I'm gonna get to that) than him as if he wasn't sitting right next to me posting in the same thread and after he submitted his post he's the one that found out we got banned.

Second, the post that according to you was annoying and pushed the turd over the hill was my post in the, Who are you thread, and it was essentially thanking/making fun of how PKM sold the joke to get our thread locked.

Silly rabbit, you may have da brains, and the lights may be on, but no ones home.

Boom, son. BOOM!

OK, that's enough of that. Don't make me close the "Tell Us Who Got Banned Thread Closed?" thread. Then we'd need to start a "Tell Us Who Got Banned Thread Closed? Closed?" thread.

It's clear that you were trolling the board, and as such deserved an infraction. It's also clear that you and honz disagree with how kicky handled the situation. Even if you are right, the minimal hours suspension you received was, as kicky said, at worst a slap on the wrist.

And if you keep this up and you'll get another infraction, this time for back seat moderating.

Actually you made two more on the subject. Honz is correct that I jumped the gun in my belief that you would both continue posting on the subject if I didn't take away posting privileges temporarily. I didn't jump the gun for you. You'd already done it.

Let's be clear Archie: I sent you a warning via PM. You kept doing things I asked you not to do. You all but dared me to. You couldn't possibly have been surprised.

Honz had a real shot at being surprised because he hadn't made a post after that point, which is why I acknowledged he had a legitimate complaint. However, like a good friend you then posted this:

as if he wasn't sitting right next to me posting in the same thread and after he submitted his post he's the one that found out we got banned.

In other words, while I may have jumped the gun, my assumption that he was engaging in the same behavior as you was actually correct, I just didn't give him enough time. I only wish, then, that I had given him enough time so that he didn't have an argument at all.

Would just like to take the time to thank sirkicky for saving this board from such scoundrels as Archibald and honzward.
