2013-14 BYU Basketball #CougNation

I don't necessarily think they move up even if they beat Texas, unless they beat them handily.
A lot will depend on what other teams above them do. I see the loss dropping them a bit, but not much.

Texas is not at home, but a neutral court.. not sure if that means ESA or what.

Pretty sure Texas sucks pretty bad. Rick Barnes is on his last legs. BYU should beat them easily.

It's @ Adam-ondi-Ahman. It's a little tourney. BYU/Texas and Wichita State/Depaul Monday night, and then winners/winners and losers/losers play the next night.

Yup, protective glasses and all:

Great win last night against a good team. Haws continues to carry us when we need it. The glasses seemed like they bothered Mika. Big one tonight against Wichita State. They are really good.

Mika still played well even with the glasses. The refs did limit him again though. He did have a little adjustment but I don't think it was to his glasses, I think it was more that 6'9" guy that was at least 300 lbs, long, and pretty dang athletic for that size that bothered him a bit. He's probably never played against somebody built like that in his life. That guy was a load. For instance, remember that play where Mika faced him up, blew by him, and then was going up for the reverse jam and Fat Albert ends up being able to recover? Both he and that 6'10", 250 Prince guy that was super athletic that backed him up were top 50 recruits. Texas will probably end up an average basketball team, but those two Texas dudes are about as tough physically as you're going to face in college basketball. Not the most skilled guys, just physically beasts though.

But yeah, it was nice to see White Rip take over down the stretch. He's unguardable when he sticks to coming off screens, the mid range pullups, the spot of 3's. One of the best shooters I've ever seen with guys in his face. Hopefully he just comes out firing tonight.

BYU really needs to foul hard every once in awhile though. Establish some level of physicality under the rim beyond Mika because he has to be ultra careful with the way refs are calling things. They are a bit soft. Kaufusi will do that once he's done playing football, but in the meantime Worthington or somebody needs to come in the games and just clobber some people. Texas probably had 10 dunks at least. That's not acceptable.

Was pulling for the Cougars, but they just did not make many good plays late. Carlino makes me scratch my head constantly

He's into universal frustration; has everybody looking like crack fiends. I think his "Matty Basketball" title is well deserved. Kid looks like a NBA player 75% of the time, but then he thinks his Superman for a stretch and is wild.

The tough thing about Witchia State loss is that I think they are probably overrated. They deserve their ranking for what they did in the tourney and for winning early this year, and are a very smart and patient team, but BYU had open shots all day long. Just couldn't hit anything. And BYU has a bad habit. You can't jump on teams early and then start playing like complete ****. It's totally deflating. I believe they were ahead double digits in that Iowa State game. Texas as well and had to come back to win that one. And they were up on Witchia State by 13 and lost it pretty quickly.

I disagree with Wichita State being overrated. They missed a lot of open shots as well. Their new point guard really impressed me and they have everyone else back from last year's team. I think they defend really well. It's still so early but I'd think they will be playing deep into March and perhaps early April once again.

The key for us will be getting Haws back healthy, Mika a little more comfortable with knowing how to defend without fouling and getting Collinsworth to be more consistent. Carlino is gonna Carlino so we'll see where that takes us.

Mika's 4th foul was a total rubbish make up call because they called a charge wrongly on W-state right before that. I hate officials that do that. You made a bad call, own it. Don't just blow your whistle on the next sign of non-foul contact. At least wait until the guy that got the charge call in his favor does something and give it to him.

Yeah it's tough to say where Wichita St. really is in the realm of college basketball, but they play good defense so they'll be a tough out for any team, no matter how good. I think most of their run last year was due to how wide open their section of the bracket was last year. Iowa St. was in the same region and it was very weak. The Zags were the 1 seed (didn't last long), Ohio St. was the two (needed the refs to beat the Cyclones), Arizona was the three, and so on. Iowa St. was about equal to any of the teams in it and they were a 10 seed.

I never though Monta Ellis and Carmelo Anthony would look like unselfish team players until I saw Haws and Carlino.

Unbelievable chuckingness.

Does Rose even coach anymore? Or does he just roll the ball out and let 2 of his 12 players chuck away? I'd be angry if I were Collinsworth or Austin. They deserve the rock a lot more. 2 games now the chucking has cost the Cougs. Had they kept that ball moving I guarantee you they would have beaten Iowa St and Witchita.

I was also unimpressed with their shot selection, particularly down the stretch.

Word. I only watched about the last 3 minutes. Just enough time to see Carlino jack up some really dumb shots. Haws tried to force things a couple times as well. They were probably pretty frustrated by that point, however, because Wichita State's defense is pretty salty.
