I'm fairly certain that Burke will be leading the team in shots taken. He's also going to not have that great of percentage (I'm thinking around 35% for both 2's and 3's). Rookie point guards don't usually score effectively to well, Chris Paul was just barely above 40% in his rookie year. Now what do you guys think of this? I don't really care, I'd like him to get his confidence and learn to make a little better shot selection. It probably won't help us win to much though (Good thing?). If he's going to lead this team he's going to have to take shots and make plays.
 
Ummmm. I've been saying this since summer league. He is a shooter. He dominates the ball. It's ok. Besides, we don't have anyone else that can shoot.

So our best shooter goes 5-17? Oh good hell we really do suck.

I'd like to see less shots by Burke and have him getting more assists to our great big men, making the right passes. I think right now he is still in the mindset of how he played in Michigan where he was the leader, taking most of the shots.

I've already seen a few passes coming off the P&R and that behind the shoulder flip to Favors last night makes me think this kid sees the court differently than most players. Realistically I think he's more of a 7-8 APG guy instead of 10-12 APG; but I like what I've seen so far.
 
once he understands the NBA game a little better he will even out. by the end of the season i expect about 14-15 fga (40% would put him at 5.5-6 makes per game), and 5-6 apg.

I think i'd be happy with that ~ 12ppg and 6apg.

That would be pretty solid.
 
This team will be better off if he learns to make others around him better. Good hell he's a 6ft pg that isn't that explosive, and he's a shoot first guy, which is why I was upset when we traded for him. The only way he becomes a good to great starting pg is if he passes the ball, and only shoots when he has to or is wide open.

The only way he is worth the 9th damn pick is if he learns to dish out 10 assists a game. He needs to take to heart what he learned from Stockton, be a playmaker, and cold blooded assassin when the team needs it.

Hey first time poster here. FYI I'm not a Jazz fan. I was born and raised in New Orleans and I'm a big time Pelicans(still hate the name) fan. However I am a big Trey Burke fan. Was terribly disappointed when we passed on him in the draft. So I'll be following the Jazz really close over the course of his career.

To answer the question I'd say it's a bad thing. I think he can be a special player in this league, but it will be in the role of a true PG. He needs to be more Chris Paul than Derrick Rose. While I think his scoring efficiency will increase (which is key more than attempts) as he gets more comfortable with(and eventually removal) of the finger wrap. Burke is a high IQ guy and will realize A) that guys are more capable of finishing at this level and B) when his shot/pass ratio is about 50/50 it will make it easier to score.

The other thing is Corbin should run the offense through Trey much more often than the last three games. His 1st game against us he did outstanding controlling the offense. Playing him off ball take away from his biggest strength and that's his decision making.
 
What bothers me about shot selection for Burkes and Gordon is that they force shots when they don't need to. There is no reason to do a top of the key cork screw jumper when there is 10 seconds left on the clock.

Last night, in over time, Trey hits a three. Next position on the right baseline, he tries to force a shot from 20 feet with a double pump under the arm of the defender force shot that didn't even come close. Those are the shots he has got to stop taking.

I disagree, the most valuable thing he could provide is above average pg defense, and penetration. The number one thing that has killed us over the past few years has been pg penetration. This league doesn't need 10+ assist pg's anymore to be successful. What a team needs is penetration defense and multiple threats.

If he can play big-time pg defense and provide one more threat on the floor to spread the lane out, those are critical. he doesnt need to suddenly become john stockton. If he can get into the lane and stop getting himself stuck there, he will be exactly what we need. If he can develop a rep of getting to the cup -AND- hitting the 3, the assists will come far easier (dish when the d collapses on his penetration) -AND- the ft attempts will go up with that rep.

I want him to get a feel for penetrating. If i were corbs i would pressure him to attack the rim often, and work on that aspect of his game, because much of his game will likely hinge on it.
 
Did you guys actually watch the game last night?
Quite a few of those bad shots were late in the shot clock and last options in the play.
I'm glad that he has the guts to at least do something with the ball in clutch unlike all of our players who were just passing it to the next guy hoping that they weren't the ones to screw up the game.

There are a grand total of 2 players in NBA history who have averaged 10+ assists per game over a career, and 26 who have averaged 10+ assists in a season. How many all-stars do you think come out of every draft? 9+? What about in a weak draft? In an average draft, you should be hoping to land a solid starter at #9, not an all time great.

Burke has shown a few positives so far. He's getting to his spots out of the pick and roll with ease (even if he's still learning what to do against NBA players and defenses once they've been leveraged), and his defense has been much better than advertised. He competes. Probably wise to give him a little time to adjust to the speed of the game and size of the players in the NBA.
 
I love Burke's play so far. He is the only guy on the team willing to punch back. Imagine what he would have done with a finger in his ear.

By the end of the year, Hayward will wish he had signed the extension, we will all think Favors is the next Malone (not because he is that good, but because he will be playing at borderline All-Star level and we come tell over rate out players, and it will all be because of Burke.

Yes. I may have over stated things, but you get my point, right? He's a small pg, and not exactly Alen Iverson. We don't need him taking the most shots on the team. We need someone that will get Favors more looks at the rim.
 
I'd rather he shoot less be efficient, while making Favors and Kanter better. In Stocktons best years he put up 17/14 #. Why can't Burke strive for 17/7-9, this is unrealistic and unfair to expect from Burke, but I'd settle for 10-12/7-9?
